My DS, 6 yrs, has been asking about getting her ears pierced. I told her how painful it was and she kind of backed off - I figured this was the best strategy for the moment. But I know she will ask again...I have seen babies and very young girls with earrings and kind of freaked. What age is appropriate? I know this is subjective....but would like some input...

DD got hers at 4 months. Her father was insisting for this as it is part of his culture. My mother has always forbidden this practice (I had to wait the majority age - 18); I remember begging her all these years and asking this as a birthday gift every year. Therefore; I had no pb to pierce my DD's ones at young age and truthfully, she looks fabulous and had no pb of infection so far.

...3 days old? With a nurse, done while sleeping, not even a flint.

I got my dd pierced at 6 months. The timing was right for us. She cried but got to face that music at any age and younger the better. Good thing though, she was too young to pull them out. I kept cleaning her ears to avoid the risk of infection. Medically there is no reason to wait post 3 months so boils down to your confidence and comfort levels and availability of the right practitioner and equipment (gun vs needle etc) Toddler age I reckon would be tough as they touch everything and therefore more susceptible to infection.

my 8 year old has just been asking about having her ears pierced...i had to wait until i was 11, so i told her that is when she can have them done, but reading this, not sure whether i'm being a bit mean...! My nearly-4 year old DD asked if she could have holes in her ears so I replied "sure, when you're a mummy". She seemed fine with that, combined with a pair of very sparkly clip-on earrings!

My mum made me wait til I was 16 - I went on my bday and spent my birthday money on the piercing and earrings :) For my daughters the oldest 3 had their ears pierced at 2 in Australia and the youngest as a baby - we were living here and advised to have it done early ! All 4 never had any problems and as they were young I cleaned them each day til they healed - not one has said they wished they hadn't had their ears pierced - oldest 3 are in their 20's and youngest is 11

My mums favourite expression was "if God wanted you to have holes in your ears you would have been born with them". I had to wait till I was 15.... Lol...that's what my Dad always said. He made a deal with me and said he'd never pay for it so I had to wait until I had finished school and could pay for it myself. I was almost 17 when I had mine done. If my daughters want theirs done, they can when they are old enough to make an informed decision. Another glib comment made by my non swimming DH " If we were meant to swim we'd have gills and webbed feet" !!

In my view at least age 12. I remember an incident at school when I was 6 or 7 where a child got their finger stuck in another girls gold hoop earring while playing in the playground and it ripped right through her earlobe. Lots of blood, a hospital trip and she had a slit through her earlobe after. Until they have grown out of playing/climbing etc I think it's not safe. Also they need to be old enough to care for it, they can get nasty infections when healing. I was desperate to have mine done when I was 12, my Mum said I couldn't till I saved to have it done myself AND had enough to buy a decent pair of gold earrings to wear after the surgical studs were out (she admitted after that she didnt think I'd stick at the saving up!) It's took me weeks of chores and car washing, but got there in the end and remember how delighted I was to get them done - a lesson also in working for what you want in life ;)

Our friends' daughter was about 11 or 12 and one of them turned septic and she had an awful time.. Part of it was due to neglect and just not knowing how important the after-care was. Personally I don't like seeing children with pierced ears, apart from when it's for cultural reasons. I was 18 or 19 when I had mine done and I'm not convinced children are capable of all the faffing not to mention the safety aspect. But having said that obviously it's up to the parents if they want them done. If I had a daughter I would put the permission off for as long as I could..

What u want and would like when your 8 is not what u want when your 11 ... I think it's right wait until they can pay for it themselves so it's there decision and their responsibility to look after and clean them. Everyone is different and has different opinions it's up to the parents to make the right decision for their child.

