You never ever put the head back for treating a nose bleed. This has been an urban myth for years. Blood trickles down the throat and can cause choking. The correct treatment is to tip the head forward and pinch the nose just under the nasal bone for a few minutes. Once the bleeding stops, do not blow the nose for a while as you will dislodge the clot which has formed quite naturally. If bleeding continues for more than half an hour then medical treatment should be sought. The application of a cold compress to the area where you are holding the nose can help to constrict the blood vessels. People who have severe, frequent nose bleeds often need packing (NEVER do this as a first aid method) nasal drops or in some cases cauterising.
my little boy struggled with really bad nose bleeds when we first moved over. You have to pinch the top of the nose quite hard and as the others have said keep head down - not tipped back. He got used to having them and knew what to do even though he was only tiny. we ended up having his nose quarterised on one of our summer trips back home and it ended all the nosebleeds overnight!
Hope it eases off for your little one.
Thanks ladies, And thanks for the head forward tip, I remember always getting my head put back as a child if I had a nose bleed, but had since seen that this isn't advised. I remember the sensation of the blood running down back of my throat - gross!! Now, back to my cold salty water soaking of bed clothes to get all the blood stains out!!!
I would guess it's the temp drying out her nasal membranes (dad & I used to get nose bleeds in summer) try a Fess/saline spray (kids' ones avalable) or, when they got bad dad used to putlanolin cream or vaseline up my nose (gross, but worked)
Also once I got a bleed I used to run cold water over the insides of my wrists, brought my temp down fast (as an adult). for a child, I guess a cold cloth on the back of the neck would do it.
Goes without saying for a 3 yo, but any 'exploring' in the nose is bound to have worse effects in the dry air here ;)
We've just moved here 3 weeks ago, and my 2 year old girl has started taking nose bleeds (some of them pretty bad). Has anyone else experienced this after moving? Just wondering if it's maybe to do with change in temperature between Scotland and here. TIA
