Hi ladies, Does anyone know if this injection is available in Dubai? if so where did you have it done and do you recommend it as appose to IUDs?

Why do you need to get off the pill? I have been on it for over 10 years and my doctor says there is nothing wrong with that. Also look at the side effects of depo. Read the studies. There are more side effects then the pill (ex. Weight gain). My doc has also told me that the pill is completely safe to use for long periods of time. Like OP the IUD scares the life out of me. I thought I had to come off the pill as I have been on it for a long time, but when exploring options both here and in the UK my docs have told me to stay on the pill as it is completely safe. In the past the pill had more risks but the pills these days do not have the same side effects.

Elevated warning qouting "Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate injectable suspension) Audience: Reproductive and other healthcare professionals FDA and Pfizer notified healthcare professionals of the addition of a BOXED WARNING along with revisions to the WARNINGS, INDICATIONS AND USAGE, PRECAUTIONS and POSTMARKETING EXPERIENCE sections of the prescribing information to include information on the loss of significant bone mineral density. Depo-Provera Contraceptive Injection is indicated only for the prevention of pregnancy in women of child-bearing potential. Bone loss is greater with increasing duration of use and may not be completely reversible. Depo-Provera Contraceptive should be used as a long-term birth control method (eg, longer than 2 years) only if other birth control methods are inadequate".

Hi Ausjor, I used depo for less than a year about 7 years ago + I was also in the 'bad reaction to it' camp. I found myself feeling really low + started to lose hair, slowly at first then really noticeably! I had bald patches all over. Got my full head of hair back eventually thank Goodness, but it took over a year once I'd come off it. A doctor I knew said I should have taken mulitvitamins such as those comprehensive ones including iron you take when pregnant to counter act the side effects.

Most women had quite a few if not ALL of the side effects for this injection. Still uncomfortable with the IUD so might stick to the pill now. I have been on for more than 9 years and my doctor was horridied when I mentioned this! Thanks all... x

I used to get mine at GMC on beach road, it was 95 Dhs I think for 3 months. The ONLY thing is everyone reacts differently and once you've had it if there are any issues there is nothing you can do about it for 3 months. I used it for years then came off it, but it took 8 months for my cycle to return. As a tester, try using the Cerazette pill - it's the same hormones and you take it for 28 days. if you get on alright with that, then the Depo will be ok for you - that's what I had to do. this is an excellent suggestion. I was in the "reacted horribly" camp and let me tell you, not only were those 3 months awful, my doctor told me it would take another 18 weeks AFTER the 90 days of efficacy for me to normalize. This was in 1999; the docs were really pushing depo. Many of my friends had it, and more than half of us had really bad side effects. good luck with whatever you choose to do!

Think i had this injection after my recent operation ... Seemed like such a "little" injection compared to years of zoladex. I need to look into what it actually does, if its the same thing i was told i had to have it every 3 months for 2 years, unless my IVF dr says im fit to have another cycle soon...

Loved Depro.... Was on it for 7 years. No periods and didn't put weight on. Sure everyone reacts to different things but, as a contraceptive, I think it takes some beating...

hi there.... my friend also had the depo injection at the gmc and i also do not think it was covered by the insurance.... i have just text her and will try and find out how much she paid.... i know that it lasts for 3 months.....

Thank you Cheeky Monkey! This is excellent. I really need to get off the pill as I have been on for a long long (really long time) but don't feel comfortable with the IUD thing. Do you know how much approx the cost? I presume it is not covered under insurance? Thanks! Hmmm, can't remember as it was a while ago and has probably gone up by now... it wasn't covered by my insurance, but then not much was haha! I am sure someone will be able to give you a price in the morning when everyone is up and about. Failing that, pick a clinic at random and ask, I'm pretty sure they will tell you over the phone. I used to get mine at GMC in the Magrudy Centre on Beach Road if that helps! :)

Yes, definitely available in Dubai and you should be able to get it done at any clinic. Although everyone reacts differently, I definitely recommend it. To be honest, I was a total witch the first month I had it done, but so glad I continued with it. No periods and hormonally stable all month! Came off it and got pregnant quickly. Am planning on going back on it very soon as my baby days are over! :)
