Just be careful with spraying perfume around the place onboard though, as mentioned it can set asthmatics off and a strong EDP can waft around for hours- not to mention getting in people's eyes- so if you must just do small sprays onto yourself. Also EDT is better and try for 'au fraiche' or light fragrances rather than woody or heavy musky orientals if you can avoid them. (Also avoid hair spray in the lavs or you might find yourself greeted by a crew member busting the door open with a fire extinguisher- they can set off optical smoke detectors . Once did the above only to scare the heck out of a poor lady just trying to do her hair... LOL)

As far as I remember from my freighting days, perfume= toiletry=ok, air freshener=household=not ok. But a pump spray like a 'room' or 'pillow' spray might be alright. Just think anything toiletry-related, you should be right. So, a mini spray like those Victoria's Secret scented ones should be fine and work as an air freshener. What I do sometimes also (I travel with my own blanket & pillow) is spray them before I leave with a nice room spray then pack them in a large ziplock bag. Keeps the scent on and I can snuggle into it or create a 'stink shiled' if I'm sitting next to someone smelly :p

So my question is to those in the business, (airline that is not gas) can I take my own personal airfreshener or fragrance spray to use on board in case of offending fellow fliers, is it allowed? Really don't relish the prospect of being suffocated by gas again for 12 hours next month. I always carry perfume with me when i fly. You are allowed 50ml in a sealable plastic bag in your hand luggage :-)

As far as I'm aware, air fresheners are not part of the exempted 'damgerous goods' allowed to be carried in hand or checked luggage (like for example, hair spray etc) BUT another way you can get round smells is a little solid perfume, scented hand cream or tiger balm dabbed just below your nostrils... the added bonus of vaseline etc in the nose is it can trap germs before they make it into your sinuses... Thanks for the tips...maybe I could take a small non aerosol pump spray of perfume, really don't think a solid one would cut it if next flight is anything like the last one!

This post has cracked me up, thanks ladies I haven't laughed so much in a long time. However, I feel my practical nature stirring and was thinking that along with the blanket, neck brace, ear plugs & eye mask maybe I should add a Sars mask to my flight kit. Will that protect me from "crop spraying"? gotta love it! edited by Get me out of here! on 29/11/2011

Haha this thread cracks me up! It was always hilarious to see the ground staff's face when we opened the door especially at the end of a 14/15 hour flight - most of them stayed as far awhile as they could so they didn't get the initial hit of the stench!! The nicest thing was walking outside to the hit of fresh air after a flight (no matter how cold it was outside!)... bliss. Had to use the air freshner on more than one occassion but what is just as bad as one's bodily smells is when one has taken their shoes off or has stinking BO (worst is when you sit next to them). I actually hate to admit that my husband (who is crew) loves garlic but I do try to keep his intake to a minimum especially for a long flight. I will make sure even more so now!!

(not counting the ones that get out while you sleep lol) Oh god, so you mean it might not have been the man across the aisle and I may not be the lady I thought I was???????? . After a long (12hr+) flight, we used to fight over which ground staff member would be meeting the flight- it's always horrible opening up the door and we'd stand well to the side! lol Yep my daughter has said the same :D edited by DesertRose1958 on 29/11/2011

"can't be helped" well no it cannot, I know from experience but what CAN be helped is if people know it is coming to go to an appropriate place (like the loo) to get it out. Problem is a lot of people are too lazy to do so... (not counting the ones that get out while you sleep lol) as a crew I often get hte bloating problem expecially as a woman but I never am so rude as to just let it out! I go to the loo or as far away from others if the loos are full, never right near someone! Sue yes okay I get that someone might have asthmas but I don't know that unless someone tells me. If it's that bad that someone's perfume or freshener is going to be a najor problem then likely that person would need medical advice to travel anyway. If someone asked me not to spray it of course I would stop. But until I'm told otherwise, the comfort of the majority rules and bad smells are not to be tolerated. After a long (12hr+) flight, we used to fight over which ground staff member would be meeting the flight- it's always horrible opening up the door and we'd stand well to the side! lol

