It depends on many factors. Do you overload the washing machine? Is the water hard? etc I think on average life for a washing machine is around 5 years. I have had many washing machines over the...

Our whirlpool washer went kaput last week... Don't know how old is cos it came with our flat.... Have used Jim'll fix it for repairs for stuff im the past but saw a new company Care and Repair advertised on here so gave them a call... They came at night and had a look... 100 dhs call out fee for first hour.., and bingo they fixed it! It wasn't spinning or draining... Motor was flooded apparently.... So we now have one working washing machine for just 100 dhs! Call someone out to look at it before u buy a new one it might be an easy fix :) they said they'd tell us if it was non reparable so worth a punt.... www.careandrepair.ae is their website. <em>edited by Licorice on 13/01/2013</em>

TDB, Call the dealer, I believe that the spinning thingy (got no idea what's named) is getting loos, they need to stablize it. one more thing: do not have a washing machine that drys as well, otherwise the washing load will take so long to finish, get the basic model, and just get a separate dryer. Have to totally agree with the separate drier, had both and just found the drier on the washer drier was just no good! Friends said exactly the same in their experience!

When we moved here just over 5 years ago, we were given a very small allowance to furnish a 2 bed apartment so we got the cheapest of everything. We bought a Campomatic washing machine and dishwasher expecting them to not last very long. Not had a days trouble and I love them, I am going to be gutted when they will need to be replaced :(

We have a Daewoo washing machine (made in Jordan), and had a problem only once in the last 10 years we've had it. Their repair service was also excellent, quick and efficient.

The wheels on my LG fridge crumbled within one month of the warranty ending. It was one year old and we do NOT ride the thing around the kitchen. Whirlpool dishwasher lasted 2 years and Campomatic (I know) fridge lasted 2 years until the handle fell off and the back cracked open and started leaking. The repair men put chewing gum on the crack. It didn't help.

First of all, the Whirlpool that is sold here is not the same as Whirlpool as made in the USA - we get the stuff for the Eastern Europe market. After saying that, we bought an expensive made in the USA one originally and it only lasted about 4-5 years. The replacement Whirlpool not from the USA lasted that same period of time. I am now on LG. We're most likely purchasing an LG. I've been a fan of anything they make for a long, long time. Plus the price is right!

A good washing machine should last you atleast 6 years is what a salesman once told us, but provided that we take care of it. Reading the Manual etc. We have a Bosch machine, it was perfect, making no noise etc. But of late, It has started making some noises. I guess its important to fix the small problems fast before something really goes wrong. And I think I should practice what I preach. :)

Another Miele girl here. Bought mine three years ago and it's such a fantastic machine. One of the few appliances I would take with if we left Dubai. Also had a tumble dryer that my Mum bought in 1986 when my brother was born. It died 4 years ago so lived a long life, moved several times across countries and was used a lot.

If you invest in a good one, it may last 10-15 years. Really, in my experience it always pays of to go for a premium brand in white goods. I agree. We bought a Miele washing machine....the more expensive choice at the time. We use it several times a day and it is still going strong after nine years. Well worth the investment. And they have an experienced repair team. I had a Miele as well, best machine we ever bought, I had it 10 years and when we left Europe we sold it on for a good price as well. I had a Hotpoint here that lasted 18 months, worst one so far, now I have a second hand Siemens and I daren't say how long it's been going for fear of it packing up on me tomorrow ;), but it's been a long time.

I've had my top-loading, White-Westinghouse for at least 10+ years now. Bought it at the Co-Op (I think) and gets used all the time. It is still going strong, however, I do have a new problem that just creeped up wherein the barings are starting to go so gets a bit loud when spinning. They tried to fix but said it would be better to let it die a natural death than spend the money to fix. Other than that, works great still. One thing I have learned over my years is to just buy very basic models of any appliance. The more "bells and whistles" the more apt you are to have problems. I have had service to appliances done which have been worth the money spent. I agree that it is worth having it checked out.

TDB Honestly I have had excellent after sales service from Al Ghandi over the years and have always had Whirlpool appliances (hob, dishwasher, dryer, fridge, oven etc) so it might be worth calling them out, at least once just to see if it is a simple thing to fix.
