Thought I would share my shock and amazement of what I saw this morning.

Taking my son to DBS, driving through springs on the 4 lanes road and this one car really just couldn't keep in the lane. I was anxiously approxing to overtake and really keeping my eye out so she didn't go into the side of me.

What shocked me was her about 5 year old son, sat in the front passenger seat no seatbelt, leaning across helping Mummy stear the Land Cruiser!!!

When will these people learn, what will it take for it to sink in, that kids should be in the back and be buckled up!

..and the saddest part is? We have constant daily patrols in Motor City handing out parking tickets to people who leave their vehicles in non-parking spots BUT still in fairly obscure areas just to quickly pop over to spinneys....or to cars who may have parked out of parking zone but still in an area thats not bothering anyone..all due to the huge lack of parking in these areas....yes it bugs me when they do that, but i think these patrols are of more use on the actual roads, pulling over idiots like the women described in your stories...yes sure, hand out the parking fines, but is it necessary to have the whole force in Motor City 24/7?!!? when just across the road in the Springs/Meadows areas we constantly hear of blithering idiots who put other people's lives in danger?! I think its not just lack of education, but the "business" approach to tickets/fines here...its all about raking in the cash from the easiest targets...but idi*ts who can't seem to fathom the repercussions of driving with your kid wildly bouncing in the front, or nearly running over pedestrians, roam free... I reckon they should focus less on parking violators and more on the army of uneducated/spoiled drivers in this city. The parking tickets outside Spinneys are issued by the security men and they're just "advisory" lol..i know because i got one the first time i parked there - i didn't know you're not supposed to !! Yeah they do that too, but haven't you noticed lately how many coppers there are? Its like a swarm of bees around honey. And for them, that little spinneys spot is like a gold mine i think...i dont see a problem with people stopping there tbh.... you should have seen the advisory tickets during the first few months when motor city was open...my god it was hilarious....they were all clearly written out by hand by the security guys themselves, and you really couldn't make out what they were advising people to do!! lol

Nipy35 a saw the same thing a couple of weeks back , was on the hatta/oman road past dragonmart and there was a land cruiser swerving all over the lanes. Cautiously I tried to get past him and what do I see ? A 2-3 year old sat on daddys lap steering the car ?! Going 90-100kph. It was a saudi plate but still ... was very shocked someone would do that on a main highway which was relatively busy ... shocking. edited by lucky4uitsme on 06/10/2011

Best thing is to speak to someone at the school - I can email you a proposal of what I do to show either the school nurse (they have safety cirriculum sometimes) or head teacher. The email is on the website under the contact tab ; www.buckleupintheback.com Thank you!

Saw a little girl in the back of a 4x4 jumping around the other day and wondered when the law comes in for restraint of children? Thought I read it was coming in? It was a recommendation for the law to be introduced and unfortunately this has been the same message for a couple of years now - it's only law to buckle up in the front and to be over 10 years to sit in the front. For anyone interested and doesn't know, I run a campaign about wearing seatbelts and restraints for children. I present at schools, nurseries, colleges, offices, anywhere that will have me! Please take a look at the facebook page here - https://www.facebook.com/BuckleUpInTheBack or the website www.buckleupintheback.com I believe that change CAN happen - if no-one does anything then of course we'll all see the same sort of things on the roads - just by telling 1 other person to Buckle Up or telling your school to book a presentation with me (it's all free) then you are helping to save lives. Redlesley how can I get my DS's school to have you over for a talk? I think it's a fantastic idea, & would love to help promote your campaign at their school :)

Redlesley -I just wanted to say what a fantastic job you are doing .I have followed your campaign in the press and I agre with you that it can and WILL make a difference . My eldest DS is 14 and does wear his seat belt but invariably if I give a friend of his a lift -regardless of nationality- I have to ask them to do their seat belt up .In fact ,I wait for a minute first to see if they will and then ask them . I do worry about them in taxis and have never forgotten that advert with the teenagers in the back of the car without seat belts after having bought pizza and the car crashes and the lad in front is killed by his friend falling forward .

