... or does beauty therapists and receptionists calling you "Honey" and "Sweetie" drive you mad!

It really grates on me and I want to say, "please don't do that, it's really annoying" but I'm afraid I'll come over like a miserable cow.

Any suggestions on how to subtly get them to stop!

I'm with you on that one Fairfield! and also when they call me 'dear' GRRRRRRRRR I dont mind the honey and the sweetie (cabin crew for 12 years. never remeber all their names!) but the "dear" is just so patonising! I don't have a problem with "dear" (makes me think of old grannies in the UK!) when it's in person, but I do find it a bit strange in emails - like "Hello dear" from complete strangers who I don't know and haven't seen before! The 'dear' from complete strangers, like the ones that want to sell me something, or at a beauty salon is what I don't like. Also when people know my name and we are not THAT friendly and they say 'hello dear' edited by outheredxb on 03/11/2011

I once had a college professor who called me 'Lady' (I was all of 20 at the time!) but as he was rather old school and I was in an otherwise all-male class, it was kind of fitting. He was ex-military so used to say "yes maam" to me whenever I asked him something! Some people have it as a habit I suppose. I'm used to lots of things now ('love' from the British girls, "hon/honey" from the Aussies) but I must say that "mamsirrrrrrrrr" really gets on my nerves and/or sets me cracking up!!! I always want to say, which do you think I am, a Mam or a Sir???

I honestly don't mind being called m' dear or love. The only expression I hate which is a Scottish one is being called "hen" Having said that my dearly departed FIL called me that but there was a kind of slant to it which made it acceptable. He also called me "flower"!! :) That's cute! I would feel like I'm 5 years old again! I call my 6m old DD flower:) I have been called "love" in the UK which I found so weird - if it hadn't been a woman calling me that I might have taken it the wrong way at 16 years old lol

Actually I don't mind the 'dear' thing, especially if it's from someone Arabic, as I think it falls into the translation thing, but sweetie/honey is so affected. Grrr. Glad it's not only me. I was recently called 'miss' by a very patronising sales assistant at Bloomingdales. My immediate response was 'are you taking the p##). Although thinking about it a waiter called me Lady the other day and I though it was really sweet. I'm fickle.

I found this very common when I was a tourist in England. I was often called "Love" by people whom I did not even know and found it strange.

I think they are trying hard to be nice and friendly. How would they know that a specific term, back at your home country, refers to something that might buther you. Dear is the only term that is considered formal in any English course or even online application. you use dear sir, dear madam while addressing strangers in a polite way! I wouldn't consider such words as annoying, I admit I would tell the girl not to call me that again but wouldn't really buther myself with the cultures conflict!

Well in Italy it is different, they can call you "signora" (implying you are married or beyond a certain unspecified age) or "signorina", meaning you look young. How they choose to call you can determine the success or the failure of a whole day, so in this case it is not big deal for me how people behave here :):):)

And there I was worried about Greece defaulting on its debt. Perhaps I need to get out more

I hate madam even though they call all females that here. A madam in my country is not a good name to be called ( if you know what i mean) I dont like Mam either ( That is how you address the Queen of England) I ask them to call me by my name but they won't incase they get told off by their madam
