Ladies, we agree, love it or not, best to make the best of it while here! Travel to places nearby, eat tons of good ME food, hit the beaches and enjoy the good weather 6 months out of year. And so...its a beautiful day out today. I am going to take my kid out to the park, with a blanket, some snacks and a good book. ;) Lets stop staring at these glowing boxes and enjoy the weather before its too hot to do much outside :)

American exceptionalism rears its ugly head again. Sigh. There you go again, being "mindful". Ha! Read my post below about what was meant by arohadxb's comment. My post above had nothing to do with it, and while I am mindful of my fellow residents [and locals'> that does not stop me having an opinion about certain comments being made by others. I do see that some of the opinions expressed here, especially with regards to Dubai's infancy on the world stage [it not being a first world country, for example, and having human rights issues and people who push others in supermarkets!!'> as an example of American -- and indeed, western -- exceptionalism. I will admit that this isn't the forum in which to discuss this issue -- call my post a flight of fancy if you will! -- but there are a great many people who come to Dubai from ALL OVER the western world, who will always judge it based on their own country's status in the world, who will compare local laws and red tape with their OWN good [sic'> legislation. That's exceptionalism. And I defy anyone to disagree with me. :D

I have never felt any fear vis-a-vis being a second-class citizen. I comport myself with discretion and modesty and obey the local laws. I consider myself a temporary resident but one who has made Dubai her home and not a halfway house. I am aware of my surroundings and take care not to offend anyone, regardless of their background [and that includes other Westerners, so-called 'underclass' workers' and locals'>. I have taken the time to learn a great deal about the UAE -- its history, laws, and social and cultural mores -- and in doing so, have learned to respect and love the city in which I live. And of course this makes a difference why ?

I do find it quite amusing how people can so passionately hate a place. Dubai really isn't that bad is it? And for the most part we CHOOSE to come here, and we can just as easily CHOOSE to leave, so why make such a big deal about how much you hate it?

take care not to offend anyone, regardless of their background [and that includes other Westerners But you have no problem seeing the irony in a statement made by another person who used "Americans" as an "example"? Of course not. She may well have said that Australians are uncouth and culture-shy. All she was doing was saying it was LIKE SAYING all Americans are loud. Which she wasn't saying at all. She was merely using the statement as an example of a generalisation. This is nit-picking in the extreme. :\:

I find it sad that at times this is almost like a brainwashing on this site. Everyone trying to force those who don't like Dubai into a forced love. The relentless attack on those of us who don't like it is amazing. I think it works both way, no? There are ppl who hate Dubai and look at ppl who love Dubai as desperate, probably come from an awful country to begin with, materialistic as they chose to be here instead of with family back in their country, etc. Like I said, I neither love nor hate Dubai. The thing that I don't get it is ppl who hates it and had left and enjoying their life in their home or new country but still keep on coming to bash dubai. When my time come, I just bid goodbye to friends, leave and that's it. edited by blimey on 24/03/2011 I won't be on here to bash Dubai. It hasn't been all bad for me. I am just not fond of it. I have said before I and still say it, I have had a bit of sadness about leaving. But when I look at everything, I realize the negatives for me outweigh the positives. That is just me. I am happy that people have found the love for this place. I have multiple friends that love being here.. I don't knock them for it nor do they knock me for not being in love with here.

I hope you have continued success and happiness. Everything said above, is great. But in my opinion. its not enough. I worked at a place, that shall remain nameless, where a local woman persued a western gentlemen and he was not interested. She was so furious and offended that she worked up such a storm that she got him fired. And from what I hear was also trying to get him in some sort of legal trouble. I know this happens in the west, but it takes a lot more than to just snap your fingers and fire someone with everyone knowing that the man was innocent but that they needed to give your way.

I never said you had to shut up about loving Dubai. I have seen multiple comments on here from people telling people that they don't know what they are missing, or they don't know how to enjoy dubai, or how they must be pathetic human beings because they can't find the love of this place. The first several comments to the now MIA OP were goodbye, good ridance, can't stand moaners, blah blah blah. I am happy to be leaving next week. I will not let the door hit me on the backside on my way out. I would never consider living here again simply because the backwards laws of this place do my head in. I can't stand the rude pushy people in stores. I can't stand how we are supposed to live in fear of the locals and they LIKE it that way. Heaven forbid we offend the wrong person or they have a wild hair up their backside and decide to turn you in for some ficticious offense. It is pathetic that the majority of the police force is too intimidated to do any real work for fear of peeving the wrong person. So they pick on labor workers and other domestic types of help just because they can and feel as if they have some form of authority. All of this talk about "wasta" is ridiculous. NO ONE should be exempt from upholding the laws. However some just seem to flount them because they know they can just go talk to he good ol police chief and walk away scot free. I look forward to knowing I am going to a place where the law enforcement is respected, laws are upheld and NO one regardless of nationality is exempt from upholding them. BC, I love you. See my post below, its this that bothers me here. Its not right until these things change, it cannot be considered a first world country. I hope it does change, I know Dubai is young and has some growing up to do-so I hope for her sake, these things do change here. xx

