Having seen the recent forums on puppies I thought I should ask for your advice or recommendations.

I have 2 DDs and after years of asking for a dog we have finally decided that its not just a stage they are going through and decided a few weeks ago to start looking into this seriously. As this will be their first dog we feel that a rescue dog may not be the right way for us, although we have spoken to the lovely people at K9 friends about one of their dogs but they explained that the dog wouldn’t be suitable for us. This has now bought us back to looking at buying a maltese puppy. I have found that you can buy puppies at different pet shops and there are loads advertised on the internet but having read the forums about puppy farms and pet shops I don’t think this would be right for us. As this is such a big thing for our family I feel it really important that we get it right the first time.

Therefore my question is - do any of you know of any reputable maltese breeders here in Dubai or could recommend any breeders in the UK that we could start looking into.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Kristina_rmnv, Not sure if you received the e-mail I sent on 4th Dec? The puppies and mum look really happy in the foster home. We are happy to wait until mid Jan, but obviously if you have other pups who need to find homes first we would love to consider these. Could you please send me more details. Also weve had a look again at your facebook page and can see a beautiful pup on there called Ivy, could you please let me know if Ivy is still looking for a forever home. Many thanks. edited by wyddfa on 06/12/2011

Hi Greenish, Thanks for the details I've written them down and so you can remove them from the post if you like. Hi Kristina_rmnv, The girls love the pictures of the pups as well - although hard not to as the mum looks so proud. Could you please let me know how tall you think they may be when they are fully grown, looking at the mum she doesn't appear to be that tall (although hard to tell) which could be a perfect size for us. Thank you all again. Mom is just under knee height to me, im 1.60 cm. :D so she is not tall at all.

Thanks Green-ish again for your great advice. I will look into the dog trainers and dog behaviourist - is there anyone you would recommend? I will also speak to the girls again tonight about the puppies and saluki crosses. We do have friends that have salukis and they keep on jumping up on youngest daughter which worried her slightly, but I know all dogs are not the same. Thanks again. Oh puppies can be such little monkeys for jumping. It's REALLY easy to never let it start though, then you never have to correct the problem. Your friends are actually the problem, not the dogs. :D Before you actually have a dog, I'd recommend getting in touch with Verity. She's an animal behaviourist so (to my understanding) works more on the people than the dog. She LOVES dogs and will talk until she's blue in the face about everything you need to do to end up with a healthy, happy dog. You can contact V - cdotrosewarne1atbtinternetdotcom or (mob) 050 three one two four four two zero. Once you have your new family member, there are a few trainers around who come highly recommended on this forum. I've only seen Ange74 in action...and she's really great! Lots of EW members also say Neil at Homely Petz is brilliant. I have met his dogs and they certainly are a stellar example! I know there are others, but names escape me at the moment.

Kristina_rmnv, what can I say they are absolutely beautiful. In fact they look like Saluki crosses which is what Green-ish recommended. I have to go out now and will show your link to the girls after I pick them up from school. I can't thank you all enough for all your help and will contact you again later.

wyddfa...it warms my heart that you still have shelter dogs on the potentials list. :D Your best bet is to keep in touch with Kristina & all of the various groups and let them know what you are looking for. As you would have found with K9, their first priority is to find a home good enough for one of their dogs. ;) None of them will let you take home a dog that's not a perfect fit for you. Keep in mind that most of them have waiting lists of people looking for "small" dogs. With regard to breed...dogs are 'dogs' first. The little personality they grow up to have is almost completely dependent on the way they are raised. Especially with mixed-breeds, YOU will determine the temperament and behaviour of any dog that comes into your home. Sure when you first meet them you'll probably want to avoid the really nervous or shy ones and the hyper ones, but most pups are just ready to fit in and try to please you. Part of your homework with your girls could be to study and understand dog behaviour and training. If the humans get it right from the second a new dog walks into the home, the dog will almost always get it right. :D There are some great trainers and an awesome dog behaviourist in Dubai. Perhaps you could all meet with one of them in preparation for the arrival of your new family member? Any of the saluki crosses at the shelters are perfect!! They are friendly, happy, gentle, often knee-height-ish dogs that are perfect for the climate. Good luck!!

Hi Kristina_rmnv, Many thanks for your reply. I really do admire the work you all do and know that I wouldn't be emotionally stable enough to see the things you see. We are more than happy to look at puppy/dogs of mix breed but would like to know where possible what the mix breed is as this way my children and I can look into what type of dog it will be, the dogs needs and the best way to train the dog etc. The only thing we are sure of is that we don't want a big dog. Do you know what the mix breed of the puppies are as I'm sure we would be really interested in them. I look forward to your reply and thanks again.

Hi wyddfa, I knew you would take this in a wrong way, but from what you wrote i understood that K9 has decided that it is not suitable for your family to adopt a dog or THAT ONE dog, so i was only asking a question and hopping to understand, since you have explained afterwards, t is now clear. Please consider maybe any mixed breed, you will not find it easy to ADOPT a pure maltese pup here, if you only want a small puppy, im receiving a mother with her 8 babies this weekend, and they will be with me until all are ready for adoption (next 2-3 months), K9 has just helped us take the other few pups, 5-7 months old, so there are pups everywhere. Hope you make the right decision. Good Luck!!

