I'm the type of person who never really looks well groomed no matter how much time I've spent on my appearance or how well I'm dressed (which most of the time is 'not very' :)). I was in Tiffany's in MoE a couple of years ago and was treated very courteously and given a lot of time, despite not looking rich. Given the service I received I was happy I did buy from them. Some higher end stores know how to select/train their staff.

I had the same experience at LV. Went to get my birthday present with my DH and DD. We were in jeans and T, just to be glanced as unwelcomed customers. I literally felt so small, didnt even look at a bag. Just left. I sometimes wonder whether these sales assistants think they are Mr or Mrs LV :)

i went in with my 2 gfs whom never been inside the boutique ever, so i took them in. but i never own any 1 piece of their products, anyhow, the 1st sales person was just so-so but the 2nd one was abit snotty... so i asked her to her face "are you unhappy today?"she got the message. i tend to ask these sales person straight to their face when they behave in such manner. if it is packed with other customers the better! i do this too. i have no qualms asking (loudly) "having a bad day love?"

May I just ask -- because I've never shopped in LV -- is having to queue to get in very common here? I've not queued at other high-end stores in Dubai which required this approach, so am interested to know. :)

This is what makes this forum so addictive! I also went into all the "designer" shops in Dubai Mall to look for a handbag as a very special treat from money received after my Mum's death. We are talking up to 13,000 aed. DH and I didn't dress up, just average weekend clothes but I don't know if that would have made such a big difference. However in just about every shop we were ignored until we started handling the bags and pulling out paper from them. Even then the assistants were very arrogant - DH was fuming. The only shop with a gracious assistant was Christian Dior but I did notice she was a trainee and the guy did motion her over when DH asked for assistance. I now do not want an expensive handbag, it's not worth it. A big sale (to me) was lost. Karama here I come!!!!

OP, I'm sorry to hear of the unpleasant experience you encountered at both of the LV stores in Dubai! I've bought a few LV products and has never had any 'awful' experience that said, the shop assitants aren't 'delightful' either...they were just OK! I've shopped at the LV store in Paris and I must comment how lovely and helpful the store assistant was. Had the most pleasant shopping experience and I will be making another trip before the year ends...:)

Someone mentioned the LV shop in paris being worse and that is so true, you have to queue for ages to get in and you are not allowed to touch the bags before the assistant shows them to you, like you can here. I've found the lv staff to be no worse than the staff at Zara who all swan around with their noses in the air. I can understand them not wanting someone to bring a stroller into the store and I don't think high end stores like that are in general a good place for children to be. There is expensive stock and when people are spending a lot on an item they want to be able to concentrate on the purchase and for some it could be a moment they've saved for ages for.

Have to add to the bad experience at LV. Went into the branch at Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi to buy a wallet for my DH. Sales assistants acted snotty, barely acknowledging, leaving me with a rack of men's wallets before walking away and I surely was not going to beg for their attention or knowledge, as it were. I did buy the wallet in the end and I mainly posted to say I did this in an abaya and burqa/niqab so don't assume that wearing one will get you any "respect". I did also have the audacity to shop there with nary a designer brand on my person. At least my husband liked the gift? Oh well. Last time I buy from them, though.

You should never judge a book by it's cover. My parents used to be good friends with a couple from Holland, the husband of which was a very rich antiques dealer. To look at him, you would have never guessed, as he was quite scruffy really. Not everyone feels the need to show off their wealth. I do know what you mean about Sales Assistants here though dealing with men and ladies in national dress; often they have overlooked me, who was first in line to be served, to deal with a person in an abaya or kandoura.... Well they ( shop ass) will do it as well because they know they will get **** if they don't bow and kow tow sale or no sale. Happens in ever restaurant - the table given is NEVER good enough, wander about, make a fuss, end up sitting back at the first table......:\:

It is in the interest of sales assistants to judge a book by it's cover, something learnt very quickly and in Dubai most covers are quite blatant.

What do you expect from a shop where you're paying to advertize their brand? ;) LV is so *out* now, especially here, it's like the pox, everyone has it! LOL

If you can afford such shops you will be served well, watch when a well dressed Arab goes in and see the difference in service. As for being upset about taking a stroller in when you have a nanny out with you sorry just can not see your point really. And how would a shop assistant know who can afford such shops? Just because someone is wearing an abaya or kandoura? You can get a beautiful tailor made kandoura for 400dhs, a nice shave for 20dhs and a fancy gutra for 100dhs...so just wearing Arabic clothing doesn't exactly denote massive wealth does it? Same goes for women slapped in make-up and 'Gucci' t-shirts. The richest family I know in the UK drive an old Volvo and a VW Golf, and to meet them you would have no idea what they 'have'. This is my point. In the US, they seem to 'get' this, and staff generally treat you well whether you look stereotypically wealthy or not...here you need a Lebanese special ski-slope nose, hair extensions and a huge amount of arrogance to even be acknowledged in lots of places. And FWIW, my mother who is glamorous to the point that I'm not sure we're related, was treated abominably in Harvey Nichols here, though she shops happily in the London store regularly. So even if you look well-kept and well-dressed, the staff retain their unjustified attitude problem. Ah well, the shops lose out don't they! What nationality are the *high end* shop staff? What nationality are the bigest spenders and what sort of service do they find acceptable? Obviously the high end shoppers do find the service acceptable otherwise it would change.

Mmm it really makes you feel like having a Julia Roberts moment "You work on commission, right? Big mistake. Huge! I have to go shopping now ...." :D Brilliant! This is exactly what I was thinking, only problem here is that I doubt they do get commission? You think the LV shopkeepers get 1000 dirhams a month like in every other shop? I wouldn't know! Maybe 2k per month?

Mots of them are up their own arses - they are sales assistants! No gripe with a sales assistant job - I did it for years when at school and Uni - only ones that think they are the bees knees because they stand about in a black trouser suit all day! Tee hee. Reading this thread, all I can picture is Edina [Monsoon, from 'Absolutely Fabulous''> after a snooty art gallery assistant looked down her nose at her, and Edina was there to spend 'thousands and thousands of pounds'. Edina just looked her up and down and said: "You only work in a shop; you can drop the attitude" and stalked off with her head held high. :D
