There's no golden rule for when decorations go up. When I was a child my parents slowly started decorating starting on the first advent when the advent wreath came out. The advent calendar also started on December 1st. Usually at the end of the first week of December my mother would go out to a friend's farm to cut branches of bittersweet vines to decorate the house with, and the tree usually went up two weeks before Christmas along with the rest of the decorations. Everything stayed up till Epiphany, January 6th. We haven't decorated for Christmas out here in Dubai as we've always gone home for Christmas. I like taking the boys from the land of sun and sand and suddenly plunging them into "Christmas" at Grandma and Grandpa's house literally overnight.

After National Day and all that excitement is finished! :) Can't deal with too much happening at the same time :D We always leave putting the tree up till Christmas Eve, and tradition has it you're supposed to take it down on Twelfth Night (6th January, the Epiphany or Feast of the Kings), but in Geneva, we used to leave it up for as long as possible to cheer us up through the dark winter days :) MS, I can't figure out who you are, but do you have anything to do with Alex's shoes?

@DubaiCat is it the album with Robbie Williams on it too doing a funny song, and the Spice Girls covering 'Xmas Wrapping'? If so, I possibly have it in my stuff coming over from the UK!

Previous to Dubai... ours went up right before December and came down after New Years Day. This year we have guests galore coming out here to celebrate. So, I have already started getting the xmas stuff out. The tree is up but, everything else will wait for a week. I have to admit that I am just as excited to be touching all my ole decorations as we are not used to a sunny November and warm winter. This will be an interesting season for our Family.

Yet again, though, I'm mourning the loss of my favourite Christmas album. I always used to play it when I put the tree up and I took it home a few years ago, played it at Mum's for a couple of weeks and then took it up to my sister's on Christmas Day and it's never been seen since. In case anyone might have a copy, it's a Now! compilation but I think it must have been a Far East version as I got it in Singapore in about 2002/2003 and haven't ever been able to find any record of it online since. It's got Spice Girls, Britney Spears, John Denver, Kate Winslet and a load more on there. Here's hoping! :D

Any time after the first day of advent is fair game :). The first Sunday of advent 2011 is 27th November. It comes down on twelfth night. Or when I can be bothered. So if you're driving through the streets of Fujairah in February and wondering why the lights are still on in one of the windows...

we put ours up 2nd weekend in December, so this year 9th or 10th...and it always comes down before the 12 days after Christmas have passed, usually before school resumes

We always put the tree up on 16 December growing up. Now we put it up on 1 december but parents stick to the 16th tradition. We always take it down 12 days after xmas.

When I was a child it always went up the day after school broke up for the holidays. When we didn't have DD it was the Saturday before Christmas and came down nearest Saturday to New Year. Now we have DD it is going up 2 weeks before Christmas as her Grandparents leave the next day and hopefully will make them feel part of it all.

Ours has always gone up 7 days before Christmas Day which was always enough for us even when the kids were young. A friend said that she saw a tree up last WEEK in a neighbouring village!! It's personal preference of course but in my view, putting them up before December is way too early.

We always put ours up Dec 1st but in the states a lot of people put theirs up the day after Thanksgiving mainly b/c they have that four day weekend to drag all the decorations out of storage and get things set up.
