What is it at the moment or is it just me? Are taxi drivers becoming more and more sleazy? Three or four times over the past couple of weeks, I have been propositioned and/or grilled about my s*x life and whether my DH can 'manage'. I try and laugh it off but honestly, it is wearing a bit thin now. I get taxis because it is easier and cheaper but now, I am not so sure.

No, I don't want to be your special friend, yes I am happy and yes, my DH can 'manage' thank you.

I want to get in a cab, not have small talk (because that also invariably involves asking whether I have kids - no I don't and then we have the whole 'why not' rigmarole. Er, because I don't like or want them thanks) and get to work as quickly as possible.

The western couple, who had doctors certify they did not do "it" but still were sentenced on the basis of a taxi driver watching them for a few minutes, yea sure very believable... They have appealed and their sentence was reduced but upheld - am sure there is more to this than was in the press - and the "lady" in question has sold her story to the tabloids. edited by Splinters on 22/05/2013 I think a lot of us would do the same if we had over 150,000 aed in legal bills to pay and no employer here would touch us with a barge pole When I was new to Dubai, I made the HUGE mistake of getting in the front seat of a taxi, as I don't like car back seats. The driver asked me many personal questions, told me he liked my breasts, that he wanted a kiss, then drove me round the back of the marina mall, where it was empty, and grabbed one of my boobs. Unfortunately for him I do MMA and Krav Maga so this resulted in a swift and hard elbow to his face. However, I wish I'd reported it. Sadly I find a significant proportion of taxi drivers incredibly rude. I walk to work for 20mins in my heels because I don't want to have to deal with rude taxis who don't want to do a 15aed journey

And just to add...........i think I'd rather the sleazy driver than the idiot who tried to share his favourite music with me, whilst speeding along SZ Rd. When he took both hands off the wheel in order to wave in time with the music I nearly died of fright. Or the lunatic who missed the turning for Springs and maniacly drove my daughter and I round and round on Emirates Road for an hour in spite of our pleading to be let out at various gas stations..............or the poor man who picked me up for an early airport run and kept falling asleep at the wheel.

Tell them where you are going and that's it. You must be doing something that is clearly sending the wrong message and inviting this kind of conversation. I think you are being unfair..........and not a little unkind. When I was in Dubai and again in AD I had taxi drivers make inappropriate comments...............I think one has to take into account that some men working in UAE come from cultures where they are not used to being in the company of women and hence do not have the same sense of boundaries. And I am a grumpy old granny................and hardly likely to be sending out any come hither signals. But for it to happen 3 times out of 4?????? to the same person Just the sort of comment I come to expect - a debate turning personal, unnecessarily so in my opinion. I get a cab to and from work every day and have only recently been experiencing this uncomfortable behavior. I sit in the back, switch my kindle on and certainly do not invite conversation. Complaints to RTA it is sadly from now on.

If you are worried about the regular Dubai taxis then have a look at Careem. They are slightly more expensive but for my piece of mind, especially if I have been out drinking I use them. All the drivers are tracked and no money changes hands as it is changed to a credit card on your account. Meaning no lost wallets as the driver will be traced but more importantly 'everything' is logged by the company. Sorry not sure how this "quote" thing works....anyhow, can highly recommend Careem. Have used them a few times and always early & pleasant driver,

Like some others, I've never experienced sleazy drivers or rude shop assistants ( seen plenty folks being rude to shop assistants though). Last taxi I took the driver was lovely. He was telling me they work either 4am to 4pm or 4 pm to 4am and 7 days a week. If it's almost time for his shift to end and he gets flagged down for a trip which means he will be late back, he has to decide between getting fined for being late back or getting fined if the customer complains that he won't take them. Not an easy life.

I never have these issues of inappropriate chats. They do chat, but we always end up talking about traffic and other stuff. They can focus on the road while having a friendly chat, the thing that annoys me is when they're on the phone the entire trip. And I tell them that. Yes but you are a covered muslim woman and would be treated like a 'sister'. They would not dare. And these taxi drivers should know that is makes no difference. If they don't know how to behave, they need to be reported, and women who experience this HAVE to report. UAE has zero tolerance when it comes to harassment. Plus, these men should remember to LOWER THEIR GAZE. Sorry but I have no sympathy for men with this kind of way of thinking.

I can't say I've ever had a rude taxi driver and only one that I've had a couple of times who wants to chat (lovely old soul who worked for the British Army in Abu Dhabi for over 25 years) I'm always politie to taxi drivers as I am to everyone and find it disgusting that anyone could come out with the statement "You cannot be polite with a taxi driver. Where they come from, a woman out alone is a loose woman......end of, oh and in their opinion your DH does not care about your welfare." To me that sounds racist.