I am an american, and I know America is not perfect and we have our problems. But you know what I love about America, and think about it in comparison to here, everyone has rights. Even an illegal undocumented worker has rights in America-There have been cases of illegal immigrants suing for unpaid wages. and in fact a lot of people take advantage of our laws that protect and benefit...but thats another story. The biggest problem I have here, is that even with a residency visa, I work and spend money therefore contributing to the economy here, yet I will always be viewed as 2nd or even 3rd class and have no rights. In fact I am really at the mercy of anyone with wasta? I find that scary. What if I unknowingly cross someone and they decide thats it, I am going to do what i can to ruin her life. They do it, they get away with it, and it happens often.

But Americans are loud, no? If course it's a generalization but there's a hard core truth to it. Americans as a whole are a loud and gregarious group of people. Just like how most Americans seem to wear blindingly white sneakers whenever they travel. I'm fully aware that Americans are deserving of their reputation for being overweight even though I'm not nor are most of my friends. Generalizations aren't entirely unfair to make as long as you recognize that there are always exceptions. What? Me? Being judgemental? thats a laugh given some of the opinions being stated on this thread. It's not a judgement I am making, I just catorgorically state that the above generalization is just that: a gross generalization. Its like saying all americans are loud. Crystal- I was thinking the same thing. The well-wishers were such a minority in a thread that took a turn. Many posters just did not want to hear an opinion other than theirs hence the ones who claim to be the most happy had a sense of bitterness-ironic. Everyone has the right to an opinion. Differences of opinion can be discussed, but it's hard to do on a forum where some people think that there are only two opinions that count - their's and those who agree with them. I don't like milk chocolate, but love dark chocolate, [b'>I can't stand Galaxy chocolate[/b'>, some love it. It's a matter of taste. I wonder if those who disagree with the OP so passionately would be so "in the face" if it was a face-to-face discussion. I wish the OP all the best - and respect her opinion - whether I agree with it or not, in whole or in part. I was yours until that bit :( I wish I had never bought property here because it's the one thing keeping me here; I want to leave. There are things we want to do as a family that we just can't do here so we want to move to a place that fits us better. If I could sell my house I'd leave the region the following day. I have friends who just love it here and want to stay as long as they can. I don't quite get why they feel that way but they can't understand why we [i'>don't[/i'> love it. All said though, we each respect each others different feelings and don't ever let it become an obstacle in our friendship. One of the reasons we never bought property again after our villa was sold was because we knew it would be quite difficult to offload when we wanted to leave. I have a friend that finally sold their house after 2 years of trying. They got their wish and left a month ago. And couldn't be happier about the new life they have embarked on. Dubai is not for everyone. It will never be for evryone. It was never for me, but until recently my dh was in love with this place. I find it sad that at times this is almost like a brainwashing on this site. Everyone trying to force those who don't like Dubai into a forced love. The relentless attack on those of us who don't like it is amazing. see it's comments like this bornconfused that i totally disagree with. There is no brainwashing, I can't see attacks, I see no one (there possibly is, but I can't be bothered looking to prove self wrong or right) FORCING people to accept only their point of veiw. As grown ups we're all entitled to our opinions, this site is just one medium for discussion, sharing of opinions, hopefully leaning and accepting others points and life experience. We're all different, as has been proved over and over again. No ones life experinece, knowledge or veiwpoint came out of the same cookie cutter express machine. We all know people who (in this case in point) hate dxb, love it, are indifferent, are happy where ever they are or equally miserable. Personally I havent not been friends with someone because they hate the place or love to shop. Now for all the dubai lovers, why should they feel they have to shut up when it comes to talking about the dubai they know and love? Just as no one says that all the anti dubai people or the indifferent dubai people should just suck it up and be quiet about it? If we can't discuss or share veiwpoints about soemthing as simple (or as complicated!) as this city we live in, what kind of society would we have then?

omg, you don't like galaxy? Clearly you come from a cr*p place that has no good chocolate. How can you not love Galaxy?! Why don't you just move back to your dark gray country with no milk chocolate! I challenge you to find a Galaxy bar, any Galaxy bar, you don't like! I think its you, perhaps you didnt try hard enough, with all the galaxy choices to be had, you choose to sit at home and long for dark chocolate!? Did you give all the Galaxy bars a chance?? I am sure you didn't experience all Galaxy has to offer. I bet you suck down chocolate that tastes like chalk back home and don't know real, classy, indulgent chocolate like Galaxy! Moaner! Ahhh, what do you know??? You're from NYC!!!! I KNOW CHOCOLATE!! ;) And anyone who doesn't like the same things I do, well then there is just something wrong with you and your opinion is invalid! I only like people that agree with me on EVERYTHING! including chocolate! bwahahaha!
