If the passport control asks when your leaving just say you expect to love Dubai so much that you'll be tourist for a while ;) Don't say anything about searching for a job etc.

Any new experiences with this? My husband is flying to Dubai a week before me and the kids to start his new job and iqama process and look for a flat. The kids and I are planning to fly to join him on US passports (as visitors) and then convert our visitor status to permanent residence when it's possible, because we need to get there asap to register in schools. Can we enter with one-way tickets or do we need proof of a flight out? When I flew in on a single ticket, I just told them that I was coming to join my husband who was working here. No problems at all.

I've been flying in and out of the country a few times during the past year as a visitor, and no-one has asked to see my return tickets. Occasionally they ask me how long I plan to stay at the passport control, but to me it always has seemed more like a courtesy small-talk than actual check-up ;)

I came out on a return because the return was marginally cheaper than a single!! It means I now always buy my tickets in UK which is way cheaper than buying in Dubai. It does mean you have to specify a return date in advance but most tickets will allow you to change dates for a small fee, I always check I can do this before purchasing. I used to do this, and yes it was alot cheaper. May start to do this again.

Dubai have never asked me to see a return ticket, but my friend was asked once. Whereas leaving the UK maybe a different story, as I get asked each and everytime if I have a return..... I do believe in time a return ticket will be needed, but as yet, no you dont.

I booked one way ticket also from France tho... and book another ticket (cheap one on fly dubai) to the closest country (Oman) within 1 month just in case. They did not even ask at Dubai airport... if I knew it before I would never buy the other ticket... so dont worry; it is possible...

When I first came out here I booked a one way ticket from Europe on a UK passport. I was asked where I was staying and the purpose of my visit. I explained that I was staying with friends, that I would be having interviews for work and dependant on those I would book a return flight. The whole exchange was very pleasant and didn't take long.

When I came out here I booked a return flight, but with the return 7 months after my arrival. I had no residence visa and Dubai passport control never asked me any questions about it. Nic_R - From what I understand they log all your contact details against your passport number as on my first trip to Dubai I was asked where I was staying and for a contact number. On subsequent visits when they scanned my passport they just asked if my contact details were still the same......they must have presumed that you were staying at the same hotel maybe?

When DH first came out here to start his job, it was on a one-way ticket. His employer provided him with proof of employment, which the Emirates check-in desk at Heathrow specifically asked to see when they saw that he was on a one-way ticket with no residence visa in his passport.

I didn't book a one way ticket but I did book a ticket with a return over 5 months ahead which may be viewed in the same way seeing as I would be overstaying a visit visa with that. Hi ladies, I really hope this is still okay since I'm planning to stay two months during summer - arriving in the beginning of July and leaving again by the end of August on a return ticket. I've been to Dubai twice since Christmas (fell in love with the place) and on my first trip, the guy in the airport asked for the name of my hotel. Nobody asked in the airport during my second visit, but I'm just a little nervous about booking a fixed date return ticket knowing my visit visa has expired by then (planning a visa run to Qatar by the end of July). I'm totally new around here but have been learning a lot about Dubai from this forum, much appreciated! Hope to find a job in Dubai as soon as I finish my education in Denmark:-)

We arrived on a one way ticket ( to start new job) with obviously no residency visa. (Oz passports) They did ask a question and we said we were coming here to start a job....they accepted this and we didn't show any relevant paperwork. Also my daughter arrived on a one way ticket ( she was planning to visit for 2 months) and I hadn't bought the return ticket. They asked her why she was on a one way ticket and she said she was coming to study and would be applying for a student visa ( again no supporting paperwork) and no problem. both times was through Abu Dhabi ( not Dubai) don't know if it is different in Dubai? edited by AvalonMum on 31/01/2011

I am a UK passport holder and purchased a one way ticket from outside of Britain to initially fly to Dubai, prior to receiving my residency visa. Everything went smoothly. No problems at passport control. Thanks for the info Mabel - but did your/Dh's employer process a residency visa? We will be coming completely as a "tourist" no potential employer to sponsor DH as yet .... Is this possible?

Are you coming from the UK? Just asking because it is cheaper to buy tickets with the origin as the UK rather than as Dubai - strange but true. So when I came out here I booked a return ticket with my return a few months after, I could then have changed it if I wanted to. So that now means that I can book my tickets as a Manchester-Abu Dhabi-Manchester return rather than the other way round, works out cheaper. Just a suggestion in case you might consider booking a return, you will probably find that a return only costs marginally more than a 1 way anyway. In answer to your actual question - I didn't book a one way ticket but I did book a ticket with a return over 5 months ahead which may be viewed in the same way seeing as I would be overstaying a visit visa with that.

Has anyone bought a one-way ticket to Dubai - when you don't have a residence visa, but holds an EU/UK passport (no visa required)... I know my question may seem 'silly' but wonders if this is possible.... Thanks
