So I was a bit bored, and read this thread and out of curiosity did a quick online shop for the items listed, since I don't know what they were exactly this is approximate however if you were to buy these items in: Tescos (UK): you would pay 25 pounds Woolworths (Australia): 69 dollars Netgrocer (US): 63.50 US dollars So basically the UK is a lot cheaper, australia more expensive and the US about the same! Interesting comparison!!!

Wow- none of you guys better move to Australia then! Groceries here are CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP compared to the capital cities there. Example of Brisbane prices at local supermarket: Diet coke bottle 12 aed Loaf of bakery bread 14 aed Chicken breasts 40aed per kilo Nappies 120aed Clothes are much cheaper here, petrol is much cheaper, cars are cheaper, services are cheaper. You won't find too many Aussies complaining about coat of living here (other than school fees and rent!) Because the aussie dollar is so strong, maybe the highest in history vs USD... It certainly cannot only be due to the strength of the Aussie dollar. We lived in Perth a few years back before the dollar started gaining strength and we about died - the cost of many grocery items and other things was almost double what we'd been paying in Canada at the time! I remember paying $20 AUD for a 1 kg bag of grapes one time and about fainted! We moved to the US after leaving Aus and recently here to Dubai - and while some things are more expensive than they were in Houston, they are not nearly as expensive as they were in Perth, and we've found many things (especially breads and baked goods, sodas, etc) that are actually a fair amount cheaper here than in Houston. I think it matters where you shop. I try to find a local version for most things and not only stick to the imported foods at Spinneys. edited by CdnExpat on 16/03/2011 Have to agree with that - I divide the costs of things by three to get a rough comparison (even though the exchange averages about 3.6) and its still waaaaaay cheaper here than in Australia. Goes for food, clothes, appliances etc. The quality however ... I would give my right arm sometimes just to be able to buy fresh food on a weekly basis rather than having to buy every day because what you bought yesterday is now off.

We average 200 dhs a week for the 2 of us-I tend to avoid canned and frozen/ready made meals and make things from scratch so I get change left over to save for a night out. I agree it is much easier to budget here than in Australia-basics like Arabic bread, rice and natural yoghurt are way cheaper here

Right, that's it, I'm using up everything in the fridge and freezer before I next do a grocery shop. No more daily trips to Spinneys for fresh bakery items. Then I'll start watching what I'm buying and save the bills to work out our monthly spend, which at the moment is horrifying compared to the figures mentioned here.. Anyone fancy a goose? It's taking up a lot of room in the freezer. May have to save it for Easter, though!

yup, unfortunately, you either have to live with it, adapt to it or learn to make your own! I find that I shop at at least two different places. C4 is having a sale on baby rice cereal and diapers-so I load up. I hit spinneys on monday's and get meat and fresh veg. C4 for canned goods/dried pasta/tomat/household cleaning products Its time consuming but if I didnt do that I would easily be spending 1000's at spinneys. Out of curiosity what are people's weekly grocery bill? My household is three adults, a baby and dog. I would ay we spend 500-650 weekly, on average. edited by NYCDoll on 16/03/2011 I'd say we're about the same (3 adults and 2 children). It's hard for me to calculate, though, because I get almost daily home delivery which I don't keep track of. DAILY home delivery? 650 a week ? Curious - what are you ordering? I hear about people who get milk etc sent up from some supermarkets near them. Is this what you mean? Do you get everything delivered? edited by spongemonkey on 16/03/2011

I agree, ppl think we are lording it here. The cost of living is high and we do not live large at all. Even then we are constantly trying to get our bills lower. But my dad told me one thing, compromise on whatever else, but not on food. You need that everyday so spend money on good quality stuff within reason (he was not referring to caviar ofcourse). I guess we dont really have a choice here. Quality or not its expensive because most of the goods are imported.

Whole Foods has two stores in London but I've heard they're struggling. Certainly they haven't expanded operations as much as the company initially hoped for. I enjoy Whole Foods but I like Waitrose better and I think that's the reason for WF's lack of success in the UK. There's already Waitroses, plenty of organic produce at Sainsburys and Tescos and all the small markets. Yep, it all sounds about right...I hate when people back home assume living in Dubai is cheap, like we are lording it up over here. Some things, like having helpers is cheaper than back home. And gas is cheaper. But really, food is more expensive here, going out is more expensive-think of what you pay for a drink..or even a diet coke at a hotel bar. And also the pampering stuff i find to be the same price as back home if not more expensive here. I used to get a non funghal pedicure/manicure for 20 bucks, 15 bucks if it was monday-wed. Thats like 80 aed? Whereas here I pay 80 for just a pedicure and its often not that great because the person doing it has no licenses or training... hehe - my FiL was in awe of the Waitrose supermarket here, and went as far as to say "ooo, this puts the UK stores to shame!"... I just couldn't help myself and replied something along the lines of "are you kidding?! A third of the range that's in the UK for twice or 4 times the price?! Don't think so!" For me it's also about being able to trust what you buy. It seems to be getting better here, but still... don't get me started on chicken breasts! Oh how i miss good chicken and meat that doesnt taste gamey! I know what you mean, your FIL would **** himself if he went to like a super walmart or a big whole foods. We've got lovely supermarkets in he UK... and lovely farmer's markets, organic markets... everything. /cry more don't forget, good manicurists...no fungus spreading :) edited by Tallybalt on 16/03/2011

Loved them both - TJ's was very inexpensive. Wholefoods opened in the UK not too long ago.....hoping they will stay and expand. edited by Sue R on 16/03/2011

Geant and Lulus are my favourites, but Carrefour's baking stuff is cheaper than anywhere else. I only get stuff rarely from Waitrose any more, and even then only the Waitrose own branded stuff (more reliable I find)... and then good old Al Maya for the "pop to the shops" bits and wonderful, scrummy pork sausages! Beacuse of the rota, I work out my monthly groceries, which is always between 1500-2250 per month, with maybe another 500 for household consumables (nappies, washing powder, loo roll...). We're a family of 4.

I should have just gone to Lulu Hypermarket. I needed to pepperoni so thought I would go to SPinneys and finish everything. Bad idea. Shudder. AnonDubai: I know nappies are ridiculously priced here. But I rechecked the price for the same at Lulu and it was AED 4 cheaper! Sigh, my mistake I guess. 2 adults, 1 maid and 1 baby, our bills are AED 500ish a week.

We are 3 adults, 3 kids and a baby and I easily spend dhs 1200 a week! Every Sunday, I go to Co-op first (dhs 600-700) for packed goods and veggies/fruit and then to Spinneys for bread, meat and some small items (dhs 500)...

You should try going to Carrefour for most of your shopping. I keep our budget under control by buying most of our food at Carrefour and the prices really aren't bad. There's loads of lovely French packaged goods as well and I find the cheese counter to be better than Spinneys and with excellent prices.
