So, I bought a cooker from a company in deira that advertises on Dubizzle. Ordered an electric fan oven, got it delivered no probs and then when I went to use it the next day, I discover it is gas!! They wont refund or exchange so am stuck with it, and have no gas at the mo.

The question is, I have 2 friends coming round for dinner tonight and I dont want to cancel on them, but only have 2 electric hobs. ARGH, please please please can someone give me some ideas of what to cook tonight??? Thanks :)

It'll take 5 minutes to get gas cylinders delivered and installed, unless your kitchen isn't set up for gas? Otherwise, if you have a microwave oven, have a look at casseroles online and fake it ;) really?! That must be the most efficient service in the UAE! ;) I think we just see a delivery van going down the street and call the number on the side and they come and deliver immediately :) Whoever we used the first time helped with the connection and voila :)

That must be the most efficient service in the UAE! ;) ------ Anyhow, loads of stuff you can do with only 2 hobs. Sausage hotpot (or chicken) - fry onions, peppers and meat until slightly browned, add stock cube, can tomatoes, water and rice/pasta. Boil. Serve! Fish in a creamy sauce - put rice to boil in one pan. In the frying pan, fry onions and mushrooms in some butter. When they're nicely browned, pop them in a bowl for later. Pope some more butter in the frying pan, fry fish, add a tub of cream cheese, some dill or parsley, salt and pepper. Let cheese melt, add the veg back in to simmer. Serve with the rice...

MAIN MEAL Boil some linguine or spaghetti in one pot. In the other, throw some anchovies in a fry pan and let them cook down a bit. You shouldn't need oil as they are quite oily themselves. Then add some nice juicy prawns (leave the tails on) and lightly cook. When the pasta is al dente, combine the prawns and pasta together. Add a big dollop of Lebanese garlic sauce (I think the Waitrose does the best supermarket version) and stir through. Throw in a tonne of baby spinach leaves, some halved cherry tomatoes, low-fat feta cheese and lots of cracked pepper. You can also add chorizo if you eat pork, but I would omit the anchovies to avoid it being too salty. DESSERT Chop up fruit like bananas, apples or peaches - your choice but just use one type of fruit. Heat up the frying pan and throw in some butter and brown sugar. When melted, add your fruit of choice and cook until the fruit is soft. You can serve it with chopped nuts and something crunchy like a waffle, or you can make pancakes and stuff the pancake with the fruit mix and roll it up. If you want to make extra butterscotch sauce, add brown sugar, butter together, and then add some light cream when it starts to cool and mix...

Cherrypip, on another note, if you bought an electric oven, and they sent a gas one, and now won't rectify their mistake, I'd say that's another case for the consumer line that's been promoted on here before.

How about a deliciously spicy green mango salad as starter; and a Thai curry (veggies & chicken) with rice (have rice cooker?) as a main course. Easy to prepare ahead, one pot needed.

Spaghetti bolognese (I know this is pasta but it never seems like pasta to me!) or chilli con carne and rice, served with a green salad and french bread.

Have you got a microwave ? If so, you could cook something beforehand and carefully reheat, which will leave you the two rings to use for others things. Maybe a chilli, goulash or chicken in a sauce, which can all be pre-cooked. I have insulated casserole dishes and they are great for when people come to dinner as they will keep food hot (or cold ! )for an hour or more, which means they can be on the table waiting while everyone has a pre-dinner drink.

Pasta? One hob for the sauce and one for the pasta? Can you use your oven? Or otherwise make a nice big salad with cooked french beans, cucumber, lettuce, fresh herbs, feta, grilled strips of chicken, tomatoes and anything else you might like, top with a creamy dressing and serve with crispy bread.
