Can I find out the owner of a vehicle without involving the police?

Someone damaged the paintwork on my car today when I was filling up with petrol. I was at the front pump, they were behind and finished before me, so chose to pull out and drive through the gap, which was clearly too small. We felt my car being nudged and then she just drove off without stopping!

It's a small area of paintwork and I am reluctant to involve the police or the insurance company. The gas station staff were great and we got the reg no and make from the CCTV recording.

My question is: Is there a way of finding out who the owner is from these details without involving the police? I feel she really should pay for the repair, but don't want the hassle of going through the official route. Anyone got a contact at the RTA or any other suggestions? Thanks.

Jeez..... I wish it was me, I think that I would enjoy dragging you through the courts. It is ok to make a mistake and not realize that one has nudged a car ( you didn't say crashed, did you?). Besides breaking the law and planning to do further illegal activity, I find your online etiquette pretty rough. We would have enjoyed dragging you through court for selling non-halal chicken to muslims too. Now, that is on your head into the afterworld.

I hardly think a partial number plate counts as someone's personal details. Nor does white female or white Volvo. mumofmoo, and Azaiba, you have understood my point - thanks!! I too have reminded myself why I rarely come on this site any more. I won't be commenting further, but for those who do, I hope it makes you feel good about yourselves. Have a great day everyone! Its a shame you had the audience you did today Sue. Lighten up, ladies!

I don't think there's a big security threat in what has been posted . Do you guys know every one who has a volvo ending with whatever number in and around the ranches? How would you find out any way? ( the original question lol) . People post email ids and phone numbers of random contacts here , is that a security breach as well? Started with a mole hill .. mountain in the making . That said , Sue just go to the cops , tell them some moron scratched your car , they give you a slip .. live life normally. Its the only way things work out in this part of the world x

Im not sure a partial number plate counts as someone's personal details seeing as there is nobody to link the number plate too. My number plate is out there for the whole world to see! I could post my neighbours number plate here and none of you would have a clue who he is, where he lives, what he looks like or anything else reltaing to him. You dont even know the car. You may be able to find out the make and model of it but thats not personal either I don't think you could even find out the make and model. Even if you went onto the RTA website and they person had fines it would still not give out the personal details of that person :-)

Sue R - This thread has reminded me why I rarely go on this website anymore. In Oman we have a wonderful website where everyone is polite and helpful.which is how expatwoman used to be. I am sorry you have been the brunt of total disrespect from certain parties. Hang on a minute - so it's alright for her to post up someone's personal details - which is illegal!!! Then to accuse others on the forum of being the culprit?! I think you've got you idea of who is the disrespectful one twisted here.

Wow, you guys are a bit mean. OP was trying to find the lady to sort it out nicely without involving the police and making the driver's insurance premiums increase over a minor incident. I think it is a thoughtful gesture! As for posting the number plate, perhaps sheshould have just poted "can the owner of car xxxxx please make themselves known" and let it at that. Then you wouldnt have anything to be horrible to her about

o m g and why on earth would you assume it's someone in the Ranches ? 1.50 is probably too late for most schools in that direction... sorry, but really bad form to put all this info on a public forum.... and before you ask, no it isn't me!

This happened at the gas station on the E311 (Old Emirates Road) immediately after the Arabian Ranches main entrance yesterday at approx 1.50pm. I am guessing the driver lives in AR and was on her way to do a school pick up. I will be able to look around AR myself, but if anyone knows a white female who drives a white Volvo 4x4 Reg - H**421, please tell her it looks like I have no alternative but to involve the police. I am happy to discuss privately if she wishes. Many thanks. edited by Sue R on 21/10/2013 Holy Cr8p if that was me and I had not realised that I had damaged a car I would be filing a case against you for posting my personal details on a website. You are suggesting to do something illegal and then to top it off you post personal details **Clapping hands** way to go .......

Oh come on now. Basically putting someone's personal details online isn't allowed either! Just go to the police - which you should have done in the first place. Explain what happened and they'll call her. All this drama over nothing. Thanks for your support. Did you notice I left out part of the reg no? Was it you? er no! - be very careful before you start throwing accusations at people!!! Still there's enough info there for some people to work it out. As I said, putting peoples personal details online goes against UAE privacy laws! Sue, just call the police, tell them what happened and let them contact her - or go and deal with it yourself. OR you can simply say to the police that your car was scratched and you don't know who did it - they will give you a green slip anyway so your insurance would cover it. FYI, someone scratched the entire rear side of my car the other week - haven't done anything about it. Will just deal with it myself. edited by FairyDust on 21/10/2013

I highly doubt the RTA will give you personal details If you don't want to pay for it yourself then you will have to involve the police I'm surprised she didn't realise she had nudged your car As the OP stated it is illegal not to report it however many don't Good Luck

Well, what you want to do is illegal. It is also illegal for them to show you the CCTV recording. It is also illegal for you to NOT report the incident. Now you have to decide what to do. I am choosing to go to one of those garages in Al Quoz for minor paintwork repair. Just like thousands of others do. If I was the one who'd (probably unknowingly) done this to someone else's car I'd be positively grateful they contacted me instead of reporting me to the police. As far as the gas station is concerned, they can't give me a copy of the CCTV recording without the police's involvement, but they encouraged me to go through it with them and gave me their ID no and contact details. If anyone has any useful suggestions I'd be very grateful.