My DD was 15 before I let her have pierced ears. Personally I hate to see babies and tiny tots with earrings in but I am aware that it is cultural in many areas. I was in my 30s before I had mine done as I wasn't allowed to wear earrings in my early nursing days so waited until I was on long term maternity leave! definitely a cultural thing in india... in fact in some states they even have a religious ceremony surrounding it! :) which explains why GOLD is such a popular thing for us!!! we have so many areas of our body that we can adorn with it! :)

I won't pierce my daughters's ears until they are old enough to have it done at a professional piercing parlour using sterile needles instead of a gun. Many places will use a gun, and piercing guns are unsanitary. They can't be cleaned properly because they cannot be taken apart, so whatever germs/nastiness might have been acquired by going through the previous girl's ears will still be there when your daughter's ears are pierced.

My GD, aged 8, had hers done a few months ago at their GP clinic. She was very brave about it - until she had the first one pierced !! Maybe she doesn't have a very high pain threshold but was very upset after the first one, even though a cream was applied some time before. Didn't want to have the second one done but obviously had to. An hour or so later the experience was forgotten and she was very proud of her new earrings. I can remember having mine done (I was in my thirties) and I found it pretty painful and I do have quite a high pain threshold. We tend to forget pain with the passing of time - a bit like childbirth !!

my own ears were pierced first when i was 3 months old and i don't remember a thing... I don't think anyone remembers anything much from when they're 3 months old - good or bad - so it's academic to advise doing it early on those grounds. I don't remember anything much of having them done at 11. It's a human trait that no-one can actually remember pain, as in the sensation. Think about being happy and you generally feel happy, think about pain and you won't be in pain. edited by Hello.Again.Kitty on 20/07/2011

Aged 11 - as a rite of passage pre going to "big school" and being more grown up. Can't remember it hurting at all - just remember being hugely impatient to get the ginormous big gold studs out and some fancy ones in!

my DD's ears got pierced when she was 6months old... very common practice in india... the reason we do this is because that's the age when they experience the least pain as the flesh around the ears are very soft... this flesh thickens as u grow older and hence the pain factor increases... another reason they do it when the kids are really young is that they soon forget about the pain... my own ears were pierced first when i was 3 months old and i don't remember a thing... and my second piercing was more for vanity and when i was 10 and i still remember every second of it! :) since ur DD is 6yrs old... my only suggestion would be to apply some EMLA (numbing cream) around 45 minutes before u'll get the ears pierced so that it is 'virtually painless' :) all the best... imo go to a clinic to get it done and preferably use the medicated or then gold earrings to avoid any sort of allergic reactions! :)

My daughter is your typical 6 yr old princess - has to have matching shoes, clothes etc. Loves dresses (no shorts/pants please...). So the earrings are to 'finish her look'. She has these stick on ones and get's frustrated that they keep falling off and losing them. I remember the burning feeling, but have to admit that my friends did mine with a safety pin.. at school... My niece I think she was around 6 or 7yrs, had hers done and they had 2 ladies do them at exactly the same time on each ear. I thought that was a great idea! She could not back out for the 2nd that way...

I had mine done when I was three, remember the gun shot but not the pain. I got them because I kept begging.

I had mine done when I was 11 - again, my mum resisted until she judged I was old enough to make a reasoned decision for myself, for the right reasons... and save my pocket-money for it! She doesn't have pierced ears. It might be worth gently asking her why she wants it done. Peer pressure is one thing, but if she answers anything like "because it will make me prettier", then have a gentle chat about not needing to alter your body in order to be wonderful and delay for a bit! It doesn't really hurt though, even at an older age... certainly no more than a vaccination, if I remember rightly. It's the aftercare that's a bit onerous. Oh, and only studs or sleepers for school!

I got mine done at 14, i wanted them done sooner but my mother said i had to wait until i was old enough to properly take care of them as well...i was so happy once i got them done! i would wait if i were you, your DD will have plenty of time in her life for all that!! Me too, well Mom would only let me have them done when I was 12, but they went all yucky so just let them close, had them redone at 20 and never regreted it since!

I think my problem is that I don't know what to think! But it appears from all of the posters that perhaps from 7yrs onwards would be ideal, if SHE wants it. She is quite responsible, and I would be on her back for sure....Thanks all!
