Reported sightings of deadly saw-scaled vipers in Hattan Community, I think they have also been seen in the Ranches and in Mirdiff in the past.

These are very agressive snakes and look like this http://www.uaeinteract.com/nature/reptile/snk01.asp

The artilce reports that "the anti-venom for poisonous UAE snakes are usually kept at Rashid Hospital in Dubai and Al Qasimi Hospital in Sharjah."

In 12 years of 95% villa haitation i have seen nothing bar a little redback in my villa in Muhaisnah. I have had dogs so therefore have been out and about and I have lived in Mirdif and the Ranches. I am not saying these things are not here, but it seems easier to not see them than to see them. I have had a lovely pair of green parrots in my garden which are a pleasure to watch as well as the hoopoes and a neighbouring peacock! Positive thoughts people :)

I stood on and was stung by a scorpion in the shower when I was about 5 yrs old. Also found many in our bedroom when we were younger. We have land in Hatta that we want to build on, only problem is that it is heavily infested with scorpions, and I really don't want another sting.

in mirdif - 78 street we had lots of red backs, camels spiders and snakes. but if you know what you are looking for you can recognise redback webs (I taught my kids to do so too), don't stick your hand into dark spaces and just be a bit aware, you will be fine. There are huntsman spiders over here too - not venomous but pretty scary!

I must have been unlucky too. My DD was on a school trip and I was told that she was stung by a scorpion as they said that there were no snakes in the UAE, but after having read the link I think that it’s more likely that she was bitten by a snake as she had 2 puncture wounds (which had gone through her trainer) I had a camel spider in my garden in Emirates Hills. My friend down the road had a nest of red back spiders in her pool. I’ve seen sea snakes on the palm. I do think other posters are right in saying that there are worse things to worry about. My friend in the UK went to pick her children up from school, before leaving her house she put a load of washing on. When she returned home the house had been burnt down because the washing machine had over heated. The fire brigade told her that washing machine and tumble dryers are the main cause of fire in homes so think twice before you put them on when you are out of the house.

You're more likely to get nipped by a barracuda in the sea than anything else here.

I have had a snake in a pot, picked up in Hatta, I had a red back spider, in my garden, a camel spider and a dead scorpion in my pool Camel spiders are not spiders and not venomous. They might look scary, but they don't pose any real danger. OK, if you picked one up it might bite you, which would certainly be painful and if you didn't get it treated properly it could become infected, but that's about it. Scorpions and redbacks aren't anything to get scared about either. The average suburban garden in Sydney can play host to all manner of seriously venomous spiders and snakes, way more dangerous than anything in the UAE, but nobody there seems to worry unduly. edited by Madge_Gustard on 22/06/2012

I have had a snake in a pot, picked up in Hatta, I had a red back spider, in my garden, a camel spider and a dead scorpion in my pool. Im in the Ranches. I know one of the Mums from school had a small snake in her garden a few weeks ago, also in the Ranches. So they are out there, but it would not stop me moving into a villa. If you have a gardener and spray rountinely throughout the year then, you should be fine.

ok, I am now officially scared and thinking of changing my plans about moving into villa Please, can we get this into some kind of proportion? Yes, there are venomous snakes in this part of the world. No, you are not likely ever to see them, less still get close enough to be bitten by one. We have been in Dubai for over 15 years and we have NEVER, repeat NEVER, seen any snakes, even when out in remote wild areas. Snakes are not a concern here, they really aren't. This isn't Australia, or Africa, or India, or Pakistan, or Indonesia, or Malaysia, or any of the many other places in the world where extremely venomous animals routinely live around, and often in, people's homes. If you want to be worried about something here, be worried about the standard of driving. You are many many [i'>many[/i'> times more likely to be injured or killed on the roads here than you are by any wild animal, and yet nobody seems to worry about that - but on the incredibly rare occasions that snakes are seen in villa areas (and you can bet that 99% of people in villas have never seen snakes either), suddenly there's mass panic. The same thing happens with redback spiders. It makes absolutely no sense at all. True, true. And of course, there is always the danger of an apartment fire, which has happened here more than fatal snake bites, I believe.

