Dear Ladies

I am due in April 2012 and currently registered with Dr. Ghada Khalil who only delivers at American Hospital. Recently I am hearing mixed review about American. Can you all please help and recommend. Has anyone delivered at City? I have read previous forums and continue to get confused. So, I am getting double minded. Any reviews on Dr Ghada will be appreciated too.

Thanks alot.

Hi ladies. I was booked in to have a Csection at City this coming Monday, but bizarrelly City cancelled it saying they are too busy so now I am going to American instead. Having read all this feedback about AH I am now very worried. Did those of you who delivered there have explicit birthplans that were ignored, or do you think that might make a difference? Would really appreciate any tips for how to make the best of it as at this point I have no other options open to me. Thanks. I have had both C-Section and VBAC at American Hospital and found it a very good hospital all around both times. Post-delivery, the nurses were all fine (not great but got the job done), except one fumbling idiot. She was removing my C-section stitches as if trying to maximize the discomfort/pain and take as long as possible doing it. She was making my husband cringe too. I requested a different nurse to come to do the stitches removal and they sent a doctor with a spray that numbed the very top layer of skin so it was not uncomfortable at all. I was satisfied that they were quick to make adjustments for me. The facilities are perfect and spacious and I also thought the food was pretty good. And regarding taking your baby to the nursery, they always asked me if I wanted the baby in my room or at the nursery and if she was in the nursery, they brought her back after 2 hours to breastfeed. They were very good about that. But I did tell them that formula was out of the question. There was no written birth plan. Just my verbal messages, but I was very happy with the overall experience. My husband stayed with me the whole time I was in the hospital both visits, and he slept on the sofa. Maybe his presence made them less worried that I'd be too tired to take care of the baby on my own and didn't whisk her away for that reason? Wish you a happy and easy delivery.

I was informed that recently City were not accepting women in labour at less than 38 weeks as there was a lack of space in the NICU so this may be why they have cancelled your C-Section Andrea :( Yes, after speaking to my doctor it seems the NICU at City is full so they are not accepting any high risk deliveries. Still frustrating but at least there is a reason. My doctor also said the facilities at Al Zahra are excellent and it is a great location for new Dubai so if I had more time I'd look into it too. Good luck. Good luck to you too Andrea! Where are you now delivering? Who is your doctor? (Am hoping he/she is not the same as mine, then there are recommendations from 2 medical professionals ;0)) I'm off to see Al Zahra this evening....

I am sorry to say but this does NOT make any sense. Who is your doctor at City? She/he needs to explain to you why this has happened and also give you a new date depending on the reason you are having a C-section. I imagine this must be an incredibly frustrating experience. FYI, my birth plan at American was respected to the last letter. Just make sure you explain it again to the midwife, and make sure hubby stays with the program as well. Thanks KenzaB. So perhaps if I put in the birthplan that postpartum, the baby should never leave my side and not be fed by anybody other than me, they will respect that too? Here's hoping. I know it makes NO sense at all. My doctor isn't a City Hospital Dr but from another clinic, so I can only speculate that they give preference to their own doctors and patients but even so, it is crazy. The trouble is that my doctor is travelling on Wednesday, so perhaps they did offer another date which she couldn't do. My csection isnt really a real urgent emergency but it needs to happen this week, so my back is against the wall and I am feeling slightly panicked. Yes, as you can read from my post below I have a very mixed review on American Hospital. Delivery excellent. Post partum care not impressed. As one of the other ladies pointed out, just make sure that baby stays with you as they whisk her out of the room constantly and sometimes it happens when you have fallen asleep. You wake up and baby is gone, it is quite unnerving. Including their attitude versus bottle feeding, they dont see the harm of giving a newborn formula and I am not saying this is bad, it was just NOT what I wanted for MY baby.

