Does second hand really sell?

We're trying to sell a few furniture items, all from Ikea and have had no interest at all for the past 10 days. I don't think the prices are high, I was thinking what amount I would pay for them when I priced them, and they are all in great shape. However, nobody is interested. We are leaving the country in the weekend for good and I'd really like to get rid of them but i can't give them away for peanuts as we need a little bit of cash right now and DH keeps dreaming about getting a good value for them.
This is my first experience selling stuff and I am getting panicked. Does anybody buy second hand furniture at all? What should I do with it?

Thanks for the reply Fianna. It's not the one I'm looking for, but good luck with the selling.

Fairfield, i've got the Hopen chest of 4 drawers, brown/ black color. I'd like 250 for it. I've just sold the bookcases and feel like the worst seller in the world. I dropped the price so much that now i feel bad about it, it was real peanuts! It's the first time i'm selling stuff so i guess i can easily be taken for a ride by experienced hagglers. Don't be too hard on yourself. The second-hand market in Dubai is a buyers market. There is so much available and when the new IKEA prices were low, people expect a steal. We sold our immaculate IKEA bookshelves and wardrobes for about 30% of the new price. Any higher than that and we didn't get a single enquiry.

Don't knock yourself, it is always tough to sell stuff and all too easy to buy it! Think how much money you are saving by not taking all these things back home! When we left Belgium we sent a whole heap of stuff to a furniture warehouse and I think they gave some of the items away in the end, my Mum was more upset than me as she had given me lots of these items when she downsized (and I had no choice in getting them!!), but I was just glad not to arrive in the UAE with too much furniture!

Miss Balamory I have a couple of Expedit bookcases( one is 4x4 the other is 2x4), a children's bunk bed, one sideboard kitchen unit and a chest of drawers. Also a few baby things. And some books! Had a couple of garage sales and NOBODY got any books- mostly adults books but a few children ones! I'd like to give the books away to a library or something like that? Is it possible? Fianna, Could you send me a photo of the kitchen sideboard if it is still available? 4 side kicks at g mail dot com (no spaces) TIA

I sold quite alot of our furniture at the beginning of the year from Ikea using Dubizzle. I did put pictures up as well. In answer to your question Yes second hand does sell. I suppose it is all about timing. I had those book shelves which I sold for 150 each. It's better to sell them cheaply then not get anything for them at all.

you could try donating the books to the Old Library at Ductac, Mall of the Emirates.

I've generally done 50-60% off. I had a garage sale but none of the big items got sold, just electronics and smaller bits and pieces. I also have baby things that DD outgrew, like her mosses basket that I get no interest in. And that is a really good brand. And then DH comes and says put a higher price and then we let it drop to what we'd like! Grrrrrrrrrr! I should just let him try to sell! If you have a few things you could bunch together for a price say moses basket, clothes, toys etc you might get more interest.

As Ikea stuff is so cheap to buy in the first place compared to the other stores out here, people want it for next to nothing. Mark it down to get rid and just think you are better getting something for it instead of nothing at all.

I have sold all my furniture items on Dubizzle within days of posting. I sell for at least 60% off and tend to price it a 100aed or so higher then if they come look or seem serious I price it lower. There are plenty no shows and the occasional weirdo as well as the ones begging for it for next to nothing. I believe the ad stays up for a month so maybe repost. Ikea is a hard sell because of the sales so you should price even lower Also, can you provide transport? if so post that

At least 50 % off on IKEA furniture, with so many sales around and many furniture shops offer free delivery your price has to be very competitive. I recently sold some things on Dubizzle, everything was at least 60 % off original selling price (and that was an item never used) all in very good condition.

I sold all my items on Dubizzle with ease. The prices were cheap but then they are second hand items so anything is a bonus. Have a look at general prices on Dubizzle to see if you're pricing too high. Photos always help to. Good Luck

Have you put pictures up? Are they in the classifieds here as well? Another thing you could try and do is rather than put a price say all offers considered, then people will come and look at them and then make an offer and you can decide then and there if you're happy with the offer. Stuff does sell, but most people only want to buy second hand if they get a pretty large discount, I've found when selling things on Dubizzle, if they're priced a bit too high no one contacts me, but if the price is a bit lower then I get loads of people interested. How much are you discounting the stuff compared to new?

perhaps try a garage or house sale, people might come round to take a look? Ive tried selling on Dubizzle before and also not had much luck. Good luck!
