Ladies, I need your help! We have been asked at work to bring in a traditional dish from our home countries and I am struggling to think of what to take. The traditional dishes that I keep thinking of are not going to work, ie, how can I take fish and chips, Yorkshire puds etc. It's got to be something that can be served cold or just warmed in a microwave, although I see this being a nightmare if everyones dish needs to be warmed up! Also I will not have much time the evening before to cook so I am looking for something really easy or even better something I can order and take into work with me. Any help would be much appreciated TIA

Park and shop do the most delicious scones - so get on the phone and order those. Pop into Spinneys and pick up a jar of Bonne Maman strawberry jam and then go to the chiller section and pick up some pots of the fresh double cream - it's really thick and goes beautifully on scones. (it's in little blue and white pots) It doesn't get more English than that and, as you're pushed for time, you'll be able to get it all done quickly. I would also take in a dish of butter - I like scones with butter, jam AND cream! The thing that I would do for International day at school was to bake a whole load of little sponge cakes (cup cakes) split them in half, spread them with strawberry jam and sprinkle them with caster sugar - miniature victoria sponges - they were super easy and were always eaten in a flash. Also - they were Queen Victoria's favourite cake - so a bit of history too! Would love to see what other dishes are brought in by everyone - what a great idea. edited by Clairehdp on 31/10/2011 Double cream?

I love the idea of cucumber sandwiches, especially with the crusts cust off! But if you want a sweet dish I would go with the scones, very easy to make and very British! You could put chopped dates in instead of sultanas and supply proper butter, jam and cream to go with them, yumyum! butter and cream? To give everyone a choice haha, didn't mean to put them all on at the same time, should have explained a little better! :D I love them with just butter on but DH likes cream and strawberry jam...

I don't get the butter and cream thing, for me it's one or the other and when we are talking scones it has to be strawberry jam and clotted cream x for scones, we like... cheese with butter, or sultana with butter, or plain with clotted cream and rarsperry jam

I would make a batch of mince pies ! Its not long to go until Christmas and My hubby took them in to work and a lot of the indian co workers loved them ! mince pies originate from the ME - were brought back to the UK by the crusaders ;) ah see bit of history too !

Eccles cakes Cornish pasties Victoria sponge Sausage rolls (they're English right?) Jam tarts Lemon curd (could do it in tart form) Crumpets (surprisingly easy to make!) Cherry cake I would probably do pasties, as they're a taiditional workers' food which would have been carried in lunchboxes by the workmen (and still are!), so kind of relevant for a work do. Really easy to make and you can do them veggie or meat (not traditional but who cares). Plus they're YUMMY yes, good shout. I would go with the pasties an' all crumpets however, are truly repulsive

I saw mincemeat in Spinneys just this morning - use this recipe, it's really quick, easy and you can pretend you made everything from scratch, like the mother at the beginning of "I Don't Know How She Does It" (book, haven't seen the film) :D It's Anthony Worral-Thompson's recipe, easy as - erme - pies ;) http://uktv.co.uk/food/recipe/aid/512388

Oooooh also bread and butter pudding! Do Delia's chocolate one sans alcohol - it's divine, and is excellent eaten cold too. Just take some cream to go with it :) Spotted dick? Very traditional!

Tripe!? Thats the second dish that you have suggested that I don't know! If it should be trifle, that's a good idea but I always follow my Grandma's recipe and that involves a drop of sherry so probably not appropriate for work, but then again.........

shortbread ?? (or too Scottish... lol) individual apple pies and cheat with Ambrosia custard !! or individual rice puddings (can be eaten cold)... and a cuppa !! edited by Sue62 on 30/10/2011 We only have to take one dish, I guess the idea is everyone will just try a bit but I would love to take a box of Yorkshire Tea and make everyone a brew! Not sure the boss would appreciate that effort though.

Thank you ladies for your ideas, I am thinking deserts maybe the answer. I know some people are vegetarian and such a mixture of cultures I am stressing about it!