Apparently their facilities are excellent. There current staff to patient ratio is low so you will get a lot of care and unlike City they have wireless monitoring so you can move around the room freely. (American have wireless monitoring too). Have heard mention that they will be doing water births too...? I had my 1st baby at City and was disappointed with my midwife - wasn't in the room much, gave no advice on different positions, when I was asking for gas and air at 7cm told me it was too early(!)....but I have heard great things about City from other friends who have delivered there so i think I was maybe unlucky. I found the facilities good at City though and would be happy to have my second baby there but I have ensured this time I have better support through my labour.

i delivered my son at city last year and you are correct. in fact, they insisted he sleeps on my chest for comfort, warmth and ease when breastfeeding. when he had to be checked for something they did it right next to my bed. the only time he left the room was for his first bath - and we went with the nurse so she could show us how to do it LOL the only thing that i missed out on was the lactation consultant. by the time we were in our room, she had left for the day and there wasnt any back-up consultant. and she didnt come to the hospital on the friday. i had to get a lactation consultant to do home visits - well worth it! good luck x If I had the option, I'd go to City for this approach alone, it is SO much more mummy and baby friendly. At American they did a couple of in room checks but my baby normally had to go to the nursery for checks. Our room was quite a distance from the nursery so each time they took him I'd have to first insist to the nurse that yes, I was coming too and no she wasn't to take him without me and her saying he would be fine was beside the point. I'd then have to rush to get my dressing gown on while telling her to please WAIT while she kept insisting 'it's fine'. Erm, no, it's not. Then I'd have to shuffle down the corridor and wait outside the nursery peering through the gaps in the blinds to watch as he got lined up with all the other screaming babies to wait his turn. It was never quick and I'd invariably get dizzy (c-section coupled with low blood pressure) so would end up kneeling on the floor trying not to faint. Once a porter took pity on me and got me a chair. When he finally came out it would be back down the corridor with the nurse looking bemused. I ended up going home a day early against my obstetricians advice as being in the hospital was just too much effort!

When I confronted them they actually refused to admit it, when I called the management and made a big deal they finally admit that every time they took my son away they bottle fed him. Explained a lot to why he refused to breastfeed, he just wasnt hungry. Goodness KenzaB, that is utterly atrocious, I would have been absolutely livid. Beyond livid in fact. Awful that you went through that. I've heard a few stories along those lines which is why I've never let any of my babies out of my sight in the hospital. Along with instructions in chart that my baby is not to be taken from my room without me going too. Which didn't stop me waking one night to find a nurse walking out the door with my baby. I hit the roof. I found the 'we know best' attitude of some of the nurses appalling. I'm under dr Anne at city hospital so far so good I had the tour of the postnatal and labour ward all is well looks very smart and clean. I written up my birth plan which states baby is not to be taken from me at any point. I was reassured this will not happen . City. Hospital no longer have a nursery the baby stays with you at all times :-) they have a lactation consultant and also a group to attend during the week for extra support. I'm due to deliver my third baby first in the UAE in June. I hope my info helps. You can take a tour every Friday at 11am and 4pm sharp. i delivered my son at city last year and you are correct. in fact, they insisted he sleeps on my chest for comfort, warmth and ease when breastfeeding. when he had to be checked for something they did it right next to my bed. the only time he left the room was for his first bath - and we went with the nurse so she could show us how to do it LOL the only thing that i missed out on was the lactation consultant. by the time we were in our room, she had left for the day and there wasnt any back-up consultant. and she didnt come to the hospital on the friday. i had to get a lactation consultant to do home visits - well worth it! good luck x

I had my twins at American Hospital 3 weeks ago. The staff were excellent. The babies were preemie and spent time in NICU. The neonatologist Dr Sridhar was excellent as were the nursing staff in NICU headed up by Melissa. The lactation consultant Naz was an amazing help to me. These are my first babies so I've never experienced any other hospitals in Dubai but would recommend American without a doubt

Hi KenzaB Just want to add - I had to beg for someone to show me how to breast feed and when they sent the lactation consultant she was very brief and said she would be back. It was not until I made a fuss on our last day she came (not her fault) but the excuse was they were short staffed. This was one of many issues I had with the nursing staff. I passed on this feedback to the Director of Nursing & suggested they needed to get back to basics using a checklist? to make sure all mothers are showed or reminded of how to do certain things such as breast/bottle feeding, bathing, nappy changing and so forth especially first time mums. This was one of many unfortunate things I experienced as I expected so much more from a hospital such as the American. edited by Anissa11 on 24/04/2013 edited by Anissa11 on 30/04/2013

