CP, after 9 months on the ground I have a 9.5 hour flight on Sunday :(
I think I will try the glass of water (sure as heck won't be water, though) trick.
Some of these tips are great. I'm also a nervous flyer and sometimes feel like I am the only one awake in the cabin as everyone is fast asleep on a particular night flight we do. It's really quite freaky.
I wish I could sleep. Will try some of these.
CP, a colleague of mine is a reeeeeally nervous flyer, and she has had some good things to say about a book and app called Soar (terrible name). Not sure about the book so much, but the app is designed to be used whilst in flight and has tools/activities to use when you are particularly anxious during the flight. Eg. when it's turbulent, have a glass of water in front of you and watch how much the water actually moves (not much, because it reality the plane is only moving a little), and also a g-force meter which you can turn on in turbulence so that you can see how little force there really is.
Her fear of flying is the type that stops you from going on interesting holidays because the thought of the flight is too terrifying. But, she's found Soar pretty useful.
If you looking for something natural, try Rescure Remedy. Found some at a pharmacy in MoE (near Carrefour). It wont knock you out, but with a few glasses of wine it should do the trick.
Try not to sleep for long hours a night before your travel date and I do complete my packing hours prior flight time with tidying up to exhaust energy...
Even then, when i sleep and wake up its usually for 20minutes,I'm assuming being able to sleep for hours depends on Nature ,thou the flat bleds in the business cabin works too.
Good Luck and enjoy your flight!
i have tablets called Kalms and i've also heard of others called sleep calms which are a natural sleeping aid, might try some of those
i have panadol night but sometimes if i take those i wake up feeling really groggy, so if i dont manage to sleep on them on the plane i know i'll feel awful from them
maybe a couple of calms and couple of drinks might do the trick!
i cant take a window seat because i get up a lot because i get so uncomfortable... wish they'd put the foot rests back in to make it more bearable
Is there such thing as a blow up foot rest that you could get? Or maybe get a blow up cushion / neck pillow that you could put your feet on to make it more comfortable. I'm quite short and I miss the foot rests too. I end up using my hand luggage as a foot rest most of the time and everything gets squashed inside the bag!!!!
hahhaa i do the same and everything in the bag is so squashed by the end of it
These work a charm

Were you able to buy this inflatable foot rest in dubai? I am also looking for them.

My favourite trick for getting some sleep on the plane is always pack a very good pair of noise cancelling headphones and some downloaded meditation apps on my phone. I used to be a nervous flyer and find that listening to meditation has the dual effect of calming me and sending me to sleep. I also use ear plugs under the headphones to maximize the noise interference of the plane and other passengers.
In the absence of 5mg valium and/or a business class seat, I find that I can get a lot more comfortable if I can prop my feet up.
Also, noise cancelling headphones make a huge difference!! I use in-ear buds as my ears get sore when I have full cover headphones on for an extended period of time, and I leave the cancelling on even if there's no music. You don't realise how loud a plane is until it's blissfully drowned out.
yes i always take ear plugs or my in-ear buds as i also cant wear the ones that go over your whole ear, my ears feel like they're bruised after a couple hours. I thought i was the only one!!
it definitely does make a huge difference with the noise!

Try changing your sleep pattern a few days before the flight so that you can sleep during the day before the flight. If your work allows, try going to bed every night a few hours later than usual, and wake up later. In such a way you won't be tired on the night of your flight. But, honestly, night flights are the worst. Ends up in two wasted days because of all the recovery after those.
Window seat, neck pillow, eye cover, some relaxing tunes on my iphone, a couple of glasses of wine before boarding and a herbal sleeping tablet from the pharmacy.
Not sure how you feel about sleeping tablets? Maybe see a GP or even go to the chemist - they might have a natural remedy?
I don't think they will prescribe medical sleeping tabs for flying in Dubai
I ended up in hospital with a back injury and even then they wouldn't prescribe a muscle relaxant just diclofenac
Hi Ladies...
Would love to hear your tips for getting some sleep on an overnight economy flight
I always struggle with this and i have a night flight coming up and would love to get at least 2 or 3 hours in but i always really battle & end up arriving absolutely shattered
any thing you do that helps you get some rest in that uncomfortable upright position?
thank you :)
Upgrade to business :-) That is the only way I can sleep as I am flat. I cannot sleep sitting up and feel your pain
I wish i could, but i booked the emirates staff discount tickets through a friend, so i cant even upgrade using my miles
the only bad thing about those cheap fares, that you cant upgrade or get air miles. But suppose you cant complain when you're paying such a low fare
i get so jealous of people that are asleep the whole way sitting up... i just cant do it!
I have only slept once through an entire flight
I took 2 paracetamol night and had 3 G&Ts and woke up upon landing.
I also dislike people who sleep all the way through. I doze off but then wake up thinking hours have passed when only 10 minutes has gone by
