My miscarriage - warning, LONG post! Sorry.

Yesterday, at 8wks 5 days, I lost our precious little baby.

Three weeks ago I was completely freaked out to find myself unexpectedly pregnant but in no time at all I was in love with this baby and researching people movers. :)

Three weeks ago I saw a strong heartbeat in a teeny bubba that was in a perfect position. Since my body has done this successfully three times already, I assumed all would be well.

I had tiny bits of spotting on and off throughout the pregnancy then on Tuesday it changed...mucousy (plug?) and mild cramps. My gut instinct was that something was dreadfully wrong. I saw my GP and we booked an ultrasound. Yesterday the cramping was almost unbearable, the bleeding very very heavy and the ultrasound confirmed no heartbeat.

I am so so so so sad. It's almost overwhelming. My husband is away for work and not due back until Sunday night.

The only 'silly' thought that keeps going around in my head is that I feel like an idiot for telling everyone so early and, for some reason I can't explain, I'm really embarrassed about telling anyone (including you!) what's happened. I've told my husband, my children, my sister, my best friend and my Mum. I just don't want to tell anyone else. Pressure is on...school mum friends on Monday and all that.

Telling my children was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. I'm a great believer in telling children the truth in an age appropriate way. They are so intuitive I knew I couldn't keep it from them. I told them something very sad had happened...that our new baby had died.

They have been amazing given their very young ages and they keep asking questions as they process it all...

Ben (6) asked, "How did you know the baby had died?" He knew I'd been to the GP so I told him "My doctor and I worked it out together." Ben has seen a home-birth video so I was able to say, "Do you remember XYZ's birth movie and how she was losing some blood after the baby was born? Mummy is losing some blood like that and I have terrible pains in my tummy. That was enough for the doctor and I to know something is very wrong."

Josie (4) asked, "Why are you SO sad Mum? We didn't even know this baby." to which I said, "You know how much I love you, Ben and Charlotte? Well I already loved this baby that much too and it's very hard for me to believe I'll never meet him." (the children had nicknamed 'him' Fred. Bless them. xx)

My first pregnancy ended in a missed miscarriage which we discovered at our NT scan. That was a whole other level of sadness, being the first and 'passed' the 'danger period' etc. After that news I had a D&C so have never gone through a natural miscarriage before. I am 'ok'. Bleeding has eased but the contractions continue and I can't believe how SORE I am. Far out...for such an early loss, I'm almost as uncomfortable as after a full-term delivery. I didn't expect that.

I'm off to the Dr tomorrow for an Anti D shot (I'm Rh neg) and he'll apparently schedule an ultrasound for sometime soon to make sure all has passed.

Whew...If you've made it this far, well done! And thank you for listening. Lordy...I'm so sad.

Of dear Green-ish ... So so so sorry to read these news :( you told people about your pregnancy because you were excited - that is only normal! Now you have told the people that need to know right now about your loss and anyone else can wait until you are ready. Don't put pressure on yourself to tell anyone else if you are not up to it right now - you don't owe them any explanations. I am not sure if this is going to help but my first pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 7.5 weeks and I know how painful it is although you never met the little angel. My thoughts are with you - I know that whatever all of us say and write on here cannot take the pain away but still, as you can see we are all with you. Big hugs going your way xxx BTW what a beautiful post, Gatta Matta edited by twin_butterfly on 22/01/2012

I would just like to add my condolences Green-ish. I had a similar event last year but it was my first pregnancy. We can only get strength from those around us at a time like this so, by telling people, you have strengthened your support system and therefore, the amount of people who understand what you've been through. Although it is a very very sad post, I hope you don't mind that I have taken solace from it. After losing one at 10 weeks last year, I lost another 9 weeks later at 5 weeks - very early but still devastating. I am now 33 weeks pregnant and it's wonderful to know that you had three successful pregnancies in a row after your own first sadness. Thank you for your post. I truly believe us women should share these experiences and never be embarrassed by the cruel twists that colour our lives xxxxx Best wishes x

Oh my lovely friends...please accept my apologies for not having the energy to thank each of you individually. You are right, I am drawing strength from so many of your words. I am amazed that I only know a few of you in person, yet a community like this can give me such support. Who knew words on a screen were really that powerful (and believe me, I know it's a whole lot more than just 'words on a screen' :)) I'm a titch sentimental and soppy at the moment but I really miss my Dubai buddies and SO wish I was there with you. xxx I'm getting on with each day, loving the cuddles with my gorgeous Ben, Josephine and Charlotte, calling in help from my Mum and my wonderful neighbour and looking forward to my husband coming home tomorrow night. This has been very hard on him too, so far away from his family. :( I have to give a special mention to Gatta Matta. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for sharing your story. I am holding it close to my heart. My son often giggles in his sleep. He's a beautiful, gentle, sensitive soul and now I will wonder if he is indeed playing with his now two lost siblings. I love your posts here. You are a very special person. xxx Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and hugs. Every one of them has helped me and given me some comfort.

Don't usually come onto this section. Now I know why I visited today. Firstly great big hugs to you dear. You are such a giving person, don't know you personally but have "got to know you" for the past year on EW. You sharing your story is once again giving back and helping others who have or will one day go through what you have just had to. It seems to me you have handled this very well with your little ones (beautiful names BTW) and no don't beat yourself up about sharing your news. Most importantly allow yourself time to grieve and heal. As blinkthink said, heaven has another angel. More hugs XXXX

Gosh, hun, I'm genuinely sorry to hear this. I lost mine naturally at 8 weeks and can remember how I felt - that realisation that something was going horrendously wrong and there was nothing I could do to stop it. There's no foolishness involved in being excited about a pregnancy - especially if you've not experienced an early miscarriage before. Don't worry about other mums' reactions. You owe them no explanation whatsoever. I think you're simply amazing in being able to talk and listen to your children's responses and from what you've written, there's some kind of therapy in that, some kind of peace to be found in articulating your feelings to them. Thinking of you... even though we've never met.

Hey Green-ish, I'm not sure why I opened this thread when I would usually skip it (not meant to sound callous, just that my time in these sort of conversations has passed) but I'm glad I did. I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through, especially without your DH around. You say that the kids have been amazing but it sounds as though YOU are the one doing an AMAZING job dealing with your and their emotions. How wonderful that they are growing up to know that these things happen naturally, and to be sad and practical and all that lies in between. You say you feel embarrassed and for sure can be a natural reaction (I know friends who've felt the same way) but imagine if you can impart to your daughter that there's nothing to be embarrassed about should she suffer the same sadness (heavens forbid) in her life. Sorry I wasn't meant to be all womens-lib at a difficult time for you, but it just occured to me that you're handling everything really way, so cap off to you. I hope you can take the tiny bit of positivity (if that's a word?!) in such a challenging time. And lastly hugs, hugs and more hugs. Take care xx

Green-ish, all the best care and thoughts to you and your poor hubby (who must be feeling pretty bad away from you as well). Hope that you are close by to true and good friends who can help you through. All the very best to you. GattaMatta - that is really beautiful, and I hope Green-ish can take some solace.
