Are there the facilities to have a water birth here? Any of you or your friends experienced this? Im pregnant with my first child and like the sound of a water birth, any pros and cons?

Shame that they don't do it here. I personally can recommend it. Both water births second one induced. Water softens the area and reduces chances of tearing. I don't want to sound arguemnative but the water does not reduce the risk of tearing (research based evidence) Hi Jillp. Would you mind posting a link to the research as I'm interested in this. I always thought that birthing in water reduced the risk of tearing. That was certainly my own experience - DS was a big baby but I remained in tact! Thanks.

I actually understood it to be illegal. Maybe that comes from it not being offered at hospitals, and doing it at home would be illegal? Such a shame.

Is there not a risk of the baby drowning with a water birth? No because babies are already in amniotic fluid and just going from that to water, the lungs stay collapsed until the introduction of air and the need to take a breath. Ah okay, thank you.

Sorry I can unhappily confirm there are no birthing pools at City Hospital, I went in and met with them the other day to discuss if we could consider introducing such facilities etc. but unfortunately their birthing rooms are way too small and the insurance limitations are too great. Dear OP i'm a Doula here and would be happy to discuss what hospitals have what facilities if you wish to email me. Andrea @thedotingdoulas.com (Edited to add) My reason for not posting this information is that not all hospitals are open about their facilities as they don't want you to use them I have been told by Midwives what is available but have been asked to keep it quiet. Although I don't agree with this I don't want to get these ladies into trouble as they are friends and colleagues. I hope you understand <em>edited by AndreaA on 23/03/2011</em>

There is unconfirmed sighting of a birthing pool at City Hospital. I would check them out. Also, there is a birthing centre opening up in Al Ain with proper birthing rooms, baths, etc. Not sure when it is open but it sounds wonderful.

I know 2 friends who had water birth - 1 in France and 1 in the UK and they absolutely loved it, and the baby too it seems! - Everything went perfectly, no pain, no anxiety.

My SIL had her first child in a water birth, went absolutely fine. Even though the baby was massive she suffered no tears or problems at all. So she's probably going to do it again with no. 2. She didn't do it here though.

Sorry op, there are absolutely no water births in Dubai. It's a very backward place in terms of giving birth, overly medicalised and controlling in my opinion. Suggest you find a good doctor for your pregnancy who will encourage natural delivery and let you move around/take a shower in labour- they are out there! Xxx

water births are great (I've heard) and I've also heard that Medcare does have a birthing pool, but I've also heard that they don't really know what to do (this was about 2 years ago, so hopefully they've had more training since) and so don't really let you use it, or don't let you actually give birth in it. If the facilities are there and the staff are properly trained (which you'd hope they were), there is no reason why you can't give birth in the water, as long as you've had a normal pregnancy and labour. It does, however, mean that you can't have an epidural, but those women I know who've had a water birth found the water helped to such an extent that they didn't need one. Call up the hospitals and see what facilities they have and what their policies are. That's the only real way you'll find out your options.
