Hello! I need to get a bank account but I don't know where to start. My DH is with Standard Chartered and he doesn't recommend them at all. I have no salary but I have plenty of my own money so I hope that won't be a problem. At home, I bank with a part of the HSBC group but I haven't heard good things about them here. Do any of you have a similar issue where you have no salary but plenty of capital and if so, how did the banks treat you?

CBI are AMAZING! I was treated like a VIP by the Manager, and now when I need some quick fast assistance or emergency, shes there like a friend. The old fashioned banking that I remember when I went to the bank with my parents and grandparents. I wouldnt go anywhere else now and my new business account willl be with them. They have got my loyalty. SPeak with Aliya Al Mulla the Manager of the Itihad Road branch and let yourself be impressed. (Alternatively speak to Khuloud). They were so good that when I had my new bank account opened and operating I sent them both a bunch of flowers, and I dont send them willy-nilly!

Been with ENBD since I moved here, I'm quite happy with them. Good internet banking facilities, customer service is knowledgeable and helpful. I do want to change because I prefer to bank with an Islamic Bank, so if anyone has suggestions, would be appreciated:)

Banks sometimes freeze accounts for various reasons, the intrest rate is worse here and the banks are, generally, not very good so I don't trust them!

A lot of people seem very nervous about having money in an account here. What are you nervous of? TIA!

In my experience Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank is the best. I would not recommend Standard Chartered unless doing everything through the Dragonmart branch! Although personally I would leave capital in an offshore account or in a bank back home and spend DHs money! I never leave large sums of money here - just enough to cover what I need.

Going off thread does anyone know if a child can open an account here or does it have to be done via Mum's or Dad account? Any child under 18 will be treated as a minor - and the parent/guardian will need to deal on the child's behalf. So, to answer your question - technically the child can have an account, the account will bear his/her name but as a minor - and the 'major' will conduct all dealings until the child's 18th birthday. I think minimum age for opening an account with co-signing of parent is 16, but I'm not sure. Been some time since I last memorized the rules and regulations! :)

We bank with emirates NBD also and have always found them terrific. Marina branch but I don't think branches make a difference. We used to bank with HSBC but had such trouble with them would always recommend against the,. However, do use them in Australia, UK, and South Korea where we do banking and can't fault their service.

Thanks Touimi, I think I do need to speak to a relationship manager; that's a good idea. I have no income but plenty of capital so when I get asked the standard questions about income; I'm not sure what to say. As a bank you may have different experience with different people. I guess your question is pertaining to not having a source of income to show to the bank. Are you having it in another bank? As long as it is transferred through legal channel, there should not be a problem. Specially speak to relationship manager of a bank and they can guide you on this. I had wonderful experience with Emirates NBD DAFZA branch. They are amazing people.

I'm thinking of opening an account in the same bank as my DH ( Emirates NBD) to make it easy to transfer cash between accounts. Do they have a "housewife account"? Is their internet banking good? Also- is it possible to transfer money to and from an EUR account on the online banking with a reasonable fee? Many thanks in advance :-)

I had loads of frustrating moments with emirates nbd. I am not keen on them at all, but to be honest, i believe all banks are equally bad.

It seems as though the local banks are preferred to the western banks. Thanks for your opinions.

One of my friend used to enjoy ABN Amro in olden days. But I guess I would try with Citibank, if I were you. My experience with HSBC was not pleasant either.
