Oman booze question

Hi ladies

Planning to drive to Muscat to stay with friends for a couple of days & gather we're not allowed to take any booze over the border. Does anyone know of a "hole in the wall" or whether we can buy from a hotel to take out? The friends we're visiting have only just arrived in the country themselves so don't have licence yet. Going out of an evening isn't really an option either due to small children (ours and theirs).

TIA for your help.

I've had my bags gone over superficially, (they didn't haul everything out but they looked) and my sister has had them go through her cooler. A bottle would probably have turned up in either inspection. it is only relatively recently the liquor stores in UAE have been open during Ramadan - in Qatar and Oman they close for the full period as does the serving of alcohol in the hotels during that time. Getting a liquor license is much the same procedure as in UAE - RP, employer consent letter specifying salary, etc. edited by marycatherine on 26/08/2011

We lived in Oman many years ago and had a licence, the liquor shops were always closed throughout Ramadan though. We have popped a few bottles inside our luggage when going through the Hatta border and never encountered any problems, it's a very half hearted check.

Has anyone ever known someone or heard of someone they know getting their luggage searched? We usually get the boot opened to look for "people smuggling" but never have had our luggage searched crossing the border. If you're just going for a couple of days you wouldn't be taking a carton or two which would be obvious I'm sure.

According to a friend of ours who lived in Muscat for quite a few years, you can not buy b00ze there like you can here. TGhe only place that you can consume it is in hotels. I like marycatherine's idea. ;)

There is no hole in the wall that I'm aware of and I very much doubt if you could get a hotel to sell you booze to take out. If you drink vodka or gin (or other clear liquid) you could try filling a water bottle with it. They can and do check coolers and car boots, but I've never had anyone open a water bottle and sniff it.
