Im looking for a new car seat as my LO is very tall and has already grown out of his Maxi Cosi capsule at 6 months.

Also we have a Graco high chair that was 700dhs which I find very heavy and doesnt have wheels to move, so my mum really struggles with it. Also I find the straps a pain to clean, so we want to get a new one.

Any ideas on things to look out for on tips on what to get when buying a high chair or Car seat Id really appreciate it before we fork out again on something we'll be unhappy with.

Thanks :)

I think bumbos, jolly jumpers, walkers and the like are a BAD idea. They may make it easier to entertain a child who's showing frustration because they want to sit/walk/jump, but there is a physiological reason why they can't do those things at that point...their bodies are not ready. Just going off on your tangent too... those sit-in walkers are actually "not recommended" in the UK (Official Red Book) - apparently, they cause the most infant accidents! Plus, extended use can affect how the baby's pelvis develops and they are often not adjusted properly - babies should have their feet flat on the floor, even for the door bouncers and whatnot... and even then, "extended use" is something silly like "more than 10 minutes"...

I always used one of those booster seats that attach onto your own dining chairs for a high chair (got one for sale at the moment, in fact! ;) ) which are great and easy to clean. Try not to get one of those huge padded high-chairs because they are impossible to clean properly and become really quite rank after a few months. The Ikea ones are fine, but if your child likes to arch its back, go for one with a higher back - the Ikea ones are on the low side and I know a friend whose son backflipped out of one in a cafe where they had them! Car-seats, my health visitor rightly said that it's easier to fix broken legs than a broken head, so keep your baby in the capsule preferably until he reaches the weight limit, even if his legs stick out. Move him on to a bigger seat when his head sticks out over the top edge. It's also about neck muscle strength, as, as I'm sure others have said, even if he can hold his head up just fine in a normal situation, the forces of a road collision risk doing the unthinkable if he's that young and in a forward-facing seat. BUT... I moved mine into a BebeConfort (now taken over by Maxi-Cosi) Axiss when they got to the weight limit, which is a very good forward-facing with side-impact thingeys and all. They've now both outgrown that, so they're in a Group 1,2,3 seat with a 5-point harness.

nothing much to add, also love the Antilop, there is a cushion insert you can buy if you need it but I also agree with Greenish on waiting until bubs can sit unaided before starting solids anyway. Def need to be rear facing until minimum 12 months, preferably much longer edited by kiwispiers on 23/10/2011

I forgot to add, like someone else said below, these roads are so dangerous over here it is nice to know that my daughter is as safe as possible sitting rearfacing. Car accidents are the second leading cause of death over here. :(

We have a Britax Highway 2. We bought it from Carseat.se. My daughter is 13 months and we do extended rear facing (research shows that when in a crash, rearfacing children under the age of 4 are five times more likely to be safe than in forward facing seats). Carseat ships to the UAE and we got ours within just a couple of days. Our seat is good to go rearfacing for up to 25 kg (somewhere around 5 years). It has loads of leg room and head room. Hope that helps.

I know this possibly opens a whole other can of worms, but when "bumbo" 'seats' are mentioned, I just can't help myself. One of the recommendations for starting solids is that the baby should be able to sit well on their own and support their head steadily. If a baby 'needs' to be in a bumbo, they possibly shouldn't be having solids yet. I firmly believe that babies should be allowed to develop and reach milestones when their little bodies are fully ready. For a healthy, normally developing baby/toddler, I think bumbos, jolly jumpers, walkers and the like are a BAD idea. They may make it easier to entertain a child who's showing frustration because they want to sit/walk/jump, but there is a physiological reason why they can't do those things at that point...their bodies are not ready.

IKEA for the high chair and MaxiCosi for the car seat - the only car seat that is actually tested in car crash tests. hope this helps :)

So glad to be reading about this - was thinking of opening a thread with this very topic. Also glad to read about the IKEA high chair, was at IKEA last week and had been wondering about that!

Maxi Cosi Opal can be rear facing from birth until 13kg and then switched around to be forward facing! Most Babyshops and Mothercare stock them, we got ours from Mothercare!