I've always thought it was something that couldnt be helped at 37,000 feet due to your innards getting all squashed up and things just having to fight for more space, in a very confined space, with the obvious results. Not that I would know personally of course cos Im a lady. But having read this thread I really do wish I'd pinned a note to myself the other day en-route to london that said something along the lines of - It wasnt me, honest, it really was him across the aisle. And it was! Honest Guv! edited by DesertRose1958 on 29/11/2011

I must say I do find people making smells revolting especially if it is someone who I have the misfortune to sit near, and luckily I am not easily affected in that way by what I eat - but as horrible as it is, they can't really help it can they?

No such rule with Emirates, but I never cook anything with garlic in it, if DH has a flight the next day.

works both ways though - nothing more nauseating than a cabin crew leaning over you stinking of garlic...and we once had a steward whose cologne was so overpowering it almost brought on my asthma !!! (as would someone waving an air freshener around ) lol

Di, it's been going on for years!! We actually had a passenger who kept coming to the galley to let his fluffy off the chain, eventually I got so nauseated by it I firmly told him that the toilet is the place for such things not our galley as we have to eat & work there!!! disgusting!!! they were really foul too! He tried to pretend it wasn't him and threatened to report me but it was no coincidence that the eight times he appeared in our galley we also got gassed!! >_< Sadly some people think it's ok, it should be even more unacceptable because we are in a confined space!!! I've literally just about passed out walking down the cabin and entering someone's personal little 'stink cloud'- people don't really notice it as much at seat level because for some reason it tends to float around- right at about cabin crew head height. So if you see a poor crew walking along ten suddenly make a horrid face- have a giggle because you now know what's just happened!!! I go like a choo-choo train with the air freshener now- have never been told not to- if someone has a problem with it they can feel free to let me know, until then I will deffo spray away!! especially if there is a repeat offender sometimes being really obvious about it shames them into stopping!! ::D

I am sure I remember a time when airlines did'nt serve garlic in meals at all, to passenger or crew, I always thought this was due to the garlic smell itself rather than any after effects. I notice that these days airline meals do contain garlic which although a problem for me as I don't like it, I can avoid it by a different meal choice. However what is unavoidable is the way many passengers feel free to let rip like theres no tomorrow. Last time coming back on emirates on a 12 hours flight the cabin was full of people who appeared to have lost control over their nether regions. It got so bad I asked the steward to spray the cabin, he said sorry, I understand the problem, but we cannot because some people are allergic to the perfume in air fresheners! Is this behaviour now a socially accpepted norm on board, perhaps I am out of touch with the times? Not looking forward to the 12 hours flight again next month. :(

lol how else do you think some flights arrive early.. .all the extra gas on board!! ;) LOL I'd never stoop to crop dusting but I remember one occasion where a cabin crew had eaten a rather fragrant meal. the captain was a bit of a b@stard (for a 6 day trip!!) so she dusted the cockpit which got a frantic call from the pilots asking someone to please bring up the spray. I went up as requested only to open the door to find them both wearing 02 masks!!! :p

Brings a whole new meaning to cockpit turbulance. believe me, when you're stuck in a cockpit with a flatulent pilot, it's no laughing matter. My airline used to give us a garlic ciabatta at every mealtime, even on the 5am shift. The stench was unbearable! The UK flights were the worst as there'd always be baked beans with the meals too....

is that a country??? really? I went to Djibouti national day...... was weird celebrating a national day of a country you had no knowledge of 20 minutes before...... Apparently it's a country. With lots of gorillas and elephants. I once knew a guy who was offered the chance to be US ambassador to Djibouti. He turned it down - said it wasn't worth being called ambassador to live in that country! ETA: Apologies to any Djiboutians on the board, I'm sure your country is very nice and that man was kind of horrid, you wouldn't have wanted him there anyways ... edited by guinness on 28/11/2011
