If you have a child with developmental delay, how many hours of therapy does he/she have per week?
The reason I am asking it is because my DD has been diagnosed as mild global develpmental delay and she has 12 hours of therapy per week. And now the centre wants to increase the hours further. We find it difficult to cope both in time and financially. And I am thinking to change the centre. However I am afraid in another centre we will be in the same situation.
If you have a developmental delay child, I would really appreicate your advise.
TIA

I am reading this thread with great interest. Is it really possible to get a licence to practise therapy privately in Dubai?

My nephew is also on the spectrum and ABA has worked wonders for him. I also agree with joannat2009 that caution needs to be taken and certainly these therapies are not for all kids on the spectrum.

I tried speech and ABA therapy for my younger son who is in the autism spectrum.I would like to write the following for the parents in search of these type of services in UAE, special about ABA therapy ,which has helped my son to come out of his behavior issues and it produced very fast results compared to other sort of therapies which I had tried with him. ABA therapy services should be chosen only if it is designed and supervised by a behavior analyst certified by the Board of Behavior Analyst in USA.Since each child is unique ,a therapy program which is not designed specifically for your child and not monitored by behavior analyst will cost you a lot and benefit you less.I am so lucky that I met this wonderful lady who is a Board certified behavior analyst ,in few months my son was behaving like almost like a normal child . I am just pasting her site name here http://www.asha4autism.com she was working previously in http://www.abacenter.org .unlike others SHE WILL GUIDE PARENTS TO HOW TO DO FOLLOW UP THERAPY AT HOME SO THAT CHILD WILL BENEFIT MORE . Following sites tells you how to choose an ABA Therapist http://www.autismspeaks.org/what-autism/treatment/applied-behavior-analysis-aba http://www.behavior-consultant.com/certified%20therapist.htm Good Luck and God Bless

HI, there has been some great advice posted on here. Ive noticed that parents here seem to be put under so much pressure to give their children more and more therapy. Parents need to remember they are the 'experts' when it comes to their own children and have the confidence to follow their own gut instincts as to whether such intense therapy is of use. The clinics etc. offering the therapies are running a business and are out to make money. Obviously not all of them are unscrupulous but they know that a lot of parents will be able to use their insurance to pay and those who can't will do anything to help and support their child to develop. As someone else said, research as much as you can before deciding on a course of action and regularly reassess the situation to ensure that your child is making progress. I personally believe everyone involved with the child should participate in the sessions so that the therapy can continue at home, nursery etc. to enable the child to generalise their development in all areas of their lives.

I hope some of you who posted previously return to this thread. We're moving to Dubai next month and I have a 2 year old with some social delays. We're having him reevaluated here before our departure, but I suspect he may need some OT to work on group play, sharing and social interaction. What centers do you recommend? It looks like our insurance will cover services through Healthcare City and Medcare, but it sounds like maybe these types of services are offered through private clinics in Dubai? Feeling a little overwhelmed in sorting this all out. Thanks! Hi Meagle I have been recommended Kids in Motion which is in Healthcare City that offer OT. However I don't have any personal experience at this centre. You are lucky that your insurance covers OT, my insurance considered this is educational and doesn't cover it. If you have any question on my experience on special needs in Dubai including therapy and schools, please email me on dubaimetro2006 at gmail dot com

Thanks for everyone reply. She has already had hearing, eye and even blood test and everything is clear. The speech therapist told me that my DD has sensory issues and if she doesn't have OT than her speech will not improve. I have been told that 10 hours is the min hour for ABA therapy, but I have request to reduce the hours to 8 hours which they haven't reply me and it had been 2 weeks already. Therefore now I am considering changing the centre. Hi :), you wouldnt see an OT for help with sensory issues, you'd see an OT who has an additional qualification as a sensory integrationist.therapist. The two are different and before sensory integration was carried out a sensory profile would have to be done. There are lots of sharks in the water here when it comes to special needs, just make sure that before you part with your cash - you know why you are parting with it. Please dont be panicked into lining up one therapy after another for your child because quite often the best thing for them is the love, patience, and common sense of their family. MY son is 21 and severly autistic, he also has tourettes and additional mental health problems - he's never been to school and the only therapy he had was sensory stuff when I took him to the UK for 3 months to a private clinic - they showed me what to do with him as part of his sensory diet. Its not the end of the world if a child doesnt have therapies because quite often the therapies are just professionals doing what most parents have the common sense to work our for themselves. edited by DesertRose1958 on 13/07/2012

Dubai Community Health Center +971 43953939. It is an excellent place, with plenty of caring specialists depending on what your child will need. They are on Jumeira Road, close to Beach Park (Jumeirah 2/3). My DS has been going there for his dyslexia, he sees an OT (Dr Bakti) and a learning specialist and he has made huge progress. Go and talk to them as soon as you arrive in Dubai. If your insurance / employer covers the cost, it is well worth mentioning their name. It helps you getting a slot as the demand is very high.

