somewhere for people to walk without crossing building sites, holes, rusty nails, diggers and walking directly in the street sometimes..... and places for pedestrians to cross the road where it is safe and we can see whats coming. Some hoardings in JBR dont allow any visibility at all and Im sure its as bad across Dubai The worst design is the way the metro and Burj / Dubai Mall dont connect. Anyone walking up from the metro has no way to access the mall and the only way is to enter the LG basement parking area, with all the cars, and walk alongside the cars, to get into the car park and find an entrance. One could walk up the ramp to Fashion entrance but its a down vehicular ramp and very dangerous! Every day I find loads of confused tourists who dont have a clue how to get into the mall from the main set of traffic lights and I point it out, so there is no signage up either guiding people (unless you have a car) The walkway (which will be air conditioned and above street level) connecting Dubai Mall metro station and Dubai Mall is currently underway. at the pace which it is being constructed, it will be finished before we know it. I like what someone said about how it took centuries for other cities to build up their infrastructure etc. Let's not forget that this country is only 40 years old. It has literally mushroomed overnight, and personally I think Dubai and the UAE have done an absolutely amazing and incredible job of building round us the road system, metro system, banking system, immigration system, procedures etc. Going to bow out of this thread now, just gets my BP up. lol!

A proper library. This got me thinking, so I looked it up - anyone tried any of these libraries? http://www.dubaipubliclibrary.ae/About.htm They are all rubbish! Okay on that basis, I second this A proper library, not commercialised (as so many places here are). A huge library in a purpose built building, with millions of books (hopefully uncensored), floor to ceiling bookcases, a newspaper archive, a reference section with encyclopedia britannica, maps and other reference books, local plans for buildings and structures (they could put these on microfiche, I love microfiche just for nostalgia), a study section for students, a children's section, a computer room, absolute silence (this could be impossible in Dubai as security do not discipline anyone except nude women and swearing expats), and real librarians, maybe wearing tweed. Perhaps I am getting carried away, I do love libraries. And on a similar subject a museum, like the British museum, a huge museum, with free entry and lots of exhibits including world exhibits as well as local exhibits and touring exhibits. Yes I know Dubai has a museum but it is not a grand museum and they seem to have money to burn so why not on an amazing grand museum, like the museum epicentre of the middle east. Also a natural history museum and a science museum would be good, perhaps roll them all into one "Dubai Public Museum of History, Science and Art". Lastly another one, an opera house, Oman has one, Abu Dhabi claims to have one but not really a dedicated one, they could have European opera tours combined with some local arts. Perhaps even open a local arts education centre. I know they are meant to be building one but it seems to be taking forever. This is possibly what people are talking about when they refer to Dubai lacking culture, they dredge up a load of useless islands from the sea costing millions or even billions but have little in the way of museums, libraries and arts. I do miss all of the above as well as theatres, art museums, high quality public radio/television stations that have informative and well researched documentaries. But two things: 1 it took decades if not centuries to get to this particular standard and to create the cultural infrastructures that there are in Europe for example 2 In order to have unbiased uncomercialized cultural establishments ideally with affordable entrance fees, you need to be free of the need for sponsors, so they need to be financed by the public, which is usually done with tax money

In my opinion the loving attention To detail is often missing, f.e. new residential areas but no pavement. Parking areas in sand, f.e. outside of the Emirates Identity Authority in knowledge village, sometimes I dont know how to clean my shoes before walking in, it is embarassing. Reg. employment: cheap is often not good. They save at the wrong end. When I have to ask supermarket staff for an item, they often tell me, they dont have it or they dont know and it happend that they stood infront of it. It is really annoying, when I find it later and they just dont care. With incompetent staff you sell less and customers might not come back. In "normal" budget restaurants or cafes I am often surprised that they dont put more effort in their service cause this would top up their decent salary. One of the few branches where you can get a good tip. It is a generalisation and I want to mention that there are always others, who really do a good job. Those stand out from the crowd for me and they deserve a good tip.

then you could just walk into any hotel and use the business centre ;) really have you tried that? Please tell me which hotels and I will let my friends and visitors know next time they are in town. Personally I found the business centres to be 2 consoles within view of reception that requires one to be a guest but since you have better experience than I do in this,Id welcome a list, thanks

