So today I bought a small suitcase to take as hand luggage on the airplane. I get home and it turns out there are no keys to the suitcase. Phoned the shop and they told me to come in with the suitcase and then they will give me a new one.

Now the problem is that for me to go there and back will cost about 100dh in taxi fees (as I don't drive). Should I ask to be compensated for this? The guy on the phone told me that it was his fault and he should have checked (after telling me it was a number lock... I think I would have noticed!). I'm not very assertive in this way normally but really feel that they should at least offer me something. I know that if I just go there without saying anything and they will not offer any compensation and that I will be ticked off. What should I do?

TIA.

I had some money stolen from my bag under the seat in front of me on a flight a few months ago while I went to the toilet and to stretch my legs. ANother one learned the hard way :(

I agree that nowadays that it is probably a moot point to lock your check-in bags as anyone (legal or otherwise) with the intention to break into your luggage will find a way and it is very easy according to this video http://kipkay.com/videos/just-for-fun/is-your-luggage-safe-from-airport-security/ However, I would be more worry about people putting things into my luggage and having a padlock there will at least deter the opportunistic offenders to a certain extend and for my peace of mind. I had things stolen from my locked bags (opened by customs according to the notifications) a few times while traveling through south east Asia. We generally lock our cabin bag too especially during a night flight. A long time ago, another passenger went though my bag under the seat while I was in the loo, so lesson learned :)

Take a hacksaw to it then buy a combination lock; I had to do this when my case was examined coming out of the US and US customs had put a completely different lock on it! Surprised at the number of people who don't lock their checked in baggage; I though it was just me!

Thanks for the idea's. A padlock isn't and option as there is nothing to secure it to. I usually don't lock hand luggage unless I am travelling to Africa which is the case this week. Also it's about the principle. If I want to I should be able to lock it. I am going to phone them and ask to speak to the manager and present two options: a. deliver a new suitcase to me. b. compensate me for my taxi costs. Apparently it is not an option to just send/give keys because if they were not in the suitcase they don't know where they are. There isn't a branch closer by. Their only branch is in Dubai Mall. Will keep you posted.

I thought that the OP could not open the suitcase, but probably was wrong! Agree that the store should courier the key to the OP.

I've had things stolen from my checked-in luggage many times. Always when travelling to, from or in Africa. And it is not random breaking ins - they know exactly what they are looking for. Once the bags are scanned they know what is in the bag and can target a specific bag. Popular things are branded sport shoes, jewelry and other branded items. I even had my perfume taken from my vanity bag. They just break the zips, so locks won't help. The only thing which seems to deter them is the plastic wrapping. Have you ever noticed that most bags coming in from Africa are plastic wrapped? Regarding the missing key: you have 3 options: Go back for the key, try to convince them to bring it, or buy a padlock. Decide which one is the least trouble and go with it.

Almost all retail companies here have a van and a driver for moving stock between shops and moving employees around. Demand that they put the key in the van and deliver it to you. Its not your fault, and I dont think you should have to go back. If they say AR is too far (which it might be) maybe you could come to a compromise, like your or your husbands office. I dont lock my suitcases either, I have never had anything taken. I do quite often wrap them up in plastic at the airport when I arrive. But anyway its not about locking or not, its about the OP not getting what she paid for.

Like the previous poster, have never locked checked or hand luggage. The former because security always has the option of breaking into your bag in any event, locks are pretty much useless anyways if a professional criminal has access to it and most are soft sided - a pocket knife gets access. As for hand luggage, it's never out of my sight anyways - and if it needs to be checked - see the first 3 reasons.

In over 20+ years of travelling have never ever locked either checked baggage or hand baggage. Any valuables (such as jewellery etc) stays in my handbag or DH carries cameras etc in his hand baggage. Never had any problems or theft (fingers crossed etc for future travel). All our luggage, anyway, is of the canvas type so it would be so very easy to use a craft knife or whatever to get into it so we've never seen any point in locking it. And I'm guessing that if anyone airside has ever bothered to look at what's inside our bags (jeans, polo shirts mainly) they've decided that there's not much point in taking it anyway. And on the return journey ... well, it's all due to go into the washing machine anyway lol!

Do you have other suitcase keys to try in the lock? -those kinds of locks are often interchangeable anyway-and hardly secure-otherwise cut the existing lock off and buy another lock and key set edited by wuffles on 07/08/2011

Hmm...how about suggesting that they mail the key to you - at their cost? Seems like a simple and affordable solution....

Why are you bothering to lock your hand luggage? It shouldn't be out of your sight at any time. I never lock any suitcases anytime, think if someone wants to steal something that bad they will just slash the thing anyway. And I've never lost anything, touch wood. It's the principle....if you buy something with a feature, you should expect to be able to use it.... I like Saharasypsyrose's idea of having them deliver it.... otherwise, is there another branch closer?? Yes good point

Yikes! What a hassle. I would probably first mention the additional cost of transport to get an exchange from him and then suggest that it may be best for him to have someone delivered a new one to your house so that he won't need to compensate you for the transportation cost and see where that gets you? In this case, it will save you both time and money? Not sure if it will fly, but worth a try? Hope you get it sorted out to your satisfaction! :)

No I live in AR and need to go to Dubai Mall. I don't think there is bus that can take me there without having to change over a lot which in this heat I don't want to do, also I just want to run in and out. Anyway I have to agree with you, my chances are slim. However I think I am going to point out the extra costs to them. This at least will give me the feeling that I've done something rather then just smile politely and say: 'It's okay'. Sorry-live out the other side of Dubai so can't advise on bus routes-the bus to the mall does connect to the metro though-have you checked if the store has a branch closer to you?

Sadly I don't like your chances of compensation-what a nuisance for you-any chance you can take a bus or train part way at least so it isn't such an expensive exercise for you?
