AnonDubai - the CT scan was done long time back in the UK Harley Street and it confirmed it but we then moved out here and he never went to see another doctor, just complaints about it. Has he had an endoscopy? Not yet, hence I would like to know which doctors you can recommend here. Unfortunately, I cannot really give you a reference because I ended up not having more than a CT scan done. I only saw this ENT twice. What I would recommend is that you go see any ENT that your insurance covers and start there. Ask for an endoscopy and what treatment options are available, but not antibiotics. The ENT also proposed a 5 day steroid treatment, which I could not have done because I am breastfeeding but it is probably ok for your DH. He really should have this checked out. Living daily with a blocked nose is no way to live! edited by AnonDubai on 14/06/2011

My DH has been suffering from Chronic Sinusitus for about 10 years and hasn't found anything yet that would make it better and he isn't too trusting with doctors. Which doctor did you use? Any recommendations? AnonDubai, great news that they found the source of your problem and that you didn't have to go through further tests. Cleopatra, did your DH ever have a CT scan done? I'm only asking because I would have never believed that I was having allergies if I hadn't had the CT scan done. SJ Aussie, reading your experience is the reason I really don't want to have the deviated septum surgery. I know the recovery is horrible. However, my DH had it done so I know that you will feel much better soon. Thanks for keeping in touch! I guess this chapter is closed for me, for now...

Sounds like good news that it is maybe just allergy related. Fingers crossed it is not the deviated nasal septum causing the problems. I won't go into too many details on EW about my op other than to say despite having a very gentle caring experienced surgeon, it is a very invasive operation. First 2 days living **** while my nose was packed with gauze (can't breathe/sleep/eat/was dizzy) followed by slow recovery at home. 5 days down just starting to recognise my face in the mirror and get some breathing happening through my nose. Day 3 I had a melt-down in the Dr's room to rival that of any toddler but was quickly reassured that the worst was over. I just keep thinking long term... in a few weeks I am sure I am going to feel great and no more chronic sinusitus... ;) Edited to say I am 35 and these bouts of chronic sinusitus have only just really kicked-in in the last year or so too. edited by SJAussie on 14/06/2011

I also got diagnosed with acute sinusitis :( was given antibiotics because I had an acute ear infection as well (but the wrong antibiotics, so had to have another course). Was given Ocean Spray to use first, once in each nostril twice a day, then half an hour later another nasal spray which was Otrivin. This all also led to Vertigo which was not at all nice!!! Then also had to take tablets for the Sinusitis which were Ciprogen. The relief was amazing. Was told by the Doctors a lot of it is down to the A/C here. Hope it all goes well whichever route you have to take, it's worth it to get rid.

AnonDubai - how did the CT scan and endoscopy go? I am 5 days down, post surgery. Still want to know what it was like? Oh! I was thinking about you! How did the surgery go? Well, fortunately I had the CT scan because the results came back and showed that my sinuses were perfectly normal and I have no infection at all! Needless to say, I did not have to have the endoscopy. So the doctor said that it seems I have just been struck down with allergies and that I need to learn to manage them better. So he prescribed me Rhinomer, which someone mentioned below, and I think it has been working! My nose has been clear now for over a week and it had not been like that for a very long time! I have been feeling so much better although Rhinomer is a horrible thing to stick up your nose. It is like you are swallowing ocean water! I guess I never thought of allergies because I didn't think they would just start up at the age of 31, but it is clear that that is what it is. I do have a deviated septum, though, but it has never caused me problems.

My daughter has suffered from chronic sinusitis and postnasal drip for years. A specialist at American Hospital finally put her on Avamys, a steroid nasal spray, 2 puffs each nostril twice day. I can't tell you how amazing the difference is. For the first time in years my daughter can breathe through her nose, feels great and doesn't have nasty breathe. It has been ana amazing medication for us. Might be worth a try. I've been using that one too, to no avail. But thanks for your suggestion!

