My husband just got pulled over by the police and he didn't have his license with him. The police man told he will need to present his license to bur Dubai police station within 24 hours. However my husband hasn't misplaced his license and can't find it. Can we just got to the RTA tomorrow morning and get a new one? And will they accept this?

Hello Ladies, Just a quick update, me and DH went to the RTA at co-op on Thursday, he just needed a photocopy of his passport and visa. (he also took a copy of his license just in case). New License was re-issue in 10 minutes. Then went to the police station at Al Barsha presented his license. Paid the fine and off we went. Thank god everything went very smoothy....

Once a week you should reverse up against a wall and check your lights in the mirror If it really matters to you then you should do it every day, shouldn't you? Faults can develop at any time. If you only do it once a week then you could easily be driving around for 6 days with blown lights.

...On a slightly different note because I am not perfect and I have been stopped more than once with out my licence. I have replaced mine twice. Tut tut do I ever learn? The fine is fifty dirhams I think but you must pay any and all fines on your car first. It takes fifteen minutes. The staff were fab and I left feeling good. Last week sore Arab woman drove into the back of me with no licence and the police were lovely to her. Accidents happen. Peace out! I also had to file a police report about my lost license before I could be issued a new one. Both getting the police report and then the new license were amazingly straightforward processes, but it was a lot more than 15 mins and 50dhs. :) Like all things Dubai, it seems to depend on the official on the desk on the day. edited by Green-ish on 22/10/2011

Once a week you should reverse up against a wall and check your lights in the mirror. same as oil/fluid checks. I check mine by looking at their reflection on the chrome bumper bar of the landcruiser that is 10 cm away from the back of my car doing 160km an hour. *like* (lol...scary, but *like* ;) )

Wow how I wish I was perfect and never lost anything. And wow wee how I wish I was super duper perfect and checked everything every time I got into my car. Because of all the crimes in this country including trade in human beings I feel the two we need to be strictest on are tail lights and driving licences. Once they get those criminals off the road we can all rest easier. Phew thank goodness those cops are on the same page as you. I've had all the lights at the back go before, including the brake lights, and I had no Idea. It was only when my OH followed me one day that he pointed it out. If I ever see people with one or all lights out at the back I try to tell them at the next traffic light as this really is something you can't know. The idiots on the road without lights on at all are a different story, now that most new cars have illuminated dials, people forget to put thier headlights on..... Once a week you should reverse up against a wall and check your lights in the mirror. same as oil/fluid checks. WOW i never knew you could check your oil & fluids by just reversing up to a wall, thanks for the great tip! :\:

I would check to make sure the police now accept a photocopy of the license. A colleague was told that it wasn't a few years ago, but the rules may have changed (sort of like using a photocopy of your passport and trying to exit the country perhaps). That said, I keep a copy of my passport with me when I travel in case the original is lost or stolen - I've got something on me to show the police/embassy.

Well I appreciate your response - I suppose it's a timely lesson for us all to check our cars really - especially with the fog we've had recently - look at this as something GOOD your husband has done in reminding all of us to check our own cars. Safe flight home anyway x

Sorry but I do need to ask something - you've been here 3 YEARS and yet you're not familiar with the rules here? A bad way to leave Dubai? How about bad of your husband to drive a car that's not been maintained properly? I am aslo glad he has been stopped. Too often we moan about the police not enforcing the laws that do exist over here - it's good to see them doing something. I'm sorry if this leaves a bad taint on your time here in Dubai but maybe it will remind you to read up on local laws of the land you live in and look after a vehicle on the road. Thanks redlesley for your response, not making any excuses but my husband thought his lights were actually working it was a honest mistake.

I understand it is not nice, but there is no need to panic. Haven't been in touch with the police too much yet, but there will always be a way to prove you actually have a license. So going into jail... really??? ;) well, it is a crime, to drive without a license. but not jailable.

By the way, why did he get pulled over ;) Because his lights at the back were not working. Thank you ladies for your help I am just hoping that they don't ask for a police report. I don't want to even think about what would happen? Do u think that he could go to jail for this..... Ok now I am starting to panic again Sorry to jump in here, but it is nice to see the police actually pulling people over with dogdy lights, sick of seeing people drive around in the dusk/dark with such awful lights - so dangerous, for themselves and others.

they should give you time to go and retrieve your licence before they fine you. but you should always have it on your person.

he will get some fines, and everyone knows, that having no license on you, is a MASSIVE no-no, but no jail time (unless he gets cocky with the cops when he goes down!)......

When my boss lost his license last year the RTA told him he had to go to report it to police and get a report. It may have changed by now. Also, you should always have your license on you as its an instant 200 or 250 fine!

Wow, didnt think they would pull someone over for that! Nah, its not something he would go to jail for. Fingers crossed he will get a new liscence tomorrow and all will be well. Worst case scenario if he doesnt get it tomorrow he will have to explain that he lost it and hasnt got round to getting a new one.

Just got a new license and my issue date is 1991! As Plum says, it is from date you got first registered for your license.
