As for toys, to my cash detriment, I've found (with my cats - your kitty may have more sophisticated tastes than mine ;) ) a box - any box, or a paper bag (the ones you can get when you buy at certain shops) are ALWAYS a big hit. Having said my cats are unsophisticated - I have had success with one of those strings with a toy at one end tied to a stick. My neighbour just bought a string of gold beads (like you might use on a Christmas tree) and her cat will play with that. One thing nearly all cats like is cat grass - you can buy a small container in the pet section at LULU and it is called cat grass, add water, and grow grass. I have one that I have to keep in a closed off room otherwise one cat would have it all over the room. In fact, I discard the container it comes in and actually plant it in a flower planter. They love it. My cat's "thing" is wine corks (cannot imagine how he has so many...!) and Tunnocks caramel wafer wrappers screwed into a ball. He will happily fetch them for hours. Just means I have to drink more wine and eat more Tunnocks- hard job...

Dubai71, do you mean the one that is very near to the Seaworld restaurant (my personal GPS is based on food)? Hmm not sure, think Seaworld is the other side of SZR. If you are going over SZR from the Madinat (ie going to Barsha), then MoE is on your right as is LuLu. Do a u at those lights and there is a pet shop in on the right. Not saying it's great but the best one I have found.

A quick update for you, puss was back at the vets this morning for a checkup and to see if she was well enough to have a general so they could dray her legs. Unfortunately the vet still isn't happy her lungs are perfectly clear so we've postponed it for a week to see if she improves enough to do it then. She's quite happy in hassle and as sweet and loving as ever she just needs some rest. We are knowing keeping her in or only allowig her out when we are here to watch her. SamD my evening involved a little too much vino but was much more than the previous one thanks :-) x Ps can anyone recommend a good place to get pet things pls (I'm new to all the pet care :-) ) edited by AndreaA on 02/02/2011 Gee whizz- poor wee thing. Please keep us posted. I cannot remember the name of the pet shop where we've got some stuff but.... if you're going east through Barsha from Safa Park (with MoE and LuLu on your right), it's on the opposite side of the road- ie do a u at the lights as if going to the traffic place and then in on the right. Sorry, directions are not my strongest point!

It's something to take very seriously as there have been many studies and profiles linking animal cruelty in children to violent criminals as adults. Additionally, some children act out abuse that they themselves are subject or witness to. Animal abuse in children is a very serious thing to watch. I know it's always tough to involve the police, you don't want to make the wrong move and ruin someone else's life or to make trouble for yourself. But it is definitely something to be aware of and potentially act on. edited by gleekfamily on 01/02/2011 Yes and it's a good point you're making. BUT the police here simply do not care about animal cruelty and that's a simple fact of this place. The OP will be wasting her time. Better to recommend the parents take the child to see a psychologist. Precisely. You HAVE remember where you are.

Yes it is haram to harm animals, but it still happens 'alot'. They honestly won't care. Animal cruelty is rife in the UAE and that's a sad fact. You only have to look at the state of animals in pet shops, or the Sharjah animal market. Is anything ever done about it?

I know this may sound extreme, but if you don't get a positive response from the child's parents...might you consider talking to the police? I mean in a more preventative way...who knows what could happen if the child decides to one day push your child into the pool or into a wall. Just ask that the police officer speak to the parent and child about the consequences of such destructive and dangerous behavior (kind of like a "scared straight" tactic). I know it really does sound extreme, but it's worrisome how many people snap and cause mass destruction (ie Arizona last week, Columbine, Virginia Tech before that)...and people who knew these kids said something was wrong with them, yet no one went with their gut and talked to the police. You never know the impact you can have, the lives you can save by stepping in. I hear what you are saying......even if it is stretching the point a bit.........but seriously, what reaction do you honestly think the OP would get at the police station? They would have NO idea what she was talking about, and worse, not efen begin to understand why the child was in the wrong. Example......a close friend, who had followed and got car details for the driver who had laughingly chucked a tiny kitten into SZ Road where it had been finally fatally hit before my friend could get back to it...........was told at Bur Dubai Police Station.........with a sneer and lots of guffaws from the peanut gallery.............what do you want us to do, charge him for littering? Remember where you are. It's actually haram to injure / harm animals... It may well be..............but that is certainly one ruling which does not seem to stick.

LT is right, the police won't care about this. The only place you might get a reaction is with the animal welfare department of the Municipality.

I'm sad to say I am concerned for my children and they will not be allowed anywhere near them. I am still stunned by the whole experience to be honest!

OMG... the girl was 8? I have a daughter the same age and she would not hurt a hair on an animal...... I would keep a wide berth from that kid.... I'm so sorry you had to go through this.. 8 year old girl was shocking enough and to learn she did it as a result of issues of being bullied herself by a FIVE year old!!!!!!!!!! My LO is 5 and a 'bully' I thought, as she so much as doesn't put up with a teenager cutting a queue in front of her, she also guards her older sis (who is the softer one) and tells off any of the older one's class mates (9yr olds) if they were to be unkind to her sister. Well she doesn't take s**t from adults even - remember a women telling her off in the lift asking her to not touch the buttons in a rude manner (she wasn't!) - I didn't have to intervene - she turned around looked her in the eyes and said 'why would you tell me that, when I didn't touch them, maybe your children are naughty'. I didn't say a word - stood there zapped. The 5 year old in your compound is a different league! I would be concerned for my kids

Freckles if you need anything contact us on facebook, that's what we're here for. Puss is at the vets, they have checked her and she's ok but they say it can catch up on her. Apparently lung/drowning issues can't happen up to 3 days after the event. I'll keep you posted. X

Hope the kitten is ok and I am appalled at the way this thread has developed! I really want to be at the meeting today Sals and Andrea but DS is still not right. DD has finally gone back to school today but I'm sure all the other mums would thrilled if I brought DS and his strep throat to the meeting. Really p1ssed I can't be there as so want to be involved and I need an adopted sister right now...especially with a sick child and a migraine. Good luck both of you and let me know how it turns out. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The funny thing is the principle behind the fairy godmother has been proven so well by this thread. It's about helping someone who asks for help instead of judging them! it's not a bad principle to live by Amen Sistaaaah! I'm going to need a lot of fairy godmothers for my brood of children.

Andrea,I realise your upset and angry with what has happened to your family pet.Your first post indicated that the cat was scared out its wits and was unable to stand properly(wobbly).I am nobody and my pedestal doesnt even have a swivel yet ..but if you are really concerned about the health of your animal that was Stuck in a drain hole of a swimming pool..I am just surprised that nothing has been done this evening to see if the cat is injured or has swallowed water..and subsequently after your post about how angry and upset you are and how bad the kittens health seemed to be by your own admissions and then saying that you can't personally take it to the vets because you have an event that you need to be filmed at ... My concern is for the welfare of the kitten..if you are stuck and you want it to see a vet now then I am more than prepared to help out one struggling mother in dubai.. Thank you for the offer but on this occasion I will decline!
