I want to buy the new ipad, 32GB wifi. We are travelling soon so as well as here in Dubai, we could buy in the UK or Florida in US. I was holding out to buy in the US but after looking online, there seems to be not that much difference in price once the state tax is added. Any recommendations?

I bought mine in the UK so I have FaceTime and everything. It has an International warranty for anywhere in the world. I got the tax back when I left the UK. It was easy, we got the form at the Apple shop, they signed the form and put the serial number on it. We queued at the tax returns place for a out 10 mins and then collected £50 odd in cash. The iPad is the best thing I've ever bought. I went to China for 6 weeks with mine and I used it for everything, translating, shopping lists, photos, e-mails, Skype, downloaded my UK newspaper every day, games, downloaded books etc etc. In fact, I'm sat in my lounge now, typing this on my iPad despite having a desktop and laptop near me. Honestly, it's fab!

I keep making enquiries in the istyle store. The ipad 3 hasnt 'officially' been released here. You can get the ipad 3 from stalls, lulu's offered me one etc but they have been brought in from abroad, hence they often have facetime etc. Same with ipad 2's from these locations. Istyle keep telling me maybe 2 more weeks! I guess more fool them as theyre loosing out to the other shops who are selling the 3's

The online Apple store here has prices that are pretty good. The good thing about buying in the US is that you can buy a warranty for worldwide. Not sure about warranty with the on line... http://store.apple.com/ae Note that the online Apple store in UAE does not offer the new ipad 3 yet. All the prices mentioned there are for the old, ipad 2

Yes claiming the VAT back is easy just have the receipts, the product and the stamped vat form from the shop you bought it at. You can check the dixons price online to see if it is cheaper to buy from amazon or on the high street and claim the tax back. The vat desk is normally by the check in desks.

Apologies for hijacking this... IF anyone is looking into buying an iPad Smart cover (can be used for ipad 2 & latest model iPad) I've got a brand new one going at a discounted price. Grey colour, concertina type, it rolls over and acts as a stand AED 189 from Virgin Will sell for AED150 (including screen skin) I ended up with two as of last week & Virgin won't take it back because the box has been opened :( edited by KCQ on 01/04/2012

If you purchase an Apple product overseas, it is automatically covered with a one year international warranty. I got my hubby an iPad 2 last year in the US and the mic had stopped working a few months ago. He was able to bring it to an authorized Apple service provider here in Dubai and they replaced it since it was still under warranty. If you are interested in the new iPad 3, my hubby has an extra one he purchased last week in London. He bought it for his friend here who no longer wants it. It is the 32GB with 4g in black - if you want it, he will sell it to you at cost which is 3400 dhs. Just let me know :)

So why not just buy it in Dixons in the Duty Free section? Didn't consider this as we fly both in and out of Dublin and Belfast this summer. I don't want to wait for our return journey to Dubai to buy one in Dublin and I am not convinved that Belfast Intl will have the ipad we want in stock at the time. I would rather be sure of getting what I want, which wouldn't be a problem if I was flying through London ;)

Thanks for all the replies so far, there is so much to consider before buying one. Another thought I had today was that if bought in the UK, could I claim back the VAT before returning to Dubai. I have never done this with any purchase before, has anyone else tried it successfully?

The good thing about buying in the US is that you can buy a warranty for worldwide. Not sure about warranty with the on line... Apple's standard warranty is worldwide, so it doesn't matter if you buy online or from a physical Apple store, US or UK. It ought to be the same with the UAE online Apple store, but we all know how things aren't always as the ought to be here ;) I haven't bothered checking prices, but it always used to be the case that buying from the USA was the cheapest option. If UAE prices really are little different to the dollar prices, though, then we'd buy here, just for the convenience. We have bought several pieces/items through the new Dubai online store in the last 6 months and have been very pleased eg we bought an Ipod which went belly up in 2 days - we called them and we had a new one in 2 days - engraved as well. They then sent a delivery company to the house to pick up the broken one. All this with one phone call. Can you imagine trying that if you had bought at Carrefour!:\: We feel that the % difference is acceptable especially for large items and the convenience like the iMac and of course you can customise as you want. There is no doubt though that the US is cheaper e.g. 64 iPod here is $462 whereas on US store it is $399. The warranty I am referring to is an extra Apple one which was specifically for our ipads and is a " call us and we will send you a new one instantly" for about $60. At the time when ipads were new, we felt it was worth it as a new product at the time but fortunately have never had to call on it.

I've got vouchers worth AED1200 from Jacky's electronics but unfortunately I've already amassed a huge pile of gadgets n' gizmos. I wouldn't mind parting with the vouchers for AED1100. If you're interested, do let me know..

I just got a new Iphone from Australia. I ordered it from the apple shop (we have an Aus itunes account) and had it sent to my parents. then they posted it to me. took 7 days including both lots of shipping! If you want facetime it needs to come from somewhere else. The 4g on the ipads will be the same everywhere but not all countries are compatible. There is a lawsuit going on in Australia as the 4G on the ipad doesn't work on the Aus 4G network. Australia probably not the best place in the world to buy...due to very strong aus dollar and everything seems to cost more there. But we have Aussie dollars and it's easy for us.

fyi: Heads up. The 4G does not work over here. The 4G from N America is on a different frequency than the 4G abroad. Was in the newspaper yesterday http://www.ipadforums.net/apple-ipad-news/67048-new-ipad-4g-lte-version-will-not-supported-many-countries-outside-north-america.html edited by americanfamily3 on 30/03/2012 There is no technically correct 4G anywhere ! There is ongoing debate about all of this. Big piece on Dubai Eye about it. You will still get great performance and a fabulous display ( I hear...) . What they refer to as 4G doe snot come up to the stated requirements. Do some googling, Beebers. edited by spongemonkey on 30/03/2012

af3, I was really surprised to read this, thanks for sharing that. I was considering buying one because of getting tired of toting my laptop over the pond--now I will definitely be doing more research! :/

I was thinking about buying an Ipad too Fairyprincess. I"m not sure whether to buy one in Dubai or here in Australia. My concern is if I buy it in Australia and there are any problems with it whilst we are living in Dubai - will they honor the warranty in Dubai?