I also suffer from chronic sinisitus. After 10 years of living in Dubai i have finally managed to get it under control as am allergic to dust and have recently found out that i am lactose intolerant. The lactose intolerance is the major factor though, since finding out and avoiding all dairy my symtoms have reduced dramitically! I also use rhinomer nasal wash before 2 puffs of Nasonex twice daily to wash out the sinus before using the spray. Also noticed that an upper respitory tract infection can give identical symptoms to sinus infection and have found singulair daily a great relief also. Good luck, keepinvestigating until you find the underlying reason for the problem (also have a deviated septum but has never bben the real reason)

Anon I have suffered from chronic sinusitis for the last 20 years. It always starts in Jan and does not go until I leave in the summer. Now I use a neti pot to help during the bad periods. antibiotics never worked....UNTIL this year....I had an absess and had to take 1 gram Augmentin X2 for 14 days......and guess what? Along with the absess healing, the sinuses have cleared. I am able to breathe again and the pain has gone.

Same thing happened to me when hit my 40's..never had nose issues before..was living in Houston at the time..thought it was allergies although only showed symptoms of post nasal drip and constant headaches..nothing worked, tried everything..have to say the saline wash with specialised pot did help. I ended up doing the op...suffered for few days afterwards due to uncomfortable packing up nose, could not sleep well. Once that was out, I saline rinsed every day , multiple times and it healed super fast. I also had deviated septum corrected...not had a problem since. On the odd ocassion I have that stuffy feeling, I steam my nose with water and olbas and it does the trick.

My ENT said the problem actually gets worse with time for some reason... he said to expect to regret the op for the first few days but then better after that. No pain, just uncomfortable swelling and maybe bruising. Overnight in hospital and then 5 days recovery at home. Am so sick of being sick (make sense?) that I am actually looking forward to the operation. Interested to hear also how your scan goes on Sunday. My op is Thursday so will let you know after how it went and how I feel. If I don't post for a few days after... you know it was harder than I thought.... ok I will update you next week about the results. Thanks for your input.

AnonDubai - I read your post and I could have been reading something written by myself! I have suffered chronic sinusitis a bit in the last few years and especially this year - 3 big bouts (several weeks each time) and have had 3 courses of antibiotics to clear bad infections and I hate taking antibiotics. Finally got on to a good ENT and had a CT scan done on my sinus and came back with a badly deviated nasal septum on the left side which is what causes my nose to be completely blocked, no draininage and leads to the chronic sinusitis and then also throat infections. Am having an operation this week to correct it as having looked at the scan myself can see there is no other option and am desperate to feel healthy again. I totally agree that after a while it begins to affect your overall health and feeling, very draining. From all the research I have read, for a few days discomfort after surgery, I will feel so much better after - or at least that's what I am hoping! Have you had a scan to look at teh cause of your chronic sinusitis? There must be a reason why you get it.... I am having a CT scan on Sunday and an endoscopy on Monday. I am hoping that we can know the cause after that. This is the first time I have had it so that is why I am hesitant to do the surgery. The doctor said I definitely have a deviated septum but I have always had that and it never caused me problems before. I'd like to keep in touch with you to find out how your surgery went and how you feel afterwards.

Alternative medicine works really well for sinusitis. Acupuncture is particularly effective. I recommend Steve at the dubai physiotherapy clinic edited by sarassister on 03/06/2011 Thanks for the suggestion but I'm not sold on alternative medicine.

I had chronic sinusitis, hayfever etc qrowing up that left me with a permenant red rash under my nose,( not very nice at the tender age of 15) I had the deviated septum surgery done and I have never looked back. I really don't want to go down the surgery route, though, because I am 31 years old and have never had this problem before, which makes me think that surgery might not be effective for my case.

My son had that problem. He had been prescribed Nasonex and antibiotics on and off for a few years. We finally saw a pediatrician from South Africa here who told him to use a saline nasal spray (Sinomer or the equivalent) 2x in each nostril, 2-3x per day. That was 2 years and he hasn't had any problems since. Thanks. I will give that a try!