There is a good libary (which also does story telling for children) in MOE. The municipality has librbaries all over the place. Internet cafes:- Greens - used to be an internet cafe in the Choitrams centre. If it is no longer there, you can use Wifi in the Costa. Marina - again, wifi in most of the coffee shops (Costa, Starbucks) otherwise www.makebusinesshub.com Dubai Mall - all the coffee shops, + there are the hotels roundabout i.e. the Manzil which also have facilities MOE, again (!) coffee shops otherwise there are internet cafes in Barsha If you are in Jumeirah, apart from places you may have guessed by now, there are umpteen internet cafes in Satwa which is only a short distance. Next. LOL. Ms Potatohead --- you are describing wifi zones for people who already have laptops!!!!! When I got here I didnt own a laptop and finally bought one as I couldnt not find any other way to stay in touch with family, and yes, since getting a laptop there is a lot of wifi (not as much as other countries but its pretty good) but not an internet cafe with computers and keyboards and earphones etc which you can rent by the hour.

It's by and large not the expats bringing these brands over. Most expats here start their own brands. The franchises are owned by Emiratis! Aren't these sponsored, hence owned, by locals but brought in by expats? No, every time I've come upon an owner it has been either a local or - expat, yes, but from the region - not from the location where the brand originated. For example, Pottery Barn is brought in by the Al Shaya group.

A proper library. This got me thinking, so I looked it up - anyone tried any of these libraries? http://www.dubaipubliclibrary.ae/About.htm I have been to two public libraries here. I went to inquire about the children's section, though, so I don't know anything about the adult section. I was told by the librarian that the library is suitable for children 6 years of age and older. They can read and use the Internet there but there are no programs for children like there are in many Western countries. Yes E, but the selection of the books is useless.

Lets be fair Most of the stuff mentioned in this thread seems in the line of "I wish Dubai had x/y/z brand of food/clothing". It doesnt seem to be people whining and critisizing Dubai for not having what they want. I disagree, I only see a few posts regarding brands. And one of them is a more general request for ready to cook meals. Most of the posts are regarding footpaths, road systems, postal systems, customer service, places for pets, fresh ready made foodstuffs and in my case some points regarding maid opportunity and equality, religious freedom, animal protection, personal safety, local culture and alternative energy. To others who have had a moan about enjoying the expat experience and trying to change another country I don't think that many of these points above are fundamentally changing a country just making it into the smoothly functioning, system of semi equality we see in the western world, something which I think would be hugely beneficial to any country, more so than the latest clothes shop or MacDonalds. If there is one thing fundamentally wrong with this country it is the people (often locals) who bring these brands here thinking they can create 'little America' or 'little Europe' without realising what this country actually needs to be on a par with the Western world is communication, transport, equal opportunity, human and animal rights, cultural protection and a smaller carbon footprint.

Sometimes it feels like you want to fill UAE up with so much of your home country, that what is the point of living in a different country? You are living in the Middle East, it is [i'>meant [/i'>to be different. And if you want your UK TV, and your own imported food, are you also prepared to have TV & imported food from all the citizens from the other countries who live here too? I somehow feel that many of the American food chains and British clothing outlets are not here primarily for the expats from those countries, rather their main customers seem to be expats from other continents as well as Emiratis True! It's by and large not the expats bringing these brands over. Most expats here start their own brands. The franchises are owned by Emiratis!

btw, there are tons of internet cafes?... I suppose it depends on demographics but when I arrived I headed to MOE, Ibn Battuta and Marina for food, groceries and hunting for an internet cafe. Most tourists also end up wandering around hotels and then onto Dubai Mall to check out the tallest tower in the world.... in a mall that has "everything" except internet cafes. Perhaps where you live and your guests stay there are internet cafes but not anywhere near us, and getting a 1 hour metro to Bur Dubai to check emails seems crazy if someone is staying in Greens for example. Also, we live in JBR and its full of people putting in new curtains, furniture and patching things up before tenants leases are up and there are enough people here to justify a few small hardware shops and an internet cafe. In our sector Shams, we have 5 shops selling endangered dead animals (ie fur) but nowhere to buy some nails!

I really dislike these sorts of threads. They always focus on the negatives and people always pull the same phrases out of the bag re Dubai having no soul etc. I feel really sorry for people who have not discovered Dubai's soul, or don't realise it exists. Enjoy the experience and differences of living in a Middle East country. EXPLORE and find the culture, find the soul, live outside of your comfort zone. You'll be back in your home country before you know it! Like! I lived in Germany as an ex pat and believe me you could hardly get any English foods/toiletries/clothing etc. I adopted the attitude when in Rome and personally think we are spoilt here and catered too very well :-)

The fact that there is a thread up about what is missing shows that people here are not satisfied what this place has to offer. Don't people have this conversation about everywhere they live? Even their home town/country?
