Hi. We are keen to own a Yorkshire Terrier. I have replied to a couple of adds in the classified section but they turned out to be scams (send them money and then they will send details). Does anyone know of any breeders here in Dubai? Thanks

I live in the villa and on the community forum a lady had tea cup yorkshire terriers as her dog had pups. Have search on here for the website address? She may have some pups left. Good Lord. Teacup??? If I even get started on how I feel about the vile practice of breeding 'teacup' breeds, I'll be here for hours. Please google "teacup dogs". If you love animals, good luck not throwing up at what you learn... (Aside from all of that, for the bazillionth time, it's ILLEGAL to breed and sell animals in the UAE unless you are a registered pet store. Anyone buying from these ILLEGAL pet owners risks trouble for themselves and funds this ILLEGAL and unethical breeding) ...not all aimed directly at you fairycakeyumm, but I just can't let these posts slide in case someone reads them and thinks seeking that woman out is a good idea. It's NOT.

That is really sad. is that not illegal here? Can they not be shut down or something done about it? I know where I'm from they would be shut down in a heart beat for having a shady opperation like that. Surly their are animal rights activists here that can do something??? When I went to the pet shops they all (went to 2) seemd nice, clean, organized and all the pups were great and came out and my son played with them. Even the cats seemed very nice and playful and healthy. I asked about their turn over and they said the pets only stay there about a week to 10 days. And if you believe that...........................well, what else did you expect the underpaid and untrained staff to tell you? I saw adult cats and dogs (not to mention birds and reptiles) in petshops all over Dubai which had obviously been there since infancy. And with all the disturbed behaviours you would expect. To tell the truth, some of the conditions were worse than in the dreaded Sharjah animal souk, but even in the "better" stores there were adolescent and adult animals pacing dementedly in tiny unsuitable pens. Animals are just a retail commodity in the Gulf, please, please, please do not buy into a vile trade which causes huge amounts of suffering. K9 and Feline Friends, Bin Kittie Collective et al are the ONLY ethical way to go. If people are determined on a status symbol they can buy a handbag, not a dog. Oh and yes, there have been many animal rights groups who have tried to change things but please consider where you are.

PLEASE do not support any of these pet shops. They are supplied by backyard breeders (or worse) and the animals will have questionable breeding and all of the future vet bills that come with that. Any place that can "order any breed"...disgraceful. I couldn't agree more with Green-ish! Buying dogs from pet shops should never be an option for people who care about animals. If you are absolutely set on a specific breed consider going through a worthy hassle of purchasing your dog from a reputable small size breeder abroad (Europe in particular) . Breeders who show their dogs sometimes have "pet quality" puppies which they sell, not for the sake of making a buck but because they cannot show them. Despite travel or shipping costs this is often even cheaper than buying a puppy here. And if that all seems too complicated, just look at most pet-shop dogs when they grow into adults: rarely do they even come close to resembling their breed standard (no offense!).

CP, if you're on facebook have a search for Animal Action Abu Dhabi, they have several small dogs suitable for apartments looking for homes right now. And I back up Green-ish 100% many of the pet shops who appear legit, fudge the paperwork of the animals, many of them are sick. Put it this way, if a company is willing to ship/fly a baby animal half way across the world for $$$ how ethical do you think they are likely to be and care about the welfare of that animal? edited by Chocs01 on 25/08/2012

We have been looking for a small dog here for months now, despite trawling K9 and Animal League websites here and sending numerous emails, ALL the dogs I see are too big for a small apartment! We are experienced dog owners but have to be selective on size, and we are just being realistic. We did look in the pet shop on Beach Road a few weeks ago and although I was impressed by how clean all the dogs are, and their kennels, they did seem very lethargic - mind you when it's 40c+ outside so are we! If anyone knows of a small dog needing a home (we can't take anything bigger than 8-10kg) please let me know! Thanks.

I am not supporting them, I know nothing about them. (other than what they told me) The OP was asking for a certain type of dog,Ii happened to see two of them at the pet store we went to, so I was just letting her know... I don't know anything about breeding etc... so when they say they can order certain breeds I assume it is legit. However EVERY animal I have ever owned has been a shelter one, but that doesn't mean these pure breeds, or ones at pet shops don't need homes as well. If this pet shop is a bad one maybe someone should report them to someone who can do something. Sorry Shannon. Please don't take my comments personally. There are a few of us here who know how vile the pet shops are in Dubai (ALL of them) and we take every opportunity to let people know. In theory, buying one of those pups and giving it a home *seems* the right thing to do, but while that one animal might live a long and happy life, the HUGE amount of money the pet shops want for pups goes straight back to funding puppy mills. I also say "might" live a long and happy life because so many of the animals sold in Dubai are appallingly bred and may be destined for a life of ill health, pain and huge vet bills. It breaks my heart to walk away from an animal for sale in a shop, but I will not fund animal breeding. Your shelter pets are the lucky ones. :)

There were 2 a few weeks back at the pet shop on sheikh zayed... they also said they can order any breed... they said their breeders are in romania and hungary if i remember right. PLEASE do not support any of these pet shops. They are supplied by backyard breeders (or worse) and the animals will have questionable breeding and all of the future vet bills that come with that. Any place that can "order any breed"...disgraceful. I always say shelter dogs should be any true animal lovers first choice. There's a nice email going around at the moment..."Adopt a shelter dog and save two lives. The one you take home and the one that gets to fill its place." If people insist on a certain breed, PLEASE do your research and source an ethical breeder from (in this case) probably the UK. An ethical breeder will make you jump through hoops before even considering letting you on the wait list for a pup. Any breeder or store who will sell a pup to the first person with the cash is not ethical and supporting their business helps to fund dodgy breeding.

There are NO breeders in the UAE. Those claiming to be are unlicensed and are doing it illegally. If you absolutely must own a pedigree dog, then search out a licensed, reputable dealer abroad. However, there are so many poor homeless dogs in desperate need of good homes in all the shelters at the moment, why don't you have a look there and see if they have any. K9, Animal Action, SCAD, DARC.