I agree w/Kelly about the ff for such a young bub, a bit scary. Latest rec from AAP is rearf til 2. Hard, I know and few seats available locally. If you can source from abroad check out Britax Marathon/Roundabout. Reg. High chair IKEA gets another vote from me.

Ikea highchair is the best for sure. I have tried others but the Ikea one is simple and easy to clean.

I had the same advice re head level in the Cabriofix. We just bought DD's next car seat, and went for the Britax First Class Plus. This was the only seat i could find that would keep her rear facing as long as possible (Birth-13kg) and then switches to forward facing till 18kg. We actually bought two, and have been using them for 2 months now and i love them. I would be REALLY concerned about putting a baby in a forward facing seat at 6 or 9 months old. I know a lot of people do, but i watched all the crash test dummy videos about what happens in a head on collision (basically internal decapitation) and i though, not on these roads, no way! This is the seat we bought, hope this helps: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Britax-First-Class-Hi-Line-Cowmooflage/dp/B004711M14/ref=sr_1_7?s=baby&ie=UTF8&qid=1319294632&sr=1-7 Except DH refused to have cowprint in his car, so chose black for himself :) Also fed DD in her Bumbo with tray till se could sit, and then bought an Ikea high chair. its a wooden, red one with white plastic tray. Its really easy to clean, and was about 200dhs from memory.

All the UK advice says to leave them in the rear facing as long as possible and even if the legs are not straight better that than a broken neck in a forward facing seat when the neck is not mature enough. However, a lot of my friends used the same one and insisted it was too small at around 8/9 months. The advice we received in the UK from John Lewis and Halfords was that the seat was too small when the eyes were level with the sides of the seat at the top. Does that tally with what you were told? All the advisors we spoke to said legs didn't matter, it was just if the top of their head poked out over the top of the seat and that would happen when their eyes were level with the sides.

We went with the highchair that DubaiCat has and I am soooo happy with it!!! I was going to fork out an obscene amount of money for a Stokke but went the complete opposite direction with the Antilop. One of the BEST purchases I've made yet for DD. But with a highchair like the Stokke you do use it for years which is a plus. ... I've been saying for years that the IKEA chair is the single best baby purchase we ever made. It's so lightweight and unbreakable that we even took it on overseas holidays when our accom did not provide highchairs. Our Antilop has been twice to Tuscany and once to Istanbul. :D I would have LOVED to have taken our highchair on holidays with us this time round. We're currently in Oz and DD is using another type of highchair and she's hating it for some reason. We're having to sit her on a normal chair and feed her which is not always easy when she moves around so much. Can't wait to get home and have her back in her 'cheap as chips' highchair! :D

Our DD was 4kg at birth and always off the charts for height and weight. She is now 1 and we have only just taken her out of her Maxi Cosi cabriofix. All the UK advice says to leave them in the rear facing as long as possible and even if the legs are not straight better that than a broken neck in a forward facing seat when the neck is not mature enough. However, a lot of my friends used the same one and insisted it was too small at around 8/9 months. We fed DD in a bumbo seat with tray until she could sit upright and then bought an all singing all dancing peg pergo seat, what a waste of money. The food gets trapped everywhere and i end up detailing a high chair 3 times a day. Have now swapped it for the IKEA one as previosly suggested by others.

It is absolutely fine as long as the child is 100% supervised (as he/she should be anyway) because it only has a waist belt, and even that is very easy for them to wriggle out of. If we'd had the cash for a Stokke Tripp Trapp, I would have bought that in a heartbeat. Not quite as easy to clean, but a friend's child is still using hers six years after she first sat in it. The Stokke is a beautiful, practical, versatile piece of furniture.

flymum, We have just bought the next stage car seat for my LO. we went of a maxi cosi pearl. We liked it becase it will extend when she is longer and it reclines when she is sleeping (or while your baby cant sit up unaided?) and most importantly for us it had the ISOFIX base with a digital reader to ensure it is fitted right each time. High chair wise - we went for the wooden one out mothercare 0 it converts from a high chair to a toddler table and chair. We are very happy with this. it doesnt have straps but by the time you hook on the tray and there is a bar that comes up to thier lap - there is no way she is getting out. (However, she is a big baby and can sit herself). Hope this helps.

We have the Ikea Antilop and it's brilliant. Lightweight, easy to clean and dirt cheap.
