My cleaner arrived in a fluster today saying that she had just passed a woman at the compound swimming pool wearing nothing but stringy bikini bottoms. The woman was standing up chatting to her teenage son. The compound gardener, a very decent guy, was keeping clear of pool area to avoid embarrassment. Unfortunately, his office door is down there, so he was in a bit of a jam.

I was completely outraged, but a friend pointed out that she is in her own home, not on a public beach and should be allowed to do what she wants. I don't know who she was or which Villa she came from, should I ask the management to intervene? Am I overreacting?

I think for her own sake something (in house) should be mentioned regarding this action. Should someone complain formally to the police etc she will be imprisoned and then deported. This is not acceptable here in the UAE (or in most countries I would think). I wonder what her poor teenage son was thinking. Certainly I would not want my 10year daughter seeing this and thinking it is OK because it is not. Topless sunbathing is pretty standard in Europe.... All shapes and sizes when I was in Spain. Perhaps so, but, we are not in Europe. We are in an Islamic country where this is considered haram and, in fact, is punishable by law. Someone should remind this woman of this point so she can be saved the embarrassment of arrest, prison, and deportation. I was actually responding to you comment about most places in the world Please accept my apology. I was actually surprised at your comment (my misinterpretation of) as you are usually very level headed and have an excellent understanding of the context in which we are living here in the UAE.

When me and my husband were in Turkey, us and a couple of mates we'd met went in to use the hotel's sauna. We were sat there with full swimmers and towels on when some Germans came in. All was ok til they totally stripped off. One of the women then sat opposite my husband with her legs akimbo! Of course, with us been British, we started mumbling something about the weather then made a hasty exit

It is but not normally at the swimming pool. I lived in a few European countries and only saw the topless bathers in the park, or beach (or nackt sauna). edited by Alismum on 09/11/2014 Depends if it's an outdoors pool

I agree Daza, It does seem rather strange that she was stood there in front of her teenage son. I think teen boys would run a mile if they saw their mum taking her top off in front of them. Perhaps this woman was wearing a flesh coloured bikini and it looked see-through when wet. I really can't believe someone would be topless in a communal pool (even in Europe it wouldn't be acceptable), they have gotta be a bit dim, or brazen. Chewit so what did you do in the end? edited by Alismum on 08/11/2014 Daza was right, I wasn't outraged on my behalf. For one thing, I didn't even see the woman, and for another, I've done it myself in Europe (not with my teenage kids around). I won't be going round to patrol the swimming pool in case she returns so that I can give her a friendly warning. There are plenty of Muslim families in the compound who will jump all over this if it becomes a regular event. With any luck, it was a one-off.

Would I be outraged? No. Would I think it inappropriate? Absolutely! Nothing wrong with going and having a polite word with her, that she needs to remember where she is and that it's not acceptable to go topless - compounds are still public areas and not private. With regards to Europe, I don't find it odd at all. I've frequented topless beaches etc and done it myself. When we go skiing in Austria every year, you get into trouble if you wear more than a towel into the saunas - it's 'normal'. It IS only skin after all. I don't have an issue with it. edited by FairyDust on 09/11/2014

Dubai has long been the Benidorm of the the Gulf regrettably. I went to Benidorm 2 years ago and believe me the new town is nothing like Dubai I was horrified at what I saw there!

Sorry to go off on a tangent but has anyone ever visited the lakes regions in the summer time in Germany and felt, um, embarrassed? Those women let it all hang out! I lived in Germany for several years and remember seeing all of this at the place called Sudsea ( spelling may be wrong) I was embarrassed at first but after a while it didn't bother me I wandered onto a nudist beach without knowing in Fuerterventura once and got out there as quick as I could haha

Hahaha I think it is culture there. I remember we went to a public swimming pool in Berlin that had a park attached to it and many women were topless. Then I went into the changing rooms and honestly did not know where to look...naked ladies everywhere...[b'>coming from the UK where people are the complete other extreme it was an experience![/b'> I don't know if I agree with that after some of the holidays I've had in Europe. The brits weren't that different to certain other nationalities. It's got to be something to do with the feel of the sun on your skin!!! Once that happens all your inhibitions disappear ;)

Crikey, when I was a teenager if my mother had gotten her baps out at a swimming pool I would have died of embarrassment, not stood there chatting to her! If I felt outraged by anyone's behaviour (nudity or otherwise) at our community swimming pool I'd say something directly to them first off. If not resolved I'd escalate it to security or management. To be honest, if it didn't bother me, I wouldn't bother complaining on the basis that someone else might be offended. I think most people are perfectly capable of complaining if something upsets them enough so I wouldn't rush in under the notion that I was acting on behalf of others possibly taking offense. If it upsets the gardener he could alert management himself.

Seriously you are completely outraged? For goodness sake it’s only a pair of boobs. It’s her business and no doubt someone at some point will inform the naïve lady that in this country in public getting your boobs out is not cricket. As for the gardener, you have to be kidding, lol. If you want to be kind go and politely inform the lady of her faux pas.

I'm beginning to wonder if it was someone visiting Dubai. It is hard to believe that a resident would be so insensitive. It is sad if we have to resort to posters to remind people to be respectful. Do they even work?

I agree with the other posters NO WAY should she be doing this. Not only because it is illegal but it is also disrespectful to the other residents who use the pool. Poor gardener, although it probably made his day......or not.

I'm sorry but your friend is wrong! If inside her own home, doors closed yes, but outside in the compound visible area, she'll get herself arrested!!

I don't think you're overreacting. The compound swimming pool is not her private home. Residents using the common grounds should adhere to compound rules. One of which will certainly be to dress modestly and no nudity. Talk to the management and have them put up signs.