I delivered at American 3 years ago, the delivery itself went perfect. The midwives are amazing, the maternity ward very spacious and modern. The anaesthesist was a very funny guy who put me at ease and after 12 hours of labor the epidural was a heavenly experience. Now, the negative. There was no lactation consultant present when I delivered and some of the nurses were good but majority were rude and hurt both me and baby who wasnt latching on. Not only that, but even though I specifically told them to NOT give him a bottle of formula, I found out they still did that behind my back. I found out because even though he didnt have a feed due to his bad latch, his blood sugar levels were quite high and when I asked the paediatrician how that was possible he said, well if you havent been able to breastfeed him for the last few hours than the only other solution is they gave him a bottle. When I confronted them they actually refused to admit it, when I called the management and made a big deal they finally admit that every time they took my son away they bottle fed him. Explained a lot to why he refused to breastfeed, he just wasnt hungry.

The City hospital over the American Hospital hands down. I regret not booking the City Hospital and had my baby at the American as a friend referred me there who had her baby 2 years ago. The American has fantastic facilities and my obst was fabulous. However I found some of the nursing staff in the mat ward lacked basic listening skills and at times a duty of care (we nearly lost our baby as a result). I complained to senior management and it took them months to follow up my complaint. Do your research and undertake the tours before you book.

I delivered at City last month and honestly speaking, could not speak highly enough of them. My doctor was not based at City but the nursing care etc was top notch. Nurses were very friendly and competent with a very good bed manner. I know ppl have different experiences but mine at City really was excellent!

I had my premature baby at City and they were amazing. I can't compare the hospitals as I never went to the American or even considered it... City Hospital and the NICU were amazing. I heard of some people being sent to City with there Prem's... worth considering. But be warned, think there is a general feeling of 'pro' c-section... My cousin gave birth at Medcare and although she was happy with it. I wasn't... totally pleased with my choice.

I have delivered at American and most recently City hospital and have to say City wins hands down. Yes American is plusher and its labour room is about 4 times the size of city's BUT it depends if you want a nice room and rubbish staff that never give you any information about anything OR you want a proper hospital with caring, helpful staff who keep you fully informed. The food is also a lot better at City and husbands get a proper fold out sofa bed. I also found they provided a lot more in terms of nappies, wipes, toiletries etc. I found the staff really helpful and informative (bar a couple of nurses on the night shift)

I went to the American Hospital at first. Later, I met a lady that told me her experience, and I simply changed to City. My friend delivered in American. She said the nurses are bad! Good luck!

Yeah the ER can be hit and miss but that's completely separate to the maternity ward. We've been at the outpatients clinic having the LO checked and the paediatrician had to run across to the other building for an emergency c-section! She was only gone for 10mins - impressive!!! Mnadir, if you have any other questions, let me know. I'd be happy to help!

We had a horrendous experience at American Hospital just last week. At 2am DS became very sick (continuous projectile vomiting, fever and very loose stools). We travelled from Marina all the way to American Hospital and they just looked at us with a blank face like we were aliens and told us there wasn't a pediatrician to see our son. Shocked. Luckily City Hospital across the road had a totally different attitude and set up.

Dear ladies Thanks for your feedback. I feel much calmer now and will just stick to my OB and American Hosp. Giggles - your reply makes me feel specially better since we have the same doc. It is our first baby and since most of us are expats here its so much better to hear from people with similar situations. Inshallah everything will be fine :) Thanks alot ladies.... highly appreciate!

I delivered at American Hospital a few months ago and had a great experience. The labour room is very spacious (unlike the one at City Hospital, which felt a bit claustrophobic). I was lucky to be admitted on a quiet day and so had 2 midwives looking after me all day. They took great care at following my birth plan and I just felt very comfortable throughout (10 hours labour in total). After birth, the nurses were fantastic and were readily available whenever we needed them. Overall, I felt really spoilt and would definitely recommend AH!

mnadir, I would suggest you to take a maternity tour of both the places before you make up your mind. City does one at 11 and one at 4 every Friday. Do call American and find out their timings. They show you the facilities (labor room, antenatal room, etc.) and answer any questions you have. It's worth taking a walk and making up your mind after that. Goodluck!

Kaba, I am scheduled to deliver at City Hospital in Dec. Your post does concern me a little as this is going to be my first baby. Did the midwives not offer you pain medication from time to time? Who was your doctor? I would definitely like to know more about your experiences. Thanks a lot.