Outspan, I think you need to treat the taxi drivers as you would treat anyone else. I also chat with them sometimes, they work long hours, are away from their families and have to put up with a lot of abuse throughout their shift. I don't think it's a bad thing to treat them like fellow human beings and have a simple conversation. BUT, being asked personal questions about your husband is just wrong (as it would be in any other situation). I have never came across this but would definitely tell the driver it was none of his business, to keep driving and not entertain any further chat. Like every walk of life, some are good, some are bad. I don't think you can say that all taxi drivers are the same. Hear Hear!

Been here eight years and neither my husband nor I have a car so use taxis a lot. Can honestly say I have never had any problems with a taxi driver here-apart from one who got somewhat lost as it was his first day and he had just arrived in Dubai and been given no training about the roads so didn't have a clue which way to go. I don't engage them in conversation-they should be concentrating on the roads anyway-just give clear directions where I need to go and that is it. edited by wuffles on 22/05/2013

Its not generalizing if you say that 1 or 2 in 10 drivers are this way. To compare drivers in Dubai vs other workers, they are actually quite well off, the average driver makes much more than a cashier or sales staff, sometimes 2 to 3 times more a month. Drivers in Northern emirates are less well off.

iv never had a taxi driver try and talk to me.... unless he hears me speak and finds out I speak the same language as he does ... and everytime they have refused to take the fare ....only in respect of the common language.... iv refused every time ofcourse... these prople earn meagre wages and still some have a heart of gold... I don't think I'ts fair to make generalizations. ... just dont talk to them when if they try and make small talk. ... if some one harrases you. . get out of the taxi and report them... sleaze balls shouldn't be allowed to geet sway with it..they just give the rest of those poor taxi drivers a bad name

Outspan, why would you put up such questions and comments from any man you don't know? If a man spoke to me like that in a bar I'd tell him to shut it and walk away. If a man spoke to me like when he was working, as a taxi driver or anything else, and I was a customer I'd report him. If a black cab driver in London said such things I'd get out his cab and report him immediately. I'm probably a bit sensitive to such things as many years ago I was attacked by a London mini cab driver (stupid me for getting in it, luckily I was able to get out and run) but I think there are quite sinister overtones to any driver who would make such comments.

I've had cab drivers try to chat with me quite a few times but I would say that these times are lesser compared to cabbies who do their job and don't utter a word. I think it also depends on how you react to them speaking to you about personal things, whenever this happens with me I just flat out ignore them and they get the message. OP, it may not be in your nature to be rude but I think if the situation calls for it then you need to be to the point with them, because some people just can't take a hint. They will only invade your personal space if you allow them to. If all else fails just pepper spray the a$$h*l3 -_-

A taxi driver was pushing me for my phone number even in my first week of arrival in Dubai 13 years ago. They have been doing this for ages. I now just give my destination and play with my cellphone to look busy and avoid chitchat. They sure are very nosey and the moment you are nice and talkative to them they think you are 'interested' in them.

You cannot be polite with a taxi driver. Where they come from, a woman out alone is a loose woman......end of, oh and in their opinion your DH does not care about your welfare. I am a bit shocked. Not be polite to a taxi driver???? why because they are dirty menials from third world countries???? Yes, where they come from is different but that does not mean one should treat them badly/rudely/without respect. Maybe a few in those thousands have got the wrong impression about western women but then with all the tum tum about the western couple in the back of taxi it can be expectd from people who may not be as worldly as you. You can be firm and let him know you dont want interaction. The western couple, who had doctors certify they did not do "it" but still were sentenced on the basis of a taxi driver watching them for a few minutes, yea sure very believable... What that couple did has nothing to do with their mentality Some of them have been harassing women and even boys since a long time ago and that event happened only few months back. I remember as a child even boys in mid-late teens wouldnt be comfortable riding taxis alone (not Dubai but in Abu Dhabi) because of what many drivers did or talked about. They just "try it on" with women they think will not react. And the numbers are definitely more than few in a thousand, more like 1 in every 10. As for the sudden increase, this is what typically happens, be it sleazy behavior or being rude to passengers or other antics: 1 or 2 drivers do it, and then when they see they are not punished for it, the word spreads and more and more drivers do it. They are very well connected given that most of them eat together during their shift breaks, and it does not take long for a word about what is being punished and what is not to spread edited by Arch on 22/05/2013 edited by Arch on 22/05/2013
