Do you wash your meat?

We were always taught to wash beef, lamb and chicken before cooking. Wondering if everyone else does this or do you just pop it into the pot? I have noticed on all cooking shows that they just pop the meat directly from the packaging into the pot. Is this normal? What are the benefits of not washing it or washing it for that matter? I know I will never change my mind on the washing thing (I even wash my mince and wring it through a muslin cloth) but it would be interesting to know what is the norm in other households/cultures?

So when you cook a steak to medium rare do you wash the meat? Does the temp go up to the recommended right through the slice of steak so as to eliminate all the bacteria that cooking normally does? there is no bacteria in the middle of a steak ... the middle of a beef burger maybe as its minced ... and you only get worms/parasites from pork.thats why its really important that pork is well cooked .. chicken or any poultry should NEVER be washed, beef and pork should be sealed before cooking to retain the flavour and juices. all meat in vacuum packs are gassed especially chicken... sound ridiculous .. but it's true.. it helps with storage..the smell you get is from the gas the slime is long storage ...most chicken here is imported and most has already been frozen ... check the packs - especially carrefour ... when you unwrap beef of pork initially it has no colour ... them once unwrapped .. the meat will "bloom" .. soften and get some colour back and its smell will go ..

It's common for Carribean and Africans preparing meals to wash meat and fish and often with the use of lime too. It gets rid of any residual bits from the fish market like scales and blood clots and stuff... not a meat eater myself but still wash most of the meat I prepare

I don't like the title of this thread. :D I was waiting and should have known it would be you :D Oh, so I'm predicatable, am I? :( :D YES, thought this was what the thread was about and wondered a multitude of questions that probably are better not posted at this time. [b'>And who buys slimey chicken[/b'>??????? This all has to do with the quality of meat you buy, good quality now ash, seafood always should be washed. I do, well I used to. That's why I stopped buying chicken here, its always gross! You can never tell if its slimey or not through the packet, doesn't matter how much $$$ spent, it always looks and smells disgusting IMO. Goodness knows what goes into the local fresh chicken or what they're fed on. Eeww.

Hmmm.....was just preparing to make chicken soup. I bought the bone bits and pieces for the soup base and I washed them. I washed them in a steel colander inside the sink and I doused them with salt and wash the heck out of them while pulling off any fat bits or tiny bone fragments. Can't imagine not washing them....eeewwww!

I only buy chicken breasts from Spinneys, and often there is that slimy membrane thing, and bits of white (fat?)which I cut off, then wash the meat.

If anything feels slimy it goes in the bin at our house, the only thing I scrub is potatoes to get the visible dirt off, and rinse things like rice and dried beans etc. to get rid of foreign bits. Never get sick from my own cooking *touch wood*.

What's a thong used for in a kitchen? (serious question here lol) Take a look here, www.kitchenthongs.com I use them for gripping and flipping the meat, for serving it, etc. I LOVE that 'infomercial'!

Don´t wash red meat as I think it would actually harm the meat by doing so - in relation to the meat juice going out of the meat and making it less tender. On the other hand we don´t usually get parasites and worms on our meat which is more common in some countries.

I have always washed poultry but not red meat or pork. Not really sure why...just seen mom doing it I suppose. I did have a guest for dinner recently though that asked that very same question because she always washed every kind of meat and had noticed that some people didn't. Her brother is a chef so she asked him and he said no he never does...might be a preference thing. I have come across meat that had a little too much blood on it to my liking and gave it a rinse but as a general rule I don't. I am however one of them crazies who spray everything down with antibacterial wash daily and especially before and after preparing any food. I also wash my fruits and veg with soapy water when I bring it home...even if it has to be peeled....this keeps the little fruit flies away from my bananas as well I find.

What's a thong used for in a kitchen? (serious question here lol) I think we spell it tongs. If its a whole chicken or turkey I rinse it but I pour boiling water on it then cold water.... makes the skin crispy. Also rinse chicken depending on how I'm making it and if the skin is on. True Alberta here with lots of friends who have farms or know of butchers.... no prewashing my beef.

So when you cook a steak to medium rare do you wash the meat? Does the temp go up to the recommended right through the slice of steak so as to eliminate all the bacteria that cooking normally does? The reason i wash my meat isn't necessarily because of bacteria but more to get rid of any gunky bits - bone "dust" or loose bits of fat/sinew etc.
