So finally me and my fiancé decided to go on a vacation this year in Christmas, starting 22nd Dec for 12 days.
We are doing Germany first, ideally Munich because it is close to Salzburg, Switzerland and the city I always wanted to visit Prague.

He would like to visit the other countries by train but I don’t know if this is doable or if it will be better to go and stay in different cities every 2, 3 days? I am concerned about the luggage as usually I pack lot of clothes with me specially that it is going to be freezing there.

My fiancé is not very excited about Prague and I don’t know how to convince him to stay there for 4 days at least :) He keeps telling me: Why Prague why Prague!!

Did you visit any of these countries? Any special tour you recommend? Places to visit? I heard that Prague is very nice and I keep imagining how beautiful is the city..

On the other hand, I am not excited at all about Germany and he is the one who chose Germany first. He lived in Europe before and he visited most of the European countries but I have been only to London and Ireland, I don’t know anything about the Shenghen countries.

Last time we went on a vacation together was 3 years ago to China so I am really excited about this trip and I need it very much.

P.S. Please dont give me suggestions to Sri lanka, etc.. I like cold countries and where there is a lot of Christmas celebration :)

We are staying at the Grand Bohemia, says its 5 star but will have to wait and see. There were lots of good reviews on Trip Advisor and Booking.com and the photos looked ok. Location is meant to be fabulous. Makes me excited just talking about it! You enjoy your holiday!

Hi, I second the Christmas Market in Nuernberg rather than Munich. Nuernberg is the most wonderful and beautiful Christmas Market in Germany....We drove from Munich to Nuernberg and it took about one and a half hours...About 170kms I think. If you want to go anywhere by train ( Deutsche Bahn) please book in advance as the tickets are usually cheaper by 50% and more. Also they always have adverts on german tv about Bahncard ( travelcard ) for Germany and Europe...May be worth to check it out... I find Berchtesgaden ( 100kms outside Munich and on the border to Salzburg ) wonderful and the most romantic place ever-especially if there is snow...The slopes, the lakes, the landscape all the old churches and so on...love it!!!!!!! Salzburg was wonderful too as is Vienna..Both cities offer horse drawn carridge rides-fantastic and don't get me started on all the wonderful cafees serving the most amazing cakes and hot chocolates...And the beers and mulled vine.....I am jealous... Can't say anything about Prague tho... Also check out websites like travelocity and www.hrs.de which always offer cheao deals on good hotels. We booked a family room in vienna including breakfast for 2 nights for just over 100 euros....Good luck and enjoy!!!!! I totally agree on Berchtesgarten, that and Konnigsee are my favorite places on earth.

Thanks KKS, We will visit Oberndorf if it is nice and worth the visit! Thanks for the recommendation ;) Div, yes NYE in Prague :) we celebrated together before NYE in London with all the crowd near the Big Ben. We were not in a fancy restaurant but on the street eating hot dogs and chips but it was amazing.. I love our photos from that night specially the one I am wearing a pink rabbit ear hat with the UK police.. it is hilarious! I am looking forward for the 2011 NY in Prague :D

Sabrina, thanks for sharing your feelings :) I can get you a souvenir from there :) Ladies, thank you very much for your replies, you were all very helpful. We are planning now to stay few days more so maybe we will be there for 15 days yeeeeey :) Looks like there are some good recommendations here for Prague, I think we will be in Salzburg in Christmas and in Prague for the New Year.. I think I will get a heart attack from Over Excitment before this trip looooool Gege-DXB thanks for noting the Railway issue for me, yes we will travel by train... I had a very funny experience last time we travelled by train from London to Scotland, everytime I am trying to look at the photos I have taken with my camera ot to close my eyes (for a quick nap), my fiance gets angry and asks me to look outside the window to see the beautiful nature.. I hope we dont have to take a 24 hours travel by train because with my fiance, I have to keep my eyes Wide Open outside the train windows :) :) Genkigirl, which hotel you booked in Prague? We are also looking at 5 stars.. I hope you too enjoy your holiday!! By the way, there is a website called agoda.com you will get the best prices for hotel accomodations. Booking.com is much higher.. I always book through agoda, after experience, they are the best!! <em>edited by JS on 15/11/2011</em>

Have booked to go to Prague at Christmas with our family of 5 through Dnata Holidays, flying Emirates, staying in 5 star hotel and private transfers. Can't wait and have specifically chosen there at Christmas to see the Christmas markets etc... Can't wait. Have also booked to see a Ballet at the National Theatre of Prague on Christmas night so should be fantastic. So excited!

I'm Bavarian but not a big fan of Munich while Christmas. I would prefer Nuernberg. Anyhow you will go to Salzburg and there the Atmosphere will be fantastic, same as in Nuernberg. If you will travel with the German Railway (Deutsche Bahn), make sure that you book in advance and try to make a seat reservations. The trains will be crowded, as usual. If you are lucking there will be some kinds of offers "Europa-Ticket", otherwise there are Country Tickets ("Laenderticket") which will be an good option. Wish you a great time and I'm sure that you will enjoy it. <em>edited by Gege_DXB on 15/11/2011</em>

Prague is gorgeous!!!! If he likes beer, I heard that Czech beer is better than German ;) The sights a very pretty, Prague Castle has a cool changing of the guard display at noon (boys usualyl liket hat stuff), food is good, town is nice, there's some interesting museums including torture museum, museum of communism and you can even do a tour of a nuclear bunker (he might like that?) also a sssssseeeecks museum which I didn't go to but apparently is quite interesting as to the history and customs about 'it' in different places and times in history. Nice parks but maybe not so much in winter... views from Petrin on the top of the hill and of course the afore-mentioned day trips as well. Very very walkable (but make sure your shoes are comfy as the cobblestones hurt!)

Loved Prague and Salzburg! I don't know much about Germany but if you do it first the Christmas markets will still be on and I heard Munich is quite nice. Have look at this for inspiration on Christmas markets: http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/planatrip/inspire-me/lists/top-christmas-markets You can easily go by train from Munich to other parts of Europe, try this website to help you www.seat61.com If you want to visit Switzerland as well you could go to St Moritz which is not far from Austria/Munich and should look very chrismassy in December. We were thinking of Prague for Easter. Do you have any hotel recommendations or areas that are most central. Have 3 teenage children so need at least 2 hotel rooms. Dont really want to do apartments this time so prefer roomy hotels that may have triple room thats not too squashy.

Prague is absolutely one of my most favourite holidays - it is very walkable, if you don't mind a few hills. There's lots to see, the food is fabulous and the prices were certainly right for hotels/food/drink. You can visit the castle/cathedral complex at the top of a fairly steep hill, but I kept stopping to take pictures over the river and Charles Bridge so managed to to it without becoming too breathless! There are river cruises as well as day trips outside the central "old town" area - the latter can be done on your own using public transport if you're so inclined. There is a wonderful concert hall, art, etc. etc. etc. The people were very nice and willing to give you information and guidance as well. If the BF is not keen, go for 3 days - he might change his mind once he's there and stay longer?
