Hi Ladies
I've just moved to dubai and am looking to purchase a cooker...... can't decide on whether to get a gas cooker or electric...... is it expensive to run a gas cooker?

Also, can anyone recommend good appliance stores??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Also have gas/electric combo. I have 4 gas rings and 2 electric and then the electric oven. Great for when the gas bottle runs out :) where did you buy it? Who has the biggest and best selection of cookers?

My cooker has 5 gas rings and an electric convection fan oven - it's brilliant. I love gas on top, can't stand gas ovens, they're so unpredictable.

Yup, hated my ceramic hob. Mine is built in so we left the oven and changed the hob for a gas one. With my ceramic one I had to work out what needed to be boiled and when because I could only use 2 rings at a time and only one on high or the others would turn themselves down to 1, or even off. It got marked very easily and was difficult to clean.

I'm with Sandy, i have electric everything, and the hob is a ceramic one and a nightmare, our cleaner chipped the side, which will cost 3,000aed to replace and nothing stays hot enough!

Cakes burn often at the bottom and can't make meringues or loads of the German x-mas cookies as the temp is too high in gas. I also have this problem, and aside from getting a new set, I haven't figure out the solution. I've tried reducing the temp, monitoring the temp closely with an oven thermometer, changing the shelf level, using parchment paper, etc., but still the bottoms always end up burnt. Very frustrating! tried same stuff! and agree re frustrating!

the gas/electric with electric oven & 4 gas & 2 hotplates would be my dream combo - currently have the top as mentioned but the oven is gas and I HATE it. Cakes burn often at the bottom and can't make meringues or loads of the German x-mas cookies as the temp is too high in gas. Missymoo and others who have the dream combo: Where did you buy this combo from and do they also have the self-cleaning facility? How expensive are they?

Thank you ladies for this information!! We have had both in the past and prefer cooking on a stove with gas but was worried it would be expensive...... might look into the gas stove/electric oven option.

As someone who loves to bake, an electric oven is a must. However, love gas hobs. I, too, purchased a gas top with electric oven combination -- love it.

I've always preferred gas but hated it here. I think the problem may be with the supply coming through bottles and the regulators. The two ovens I had were always hit and miss with the temperature. I had to have a separate thermometer in the oven and "guess" where to turn the temperature knob. I know have an electric oven and a gas hob which is the perfect combination for me too.

We had a Zanussi oven. Four gas hobs, two electric hobs and an electric oven. Best of both worlds for me - kind of - eventually. Still going strong after seven years and we think the new owners (to whom it was gifted) are getting used to it. We always had a spare gas bottle which DH could connect if the first ran out but on one occasion the regulator didn't work. At least we had the two electric hobs which meant that we could eat the meal I'd cooked that night - thankfully it was spag bol.

When I first arrived in Dubai I had to use an electric hob and oven, the oven was no problem as I preferred this but it took a while to get used to the electric hob but you do used to it. When we moved we bought our own so we got gas hob and electric oven which is what I prefer. I think in the 18 months we have had the cooker we have used two or three gas bottles.

It took me a while to find it and I was told that it was not available in Dubai (but it was!!!) I had a gas hob with an elecric oven - best of both worlds. I love to cook with a gas hob but prefer an electric oven - we found a superb one in Carrefour and it's still going strong in my friends villa!

Got a ceramic stove top (White Westinghouse) and love the oven. I do a lot of baking and the oven is great. Its a pain to clean the stove top but other than that I like it.