Nomad, Thanks for your reply. The girls and I had a lengthy discussion about getting a dog again last night and we are still keeping an open mind on all options. We will still on a daily bases look at the k9 friends website and fingers crossed that a suitable puppy/dog comes up. I did take Kristina_rmvs comments to heart for numerous reasons and although I really admire the work people like her do, I was still shocked that someone could judge me and my family from how little they know of us, and to make their views so public - which was why I wanted to delete the post. Eldest DD loves dogs and has wanted a dog for as long as I can remember, every year this is the only thing she asks for at Xmas and Birthday but as a family the time was never right and I didn't feel it would be fair on the dog if we werent able to fully commit to it. We have had numerous tears when friends have had puppies and shes found it hard to understand why she wasn't able to. Both girls have adopted a puppy for the blind with their birthday money and have to pay into this every month, which they love the updates on the puppies progress. Plus we donate to Battersey Dogs home in London every month as well. Just because we don't have a dog doesn't mean we are not dog lovers. Girls are aware that this will take some time but we all believe its for the best that we get it right.

wyddfa, Please don't delet your post. As two very respected animal advocates( MC and Greenish ) have said it is a great teaching tool for others who may be looking for "Specific Breeds". Please don't take Kristina_rmv's post to heart. She is very much on the front line of animal rescue in Dubai.Believe me not an easy job and entirely on a volunteer basis. From a few of her posts on Puppy Farms, there are a large number of Puppy Farms in her own country. She has first hand knowledge of what goes on.I really believe it is not personal, merely a response to yet another thread about sourcing a particular breed puppy in Dubai ( please correct me if I am wrong Kristaina). Have you ever considered a puppy from K9.The folk there are really good at benig able to asses the eventual size of a "mixed breed" (Hienz 59 variety !!)by the size of the paws.I have a number of friends who have taken my advice gone down to K9 and are now the proud owners of small to medium sized mixed desert breeds. In fact when some have returned back home their dogs are considered special and different as they look salukish ( is that a word ? LOL ). All the best in your search and as MC said you sound like a lovely family who will give that special pup a wonderful forever life. edited by Nomad on 28/11/2011

It's a great educational thread with good info about how and why it's important for you (as a family) and for puppy (as a new family member). IMHO it would be a shame to delete it as it contains good information about how and why to go about selecting a new family member - the example being demonstrated helps others understand the importance of being careful. Good luck with puppy - hope you find a great dog - because your family sounds like a great family.

Hi Green-ish, Many thanks for your kind and informative reply. I have already explained to my girls that this is going to be a lengthy process and they have now read your reply which proves to them what I've explained. I can assure you that this won't be something we will rush into as were aware this is a big responsibility and something we have been looking at very seriously. We will continue researching the kennel club and see how things go from there. I was going to delete this thread now but couldn't see how to! Thanks again.

wyddfa...I have much respect for the thought you are putting into this. If only everyone would do the same! I am almost 100% opposed to the breeding of dogs for pets but, I do believe there are (few and far between) some ethical breeders out there. Finding a good one is going to be a long task. DO NOT buy a local puppy...I would guarantee it was bred purely for money and the breeders will have taken no steps to ensure they are breeding ethically. By ethically, amongst other things I mean ONLY for the betterment of the breed and not to some ridiculous show standard. An ethical breeder will only produce pups when they have exactly the right match of dog and b1tch and they will have waiting lists of pre-approved homes before even getting the b1tch pregnant. An ethical breeder will ask LOTS of questions about you; be very wary of selling a pup to people overseas; expect you to sign documents insisting of the return of the dog to them should you ever become unable or unwilling to care for it; probably insist on meeting your whole family...then they may agree to sell you a pup from a future planned litter. If someone has a pup they can sell you tomorrow and they don't want to put you through the hoops first, please don't buy from them. Don't become a supporter of the industry. It's probably best for you to start contacting breeders in your home country. Even via email you'll soon get a good feeling for their 'ethics'. Keep in mind, some breeders just have over-inflated egos and can be arrogant sods...does not mean they breed for the right reasons. When you find the right breeder for you, you can go on a wait list which sometimes requires a deposit to be paid. A pup will not be allowed to travel to the UAE until it's four months old so you will have time to make all arrangements for travel after the litter arrives. Even better if you can go 'home' and spend as much time as possible with the pup before travel then fly home with it. Good luck with your search.

Hi Marycatherine, Thanks for your reply. The maltese mix was one of the dogs we enquired about with K9. Weve been investigating different breeds for a long time which is why we finally decided on a maltese - DDs are now 10 and 11.

Is there any particular reason for choosing a Maltese? I don't know how old your DDs are but some small dogs are fairly "fragile" for lack of a better word and do better with older children. If you haven't already, I'd do some research on Maltese dogs in particular to make sure they're a good match with your children and lifestyle. I have seen some Maltese mixes available through K9 and other rescues but small dogs are very desirable and, as you've discovered, some are not suitable to be rehomed in some households because of trauma issues. Hope you find a good companion soon - good luck.

Hi Kristina_rmnv, Not sure how to take your reply as you sound angry and have jumped to the wrong conclusion. The K9 friends explained that the dog we asked about unfortunatley had gone to a foster home and was very traumatised hence why it wouldn't be suitable for a young family. Another 2 small dogs were also in a very similar situation and again they didn't recommend them either. Not at any stage did they suggest we weren't suitable to have a dog. This is something we really didn't rush into. I feel quite sad at the fact that this is the first post I've ever posted and this is the first reply I get.

Gggrrr, There might be a reason for K9 deciding that a dog is not suitable for you! Or is it just that ONE particular dog?