HI starsouthern , sorry I dont do OT,, I work with a great girl from SA that is an OT so will ask her for you,, I just do behaviour and ABA.. there are lots of exercises you can do with your son though, does the school not recommed an OT?? Thanks RR would really appreciate that as most centers I've contacted are not interested as it's not enough work. His teacher was concerned as he was taking too long to write, she did suggest we get him evaluated as she thought it might be a learning problem. So had him tested and he tested at above average-superior in most things apart from his visual processing, which was average. So we are going to a behavioral omphamologist for that in June but the therapist did recommend one or two sessions of OT as she said he hasn't been taught to form letters correctly, holds the pensil too tight and uses too much of his arm to write. She gave us a few things to do at home which help but she said as she's not an OT so she can't help with the muscle use. The centers I've contacted want him to come in for 8hrs a week minimum for 10 weeks at dhs 450 an hr. 1 we don't have 8 hrs a week to spare between school, sports and 2 we don't have that kind of money. The initial therapist said she thought he'd only need two or three hrs max. edited by starsouthern on 12/05/2012

Hi All We have just started OT & ST for your DD 33mths. She has had epilipsy since14mths and been on various medicinces. In March this year she underwent surgery to remove a malformation in her brain that was causing the epilipsy. Due to the epilipsy and meds her development is delayed. We have just started 1 hr of OT & 3 hrs of ST per week. As we have just started its hard to say if that is too much or not enough. Since surgery she has shown great development so we are hoping that with the therapy things will move forward rapidly. so far the center has been good but early days yet - overall though we confident in them and comfortable. i guess time will tell. Cost wise i think all centers are pretty much the same per hour. I think you should have a look at other centers - just to see what options you have. Ranches Rose - what exactly is ABA? and what type of behaviour therapy do you cover? Is this privately or through a center? Missymoo - can you email me on dubaimetro2006 at gmail dot com? I would like to know which centre is your DD in. Thanks.

ummm I think maybe you should look at other centers..... possibly 10 hours of ABA therapy for a child with low functioning autisum is standard but NOT for a child with general develpomental delays... I have one client with delays and she has 4 hours a week and my other little boy has 6 hours!! these children also fit in OT and ST !! if the speech therapsit cant help you at the moment them maybe drop her and do the OT, the problem is with these centers is they dont realise that all these therapys cost lots of money :( If you have been having them for a while and not seeing much improvement them I would re assess what you might need for your DD .... do you know any other mums that can offer you advice of places they have used?? if not and you want to just have a chat then let me know and I will see if I can help you ;) Raches Rose - My email address is dubaimetro2006 at gmail dot com. Please give me an email and we can chat more in detail.

It sounds as if you are having plenty of hours.. you need to decided what you need and want for your DD.... OT can be helpful if there are fine motor or sensory issues, so maybe change some ABA sessions into OT, and research vision therapy, see if it something you really do want! I must admit that a few years ago Dubai was way behind the UK and other countries that offered early intervention, but now it seems that there are centers springing up everywhere offering all kids of strange therapy's that will help your child and cost a fortune!!! seems to be the latest way for companies to make money here now :( and parents pay because 'some' of these places make the parents feel sooooo pressured into doing what they say 'is best for the child'... parents are easy prey as we all want to feel we are doing the best for our children but please research everything and then if you find someone or something that you trust then stick to that,,, remember, everyone has 'a fantastic idea or new center they have tried' trust your own gut feelings,,, mummys always know best :)

My DD is 4 and a half years old. She is currently having 10 hours of ABA therapy and 2 hours of speech therapy. And I am being pressure to add OT and vision therapy. She has been having ABA therapy for a year and speech therapy for 6 months, there is progress but not great progress, so they pressure me to add more hours. Also she attend FS1, full mornings.

This is my personal experience of "developmental delay"... When my daughter was about two, the Nursery she attended suggested that she might be autistic. The main reason they gave was that she didn't like to look people in the eye and didn't communicate like the other children. I was devastated. However, I knew that the Nursery staff were not trained medical professionals so I took her to an NHS Child Psychologist (UK). He said that she was not autistic but was probably suffering from "developmental delay". As a result, she went to see a speech therapist once a week for an hour. I made sure that everyone spoke directly to her and didn't ignore her, just because she was silent. When she was four and went to Primary school, the local council awarded her a Statement (basically means the local government pays for member of staff to work with her closely). We feared the worst for her - thinking that she would be trapped in a world with no communication. When she was 4 we noticed that she bumped into things so we got her eyes tested. She needed glasses quite badly. This couldn't have helped. At the age of 4 and a half she suddenly - and I mean suddenly - started talking. It was as if someone had flicked a switch. Then she talked and talked and talked. Now we can't shut her up! She is now a happy, if sometimes stroppy, teenager. No-one at her school knows of her past problems and she is doing well academically. I have asked her about it and she tells me "I didn't need to talk. Everyone did everything for me so I didn't need to ask for anything..." Obviously, every child is different. Above all, get a second opinion. Get their eyes and hearing tested. Trust your instincts and give your child time to find their place in this world.