I was behind a 4x4 today going up Umm Suqeim Road towards the Ranches. I could see three or four kids inside, all unrestrained. The van in front of the 4x4 braked suddenly, so the driver of the 4x4 had to brake too. I could see him or her stretch out an arm to stop the child bouncing around in the middle of the back seat from flying forwards into the front windscreen. Now, call me thick, but if you need your arm to restrain your child in this case, WHY DON'T YOU REALISE YOUR CHILD SHOULD BE RESTRAINED IN A CAR SEAT?!

Until the police start patrolling and issuing heavy fines and penalties to people it will never change. Very sad world we live in unfortunately Until the police actually have the power to...

Completely maddening isn't it? I get far angrier about Westerners not buckling up as they've (generally) had the education on safety and more campaigns in their home countries. https://www.facebook.com/BuckleUpInTheBack Yes, generally! However... My neighbour (here in Aus) took my daughter and I out in her 'people-mover' one day. Her youngest is still legally required to be in a car seat, which she is. But for that particular seat (same as my children have) she is WAY over the weight limit for the in-built 5 point harness...which she wears clipped around her waist only! Her other three girls sat with the lap-sash belt under their arms rather than over the shoulder!!! FFS. There is NO excuse here. Her husband is head of a local ER dept for goodness sake!!! Another friend here, recently arrived from South Africa does not have car seats (as legally required) for either of her children. Her three year old sits in the front seat! I have spoken to my neighbour (refused to get in the car on the day with the girls until they wore their belts correctly) but haven't approached the SA lady yet. I will when I see her next...I couldn't stand it if something happened and I hadn't spoken up. :( edited by Green-ish on 04/10/2011

Also I read in GN today that an Arab family narrowly escaped death because Dad was speeding in RAK near the creek and lost control. He, his wife and 16 month old child were ok but others have died there recently and there have been calls for barriers to be put up. How about STOP SPEEDING and having so little regard for others lives!!!

I pulled out of the school car park this morning to get on to the main road as a car was turning in and the child was in the back seat with her head out of the window enjoying her hair being blown all over whilst her daddy was speeding ! I was tempted to drive behind and give him a mouthfull about the dangers of this .. Im kicking myself now I should have... i remember back home in the UK a child down the road broke his neck sticking his head out of the car window and hitting it against a van that was overtaking !

I was nearly run over in springs this morning by a european lady who undertook the vehicles stopped at the predestrian crossing to let me cross. She didnt even have kids in the car jumping on her lap, but that cellphone call must have been urgent. Probably didn't think anyone would be walking in this heat!!!

You are completely right Redlesley. I don't think I was born but my parents were involved in a car accident 30 odd years ago. My brother who was sat in the back, but in the middle just leaning forward, ended up going straight through the windscreen and carried on down the road. Luckily for my brother and parents that due to his age he just bounced and didn't even break any bones. Around that time the law was getting tighter in the UK about wearing seatbelts. So for me I've always been brought up using my seatbelt. It's still very shocking when you see it in this day and age. But like you say they are so many years behind everyone else in many things, it's still shocks you.

I still can't get over seeing little kids crawl all over the car and around the driver while the car is moving in traffic! It makes me crazy! Where have these people been? Don't they read the news??? Redlesley is right - we all were the little kids crawling all over the car. I still remember getting a spanking because I kept jumping around the back seat. It's just that this region is 30+ years behind the west in terms of safety education.

A lot of it is lack of real education on the consequences on what could happen. I have grown up on the campaigns and adverts but I was also that child in the 70's standing behind my dad in the car. There is nothing shown to people over here on what could REALLY happen. It's by talking to people and getting them to understand - I presented to some Emirati women for example and they had no idea what a booster seat was - that's just the case - they haven't been educated on it.

Oh my goodness! That's in the same vein as the person who reported on here that she'd seen someone smoking a shisha when driving!!! It would be funny if it wasn't so dangerous!