True there's more chance of being killed on the roads than being bitten by a snake here. The reason we are seeing increased incidents of snake encounters is that new developments are being build on land that is home territory to snakes, so the more we encroach on the snakes habitat the more chance there is of meeting up with them. This is why I would not live out in new areas. The same happens everywhere where urban sprawl cuts into nature.

This is enough to put anyone off going to Dubai ....... Venomous and poisonous snakes that can strike at any time, biting insects that will infect you with killer diseases, and spiders that are only inches from your head whilst you sleep. There are many different venomous and poisonous snakes around, especially during the summer. Below are some of the nastiest creatures that you may find coiled up asleep in your slippers, under the bed or waiting by the car as you begin to enjoy your vacation in Dubai. It goes on...... There are many very venomous snakes here that will kill a man if treatment is not given quickly. There are False Horned Vipers, the Arabian Cobra, the Saw Scaled Viper and the deadly Horned Viper, these are the names of the deadliest snakes in the United Arab Emirates ( UAE ) The Arabian Cobra, or Egyptian Cobra as it is also called, is found in every location in the UAE, including Dubai. These beautiful snakes can grow to 2.4 meters ( 8 feet ) in length, and have the distinguishing shaped head that all cobras have, and they are not afraid of man, and will enter into a house without to much concern. They will slither away if threatened, but won't go far, it will turn and take the standard striking pose, raising its head high, ready to bite. The venom this snake will inject into its prey is neurotoxin, and this venom will begin to attack the nervous system within minutes, this will stop the nerve signals to the lungs and then the heart, which then leads to death. http://billericky.hubpages.com/hub/Poisonous-and-venous-spiders-and-snakes-in-Dubai

Two years ago my 14 year old son came into the house with a snake he had found in the garden. Quickly proceeded to put it in a carrier bag and went to give it to the security guard at the gate. He refused to take it and made me call his supervisor. I kid you not when I say 4 guards arrived in a car and they made me put it into the boot of the car. You would have thought it was a bomb by their faces!! Then last year I was bitten by a snake whilst out walking the dog. Put my hand down into bushes to pick up what the dog had left and obviously scared the snake. I went to Medcare hospital because it was closest and they sent me to Rashid for anti venom injection along with a few other injections for good measure. Both incidents happened in the Ranches!!

Well to be honest, they are the 'residents' and it's us invading their territory really. The majority of snakes will just leave you alone, and only become aggressive if they feel threatened. I still recall a thread here a few years ago that concerned snakes and one lady said nothing was printed in the paper about them because the UAE couldnt stand the publicity surrounding the fact there were snakes in Dubai. I couldnt believe what I was reading because the person really did believe what she was saying. It just didnt occur to her whatsoever that people didnt perhaps feel the need to mention it in the papers because anyone with any level of common sense would know that of course there would be snakes in this part of the world and that they lived in The Ranches etc long before we did.

We are on 78 street and have not had any in our garden that I know of, others on our street have had them though! (And the scorpions, redbacks, camelspiders etc, lol)

we had a couple of these in Mirdiff and they will strike without provocation. They are very fast and very aggressive. I often see their trails when walking on the sand dunes and there are quite a lot of them. If you do happen to see one be very careful!!!

[b'>We saw a snake crossing the road [/b'>in front of us last weekend. DH tried to convince himself it was a construction tape getting blown in the wind - the "tape" was neither yellow/black nor red/white stripes but instead beige. was he with a chicken ?

Madge, I will disagree with you, on the Saw Sidewinder, I have never seen one without it trying to attack. I have seen a large number in Dubai over the years, and some in extremely remote locations. The noise that they make is very clear though.

There must be lots of rodents around for the snakes to eat, they wouldn't hang around close to humans if they didn't have a source of food. They won't bite you unless you hurt them, usually by stepping on them or shoving your hand into whatever dark corner they're hiding in.
