hope this article is true....
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/30/world/asia/dog-meat-festival-is-canceled-in-china.html?_r=0
Its dated September 29, 2011 and is about a different festival to the current one about to take place in Yulin this Sunday.
Sadly this shows clearly nothing really has changed since 2011.
Wow, some people are so beyond short sighted - made up?
Just go onto twitter or Facebook and use the hashtag #StopYuLin2015 - then see the thousands of threads that come up.
Open your eyes to the world we ACTUALLY live in. Don't sit with blinkers on.
The article is out of the mirror .... I would question the validity seriously
Seriously???? Its all over the news globally!
Sadly not untrue, it just happened the first news link I found was from the Mirror but if you think they falsified the whole story here are other mainstream media reports if you prefer to take your news elsewhere.

I wish they were all making this story up.
And here's the official campaign plea if you care enough to raise your voice against the actual slaughter rather than just the reports of it.

I am so angry that they do this, I have two dogs and I love dogs so much. All they want to do is love you and cuddle you, how cant anyone look in those dogs and cats eye and do it. I am not even looking at the article, its too upsetting
Why? Why is eating a dog or a cat worse than eating a cow or a chicken or a *** for that matter?
DOGS AND CATS ARE DOMESTIC ANIMALS.....DOG IS MAN'S BEST FRIEND...DON'T COME ON HERE AND TRY START SOMETHING. I cant stand people that just say something to upset people, this post if for people that care and feel the same way and who are against it.
The article is out of the mirror .... I would question the validity seriously
Change.org have a petition running at the moment. A google search
will confirm it , as much as one battles to comprehend such cruelty
it is happening. I think back in 2011 PETA was able to convince them to
cancel it but it seems to be up and running again.
First of all, every animal you eat could be considered tortured - have you seen how our animals are treated before they are killed? They're not frolicking in the meadows, that's for sure.
And second, food is food, right? And while it might not be to your taste, I think it's wrong to criticize someone else's culinary habits. Particularly since I live in a culture that bans eating ***, while I happen to love a bit of bacon in the morning. People living in glass houses and all ... the festival probably serves an important purpose in reducing the number of stray dogs and cats in the community while feeding people who might not get enough to eat normally.
How many of these " people living in glass houses " are actually
VEGETARIAN........
If you had taken the trouble to read this article it would have been
apparent that many if not most of these animals are STOLEN PETS
they are more trusting and easier to catch.
Everyone has a right to their own opinion however because you feel
there is nothing wrong with this " Festival " doesn't make it acceptable.
I am not a Vegeterian but I only eat meat/chicken and eggs from ethical
sources. I know exactly where the meat comes from ,how it is slaughtered.
I have had first hand experience of what goes on in these countries with
regard to animal welfare and cruelty, it is beyond comprehension.
The whole art of torture to give a better taste is just heartbreaking and
makes you want to apply that same torture......
Your cold hearted response that it may help reduce in population says
it all. If that is one if the aims of this " festival " the HUMANE way to do that
is trap the strays and euthanize, not beat, them skin them ( many still alive )
& cook them.
I apologies to those who feel this is too much info BUT if you are going to
make an argument in favour of such a deplorable act calling itself a festival
do your homework.
A relative of mine is a Government vet in the UK and every day she works ensures the welfare of animals being at an abbatoir. She cis one of the most vocal vets I know ensuring the animals welfare. I left within 12 hours of China as well as the Phillipines, because of their treatment of animals due to the slaughter. Here, it is nothing more than barbaric.
sheikhandbake, PLEASE go and read the articles, look at the pictures and see the videos before you comment!
We do not deliberately boil other animals alive, skin them alive, take their fur off with a blow torch while they are ALIVE!!!!
Many of these animals are pets, that have been stolen.
The Chinese Government denies (unbelievably) that this festival even exists. Sad thing is most Chinese are also opposed to this 'festival' and many actively fight to rescue the animals.
10,000 will be brutally tortured to death on Sunday.
Also sad thing is that social media is banned and blocked in China.
If you can honestly sit there, look into the eyes of a suffering animal who is literally being flayed ALIVE and think that's acceptable - there's something seriously wrong with you!
This is so, so sad. Apparently people are stealing household pets and taking strays, that's a lot different than animals bred for consumption..... This torture doesn't seem like a 'culinary habit', it's just cruel.
I was shocked at it being called a festival, but apparently this is part of a broader festivity, and I read that local authorities have said they would prevent dog meat from being part of it. Even Chinese are opposed to it.

Have you actually read the article sheikhandbake?
It would be naive to think that even ethically raised and killed animals don't experience fear in their final moments but to create unnecessary fear and suffering is wrong. For the most part (although there are some exceptions), I couldn't care less what other people eat but there are a lot of horrible practices related to animals and how this festival is carried out is one of them. Nothing wrong with eating dog if that is your thing but don't torture it first.

As a matter of fact I don't eat meat so your glasshouse comment is misdirected.
You are missing the point, its not culinary preferences, its the torture and horrendous way they are killed that is the issue being objected to here.
All animals have a right to humane treatment regardless of whether they need culling or not.
The fact that there may be too many stray dogs and cats does not warrant skinning and boiling them alive and torturing them to make them taste better for people who have a taste for dog or cat meat.
Would you skin a p*g alive to make your bacon tastier?
When chickens, goats etc are killed for food, they are killed in the quickest way possible to reduce any suffering.
In Islam, you cannot eat an animal that has been tortured, even if its something generally permissible like chicken.
This event is barbaric because these animals will be tortured and it seems even eaten alive! I dont care if its a goat or a *** or a cat or a dog, torturing animals is just barbaric, for whatever purpose.

Do you deliberately torture cows and chickens and skin them alive to make them taste better?
So your logic is if cows, **** and chickens suffer its ok to do the same to dogs and cats, although there is no comparison between how the dogs and cats meet their end in this "festival" and the methods Livestock are killed in most countries.
The annual dog eating festival is to take place this Sunday in China. Thousands of dogs and cats will be tortured and killed to be eaten.

A global petition is being hosted to try to influence Chinese leaders to end this barbaric festival that targets pets and strays alike.
Stop Sunday's Dog & Cat Eating Festival!
