It's amazing how many people ask if he's a girl....just do not get it! As for the maid thing, apparently people used to think my Mum was our nanny when my sis and I were wee ones too! And this is back home in Oz! The mixed race card always confuses people. Too hard to explain DS's background as both his parents are mixed...he'll have fun with that when he's older!

I agree with Shellly - they get it wrong anyway! My DS is a real boy, looks like a little rugby player and again this morning (dressed in navy) I get the question - "Girl?" Ok he does have lots of lovely curls, but c'mon! Then there's the other question...am I his maid but then that's another thread.... lol SG, your wee guy is def a boy! When I first read the maid part of your post I was thinking, "of course, DS def thinks I am his maid, you should see him boss me around!", realise now you mean cos of your ethnicity. Whenever I am out with my blonde hired blue eyed friend everyone assumes DS is her second son, people do quite a double take when they realise that very blonde, almost white haired child belongs to me! Funnily enough I bought lots of green clothes before he was born as I hate the whole "blue for boys, pink for girls" thing, but then this little blue eyed cherub popped out and suddenly I had to go shopping all over again!

Boys can wear pink, girls can wear blue but I wouldn't dress my son in girls pink clothes - my husband would have a fit! :-)

My DD had poker straight hair and hated girlie clothes. She lived in dungarees as a toddler and it was a fight to get her into a dress to visit gran and papa!! DS had blond curly hair, blue eyes and huge eyelashes!! Back in the late 70s/ early 80s, clothes were very much pink for girls and blue for boys but I have no probs with boys wearing pink. My DS would have screamed blue murder (pardon the pun) if I'd tried to put him in pink mind you! DH was a young man in the 70s and he loved his pink, yellow and lilac shirts with tie to match!! :D

I say dress your baby in what ever colour you want to. Regardless of dressing girls in pink and boys in blue, people STILL guess INCORRECTLY anyway! :D

of course baby boys can wear pink, they can also (and always used to) wear dresses. You can even put bows in their hair or sparkly hairclips (although i wouldn't inflict that on any baby, boy or girl) Since mostly this is how girls are dressed it is only natural that most people will assume it is a girl baby. It is otherwise very difficult to tell the difference between a boy and girl baby apart from clothing cues (or checking what is under the nappy). If you don't mind the confusion then put your boy in pink, if you'd prefer people could accurately guess the gender then put them in clothes that give some clues. If you'd like to be ambiguous then put them in gender neutrals (greens, yellows etc) there are way more choices than pink or blue! I found even in pale blue clothes my son was constantly taken as a girl, so I switched to navy and grey. I don't know why it irked me but it did, I guess most people see gender as part of our identity, and fashion is about expressing identity, so gender specific clothes are a part of this.

I was wondering about the same thing! If men can wear pink shirts, why can't baby boys wear pink clothes? My little one looks really cute in a purple hat I bought him with a pink Snow White on it :)

DS has a pale pink polo shirt. Real men wear pink :D. I agree, real men wear pink they don't have to fight for their masculinity with wearing certain colors :) Must be honest, I'd have no probs to buy pink stuff for DS but I'd not go for girly patterns all over... Hello Kitty? At the moment no, but if he'd ask, I wouldnt mind though. Let him look and be what he wants and desires.

Definitely a cultural think, and a very 'modern' idea too. Here's a link to a Smithsonian article on the topic. Pop culture, consumerism, war and the women's lib movement all play a part, interestingly! http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/When-Did-Girls-Start-Wearing-Pink.html?c=y&page=1

Of course boys can wear pink but I think it is easier to differentiate the gender of a baby according to the color of their clothes. I am due to have a boy and I will not be putting him in pink clothes as a baby. But that 'pink is for boys, blue is for girls' is a cultural thing. There must be plenty of cultures that don't dress in a certain colour according to gender...my girls were often in head to toe pink when they were little and I was often asked, "Is it a boy or a girl".

Ha.. i would ignore it. I dont buy into all this 'x is for girls and y is for boys' crappola. DD spend most of her first hear in combats and board shorts and people were constantly thinking she was a boy. It doesn't really bother me... i don't care what randoms think!

That's the point!!! The other day DS ( who's 4months) wore a very cute baby pink jumper with little heart motifs to the mall and most of the people goes , ooooo..... She is soo cute! When it got irritating , I told it's a he and the lady goes pink is for girls!!!!! edited by Mom.an.me on 08/02/2012 Yeah that's for girls .. Lol ... Pink with hearts :D .. But at 4 months my DS used to wear a tshirt that read 'baby girl' (in tiny letters of course :D) But They do lovely macho pink for boys! My DS has one and he looks the best in it! But very hard to find it (I got DS's from Next) because of the stereo typing probably.

My son has a pink shirt. He's had quite a few over the years. A friend here had three girls, then a boy. The wee man spent his first six weeks in pink wondersuits and floral cloth nappies. :D Why can't pink be worn by boys? Now, a pink frilly skirt might be another issue altogether! :D
