All Etisalat SIMs not re-registered will be cancelled

Following the launch of the “My Number, My Identity” campaign by the UAE Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA), Etisalat today announced the near-completion of all procedures to begin SIM card registration for its mobile customers.

Starting July 17, 2012, Etisalat’s customers can choose from over 100 points of sale across the UAE to process their mobile registration.

Registration of the SIM card is only required once and all unregistered SIM cards will be cancelled once the registration period expires.

As per the directive of the TRA, mobile customers in the UAE are required to update their profile in the operator database and ensure all SIM holders are the same as the registered owner of the SIM card.

Customers will need to register their SIM cards by submitting an application form along with valid identification document including Passport with valid residency, Emirates or GCC ID card. For business and government customers, the requirement is a valid establishment card.

Commenting on the registration campaign, Saleh Abdulla Al Abdooli, Chief Executive Officer, Etisalat, said: “The My Number, My Identity campaign aims primarily at providing the necessary protection to subscribers and enabling them to procure all services easily. Etisalat has fully harnessed its resources to complete this process successfully for its customers through its points of sale.

"This campaign is particularly important for subscribers because it prevents any unauthorised or criminal usage of SIM cards and helps in curbing legal or social violations besides reducing frauds that have been noticed during few last years.

From looking at the the infomation on Etisalat website, it seems to say that once we have registered our numbers there is still going to be limited validity of our rights to that number and to maintain ownership of our numbers we will have to keep re-registering our details indefinately as long as we are here. So this whole process of having to go in to Etisalat or Du is not going to be a one off thing at all. "[i'>Verifying and maintaining the valid ID details The registered and re-registered mobile numbers will stay active as long as the ID is valid. Once the ID expired, you have to re-register the mobile numbers again. In case you do not re-register your mobile numbers after ID expiry, then those mobile numbers will be suspended and disconnected. "[/i'> http://www.etisalat.ae/eportal/en/generic/re-registration.html

I just registered my number (as annoying as it was - because they already had my passport copy, etc) at DU last week. There was no que, I showed them my Emirates ID and was out of there less than 5 mins later. So no need to wait for the sms from DU? I'd love to do the registration now since my residence visa will be cancelled soon... otherwise I'd only have a landline like looooong time ago!

Well, as an example, my number is registered under someone's name who has long left the country. :\: So I guess what they want to do is register all numbers under a system which will also have visa details etc on it, so when the visa expires/is cancelled etc, so is the number. It makes sense.

If you bought a post-paid number in another country, you would have to provide proof of address/ID etc, would you not? Of course - at the point of sale. Which is exactly what we've all already done here, so it seems to be a duplication to have to do it again! If the original cumbersome process for applying for a SIM card here hasn't done the trick in terms of ensuring numbers don't get into unauthorised users hands, I can't see how repeating the process will help really.

Apparently DU customers will only get 3 months from the time of notification for registering their Sim cards before they are cut off. They just love making people "register" for things here, don't they? I guess it helps make work for the army of government employees, especially now that they've almost finished with the bulk of the ID card registration and from now on it'll be integrated with the residency visa. We'll have to register to be able to flush the toilet soon. For security, you understand. BTW, anyone hoping that this will make a difference to the number of spam calls and texts they get, not a chance. That's nothing to do with SIMs, and everything to do with the fact that our personal details are sold commercially by companies here. You are so right, its not right that our private unlisted numbers are sold to marketing companies, why do they think we opt for unlisted? This whole excercise is not going to benefit us at all.

We all provided all the paperwork when we got our sims originally but was the data ever correctly recorded. I recall reading that the TRA vastly overestimated the number of mobile phone users in the country.

[i'>"Every mobile phone user in the UAE will have to re-register their SIM cards as part of a new campaign to crackdown on the fraudulent and criminal use of handsets."[/i'> All Etisalat and DU mobile customers will have to provide valid identification documents such as passports, Emirates ID cards and residency visas for the re-registration process. I only hope in this way one day it will be possible to catch all these stupid people calling for "***" every moment during days and nights....:\:

We have produce visa and passport copy when purchasing, so don't they register the sim at the same time, grrrr this place really annoys me sometimes . it would appear that this is a security measure as lots of people are using sims that belong to someone else edited by ishehere on 28/06/2012 Yes, so what happens to the SIMS that our children use that are registered in our names, and how many SIMS are we going to be allowed to have under this new scheme "My Number, My Identity " Is this going to mean one number per registered user I wonder?

It would have to take 18 months; so many come and go here it would be a nightmare to try and wrap this up any sooner. What is ludicrous to me, is that Dubai is a such an enormous business hub; Why would they want to make it harder to do business here, i.e. communication being an issue once you land in the emirate? They have great free zones, but let's face it--they are not the only ones who do. Again, arbitrary and conflicting dates...

No use in worrying about this, it's obvious nothing is clear now, terms and deadlines are bound to change, and then change again and again, so just wait for more updates about it.

7 days says deadline in 18 months time. Wonder where 7 days get that, they have not even officially announced any deadline date, but given the history of "deadlines" everyone get ready for a nice roller coaster ride.

I tried the website, too, and found nothing. From what I read below, they're saying if you don't have a current residency visa, your SIM card will be cancelled? Seems so, if the SIM is not re-registered with evidence of passort, visa and residency it will be cancelled at the end of the deadline. This mean all those who fly in to Dubai for business or pleasure and have no residency are going to lose their SIMS.

Of course there's nothing about this on the actual Etisalat website. So when's the "registration" deadline? I'm not back until October 1st, it will be extremely annoying to get a new number after having the same one for 7 years :\:

Seriously annoying. Take of days for attesting everything … ID, tentancy contract, and now your existing phone number … they start really pissing me off here.
