if only kinokinuya were not in the Dubai Mall...
seriously. That place is just too big and too confusing and wherever I park is completely wrong for wherever I want to be.... and if I want to go to two different places they are as far apart as it is possible to be.... and generally I just don't go there. Will miss Magrudys DFC.
I imagine Magrudy is also a victim of their locations. Jumeira 1 isn't the epicenter of expat Dubai the way it was ten or even five years ago. Even though we live in Umm Suqeim we never go down there anymore. Festival City must be suffering from competition from Mirdiff City Center and the Dubai Mall.
But it's still probably Kinokinuya that's blwoing them out of the water. Not hard to see at all.
Magrudy's are expensive, and I was not impressed with the lack of customer service on my last trip to the Beach Rd store. I second Kinokuniya
I agree, Magrudys had the monopoly on books here for so long and were outrageously expensive, its only in the last few years since Borders & Kinokuniya have come into the picture they had to re-check their prices to be competitive, too late I guess.........
Wait a second, I went to DFC some days ago and the note on the door said there was a new location near Deira Clocktower. Or at least that's what I remember from the little map attached, but I didn't pay attention to the exact address since I'm only staying another ten days before I'm going back to Europe.
There is a new shop at their new headquarters at Al Ittihad Road - hardly convenient for most of us though and I'm so sorry to see another store go with the associated job losses. Magrudys was a great thriving business and I think it's sad that it's being run down when actually I strongly believe they could have still had a good business. The Jumeirah branch has only 1 shop now and the other 2 (used to be childrens and gifts) are still not occupied - silly when you realise the mall area there is ALL owned by Magrudys so it's not as though he was paying rent and had to close

Very very sad. Tells you a lot about the majority in dubai, huh? No book shop I'll ever compare to MAGRUDY's just the feel of the bookshop was enough. Bokksplus and borders and the rest are just sorry excuses for real book stores.
It is sad they are closing down. They have gone to a full circle . When we arrived in late 70 's they were in Jumeira near their present location on 2 levels with a wooden staircase to the upper level . We used to make the special trip from Sharjah for our Christmas shopping . C'est la vie
I loved Magrydy's. Used to stock up on books while visiting Dubai from our previous location. Apart from the one on beach road, which looks rather small from the outside, but I have never been in , are there any other decent bookstores here?
The best bookshop in Dubai in my opinion is Kinokuniya in Dubai Mall. I just love that bookshop. I can spend hours and a lot of money there.
Thanks - wow I am amazed as thought they always did really well.
It was just a lovely store with other good stuff too. I love Borders at MCC and also that Kinokuniya huge shop in Dubai Mall is brilliant, I guess that may have been one of their main competitors.
Oh well off to Jumeira I go, want to get some books on my camel club card to get my free one - hope they still do it !
Great, thanks! Will check Magrudy's Beach rd. out this week.
No more book shops in Festival City though. Too bad, it was their major attraction for me.
Oh noooo ! Apart of the books, they had plenty of good quality things there! :-(
Does that mean there is no more book shop in festival city?
Oopsiedaisy, the beach road branch looks small from out site but is actually quite big. The building you see is a 2 levels one, and you have 2 other more buildings in the back - if they kept them.

We had email from DS school to tell us Festival Centre shop no longer doing school uniform but I am not sure if that means the whole store closed?.......
