A little tangent here, cat kisses... How do they show affection? Puss comes up and puts her nose to mine which is v sweet :-) I may be converted to a cat person after all just don't tell anyone :-)

Oh Andrea - poor puss. This just breaks my heart. Just remind the parents as well, kittens bones and joints are very bendy at this age (like a baby) and for this damage to happen, it must have taken some pretty significant force - this was not just some accidental injury, as a byproduct of mishandling. Good luck - just yell out if you need anything. Thanks hon x

AndreaA I am so sorry this nightmare continues for you and your kitten. Sending good karma your way, but I know you'd really prefer a crate of Oyster Bay and a Bazooka. :) Absolutely spot on ;-)

to break the kitten's hip joint they must have used some force...... something seriously wrong with children who can inflict suffering on to an animal

Good for you and the other Mum - "Daddy" isn't going to care until he gets clipped in his wallet. That's what daughter has seen and learned. Daddy has to learn a lesson here IMHO and a 10,000 dirham price tag will make HIM stop and think (we hope) edited by marycatherine on 09/02/2011 I couldn't agree more, they seem to think their daughter is some innocent angle...how wrong they are! Wicked is the only word I can think of that they'd allow on here ;-)

Well at least one parent has a conscience and sees sense, let's hope she can reason with the others too. Cerdit to her for taking responsibility for her childs actions.

Tell them you'll report them to the animal cruelty people at the municipality and how would they like a 10,000 Dhs fine instead! Just spoken t the other mum who is still willing to pick up her 50% as she is still very upset with what happened and agrees it was dreadful. So together we are going to go and talk to Mum no.1 and explain her daughters part in all this. If she continues to maintain she won't pay then Animal Cruelty it is!

there is no pet insurance here anymore.... You should have said "doesn't she teach her children humanity" Oh it gets better, she's just been over and her husband has refused to pay a penny as his daughter didn't physically hurt the kitten! Oh what fun this is going to be! No Izzy we didn't but if they start refusing to pay I will! edited by AndreaA on 09/02/2011

Sorry to hear about little kitty Andrea. Pet insurance doesn't really ever pay out even if it still did exist. Maybe paying for your kittens treatment will teach these people a lesson and make them more proactive in teaching their children better. Hope kitty gets better soon.

AndraA - my response would be "don't you have insurance?" It's not a commentary on her child, or her child's demonstrated values (or more accurately, her child's reflection of what she has lived and learned from her parents). Hand her the bill and advise her the vet is awaiting payment. edited by marycatherine on 09/02/2011

Oh Andy...and poor Puss. At the very, very least I hope this family covers your costs. BIG lesson learned for them (I hope). I'm still gobsmacked that a child could treat an animal that way. Just not natural/normal and stinks of a nasty future for the little girl.

A quick update, Puss was able to have her x-rays today has her lungs are now clear thankfully (thats the good news!!) The bad news is the x-rays show that the children actually managed to break her hip joint whilst pulling on her leg so she needs to have orthopedic surgery next week to have a piece removed. I have been assured that as long as we have the operation asap she will be fine long term but that she is in a lot of pain at the moment and she will need some time to recover after the op. Oh and it's looking like costing around 3000AED! So I go with a copy of the existing bill which currently stands at 862AED to the mother of the 5 year old. Her first reaction was "Wow!, Don't you have insurance!". I'm yet to see the other parents as they were out but i'm sure they won't be too happy either. Hey ho! Puss is thankfully still in good spirits and still very loving and patient.

And, dare I say it, but my cat loves playing with tampons! She always rummages through my drawers and tears apart a whole pack and delights in chasing them around the room... Just make sure you put them away before any visitors arrive! edited by Water baby on 03/02/2011 Lol thats so funny! I got her some little balls today but she was totally disinterested so I got DD (almost 2) to run around the living room trailing a skipping rope behind her. They both enjoyed it and hopefully DD will sleep all the better for it :-)

I go to Al Safa Vets, and they have lots of great toys for puss. We recently got a little fluffy thing on the end of a long stick, which has provided hours of enjoyment. They also have packs of tiny little colourful plastic mice, which are very small and thus perfect for a kitten to pick up. It's so cute watching them trot around with a bright green or purple mouse stick proudly sticking out of their mouth. If you don't have time to go out because of the kids, there are lots of things that your cat will like. Scrunched up paper or foil work a treat, as do disposable plastic forks or spoons. And, dare I say it, but my cat loves playing with tampons! She always rummages through my drawers and tears apart a whole pack and delights in chasing them around the room... Just make sure you put them away before any visitors arrive! Also, our cats also love Edamame beans. It's so strange, they go crazy for them! They love to kick them around, and then eat them. They are just soy beans, so hopefully they don't do any harm! edited by Water baby on 03/02/2011

my cat loves eating lemon grass, have a small plant on the patio and she happily munches it.
