I am so sad and spechless that i can not type properly :( :(

Few days back there was this news on a girl saved by a policeman as she was about to jump from her balcony, and now she falls again, this time its a sad ending.

How how how could the parents not have learnt from the first experience which happened so recently?

Abu Dhabi: A three-year-old girl plunged to her death on Wednesday from a fifth floor apartment at Airport Road in Abu Dhabi.

Four weeks ago, the same girl was rescued by a policeman who noticed her leaning out of a window at her home in the capital, a police spokesman said on Wenesday.

"The child, an Arab national, was saved by the grace of Allah and the instincts of a brave and alert policeman on January 5. The policeman saw the girl hanging out from the window of the kitchen in her residence when her parents were away at work," the spokesman said.

He said officers broke down the apartment door to save the girl who was dangling her legs out of the window. She had been left alone at the house.

"Yesterday, an emergency unit was deployed to the site of the accident immediately upon receiving the report, only to discover the girl dead on the pavement," said Lt Colonel Faisal Al Shamari, director of the Child Protection Centre in the Ministry of Interior.

What on earth is wrong with these parents? And the police gave them a warning. How can they go to work, lock the girl in the apartment and then this happens. I feel so sad about this. Very very very sad indeed and amazing the number of people who leave their children alone even westerners who we think in today's world should know better pop to the shop if children asleep. The police gave them a warning and it appears they had someone to look after the child therefore assuming they did heed the warning but may not have sufficient knowledge to know to keep all windows and doors shut/locked to avoid accidents. Not everyone thinks or understands risks unfortunately. Education education education, in what ever formate is required will help prevent these children being left alone .In addition support , be it child care facilities at affordable prices for those that really need them in the area one lives. Just remember one of these higher profile cases of children left alone when parents were socialising ( not out working) "The Madeline McCann case". it is also very very very sad. I learned last summer 2011 there are many many children here left without supervision as parents cannot afford supervision for long holidays and both parents need to work to survive. There is a massive need for cheap affordable summer camps and other holiday camps to keep these children occupied and safer with good adult supervision.

Does anybody know of a number where I could lodge a complaint of a child being left unsupervised at home. This neighbour of mine (excuse the impolite language) has been leaving her child alone at home since the age of 4. Child is 7 years now. They are 'religious' (idiotic zealots I would say) who go for meditation or something like that and leave him alone to add to the time he's alone when parents are at work. The child is sensible enough to not jump out of a window I guess, but what if there was an emergency like a fire. He's given house keys and he's allowed to go to other kids homes when alone. The child already has emotional problems I can see - he cries easily for the minutest of things and gets 'bullied' a bit...an he seems to want that...he'll do it for the attention. Btw if you are this boy's mum - please wake up! Maybe put your child in day care or at a reliable baby sitters and your meditation prayers I am beyond doubt are only upsetting the higher power. and the times you meditate at home for hours on end and tell your boy he is not allowed return home till a certain time, you are being very selfish as we have our plans too as a family and I never got asked if I /my kids nanny was okay to baby sit. Please someone direct me to where I can complaint, within the building I live, I could easily lodge 3 complaints from the 10 families I know...!! Excuse the tone of the email, I am infuriated and No I cannot talk to the mum directly - it will be equal to administering medicine to the dead.

Also from The National: This year, the Government will begin enforcing new building codes that will require windows open no more than 10 centimetres, in accordance with international standards, after a spate of accidents where children fell from windows. Officials and child safety experts recommend that parents install locks on doors and windows, as Mrs Homaidi did. [b'>Property owners will also be required to install government-approved window locks, according to a special clause expected to be written into lease contracts. Regular inspections by Civil Defence would ensure compliance[/b'>

This is something I worry about as I live in an apt (albeit on the 1st floor). Has anyone approached their landlord in view of having special l;ocks installed? Poor child :-( Yeap, i just delayed our house move as the new landlord hasn't finished the childproofing measures I asked for ( and he agreed to). I couldn't live with my self if one of the kids got out whilst I was waiting for him. To my mind, supervision isn't enough - there are always moments here or there when a career is in the toilet/not concentrating/dealing with another child. I do however believe the aunt is answerable here as sleeping is another matter entirely! In our old villa I drilled all the windows shut! A nightmare for conservationists I know as I use the air con all year round, but I am truelly paranoid about this. <em>edited by Alicia on 03/02/2012</em>

Found this article, worth reading/ http://www.dubaikidz.biz/index.php/emag/206-safety1.html Suzy I think I need to get this done too, how do they do it? Do they install bars or add locks? Do you think Emrill our maintenance company can do it - or could you give me contact details of who did yours? TIA

Omg how ironic that they had already been warned *and* the story reported in the media. We can only assume that they brought the aunt over in response to that warning... but unfortunately that was not enough. They needed to childproof the windows *and* ensure that the carer stayed awake. This is something I worry about as I live in an apt (albeit on the 1st floor). Has anyone approached their landlord in view of having special l;ocks installed? Poor child :-( Yes, I recently approached my landlord and they locked up all pf my upstairs window/doors the very next day. I live in a villa and all of the windows upstairs are actually doors that open up onto a very small ledge with little protection, or balcony. It would take my 4 yr old son all of two seconds to climb them, especially one that overlooks the garden where they play. At first the maintenance supervisor told me that he'd call in a specialist but I'd have to pay. i told him to take it to the landlord because this was a question of security and I made reference to the recent deaths - and voila. All done now. Interestingly just tonight, both my kids were trying to open one of of the doors which has no balcony and this small ledge, and they were blocked! Ha! Beat the system!!! Saved my kids!!!

Its just how it is, some parents will only buckle up their kids when it becomes law and they could be potentially fined. There is a compelling need for neglect to be prosecutable and for this 'law' to be enforced immediately. I remember reading the initial news aritcle and was shocked that the child was alone at home.. I cannot sympathise with the parents. I hope the child is in a better place. If the parents were prosecuted two weeks ago and told they would be fined if their windows were not sealed or at least that if their window was found open, the would be checked to ensure an adult was in the room and fined if not, maybe the child could have been saved. Humans in general are no where near as intelligent, responsible and caring as I had believed when I was little. We need laws to regulate the sheep.

I dont want to be judgemental but why do people have kids if they can not ensure that someone responsible is taking care of them...the aunt is seriously to be blamed for this and should be punished...she is family so the parents must have found her to be reliable and trust worthy...i know my friends always have fixed a proper lock on the balcony door so her kids just dont have that choice to know what the balcony even looks like... At least this way, if you have to leave your kids at home, you dont have to worry about the maid accidentally leaving the balcony door open etc.. such a sad story and such a waste of a young life...Here parents are dying to have kids and some arent lucky enough to have kids...and then you get these ignorant people who dont value what they have...anyway...all said, no matter whose fault, im sure the parents must be suffering right now...my heart goes out to them irrespective of their irresponsibility

The Aunt should be arrested for child neglect! How can you sleep while a 3 year old wanders the house alone? I absolutely agree. This is unbelievable and keeps on happening here. When you choose to have children, you have a responsibility. And they left her ALONE before and she was saved. How could this happen again? And why were there no repercussions the first time?

The parents should have been arrested the first time around. I may get slated for this, but could it be that they never really even cared?
