Hi ladies, my houswemaid of 3 years converted into islam a long time ago in ethiopia (before she even came to us). She is a lovely lady however she is illiterate even in her own mother tongue as she only attended a few years of primary school. Whenever she see's me reading Quran she's get so wistful as she really wishes she could read it! She prays 5 times a day, fasts and is always covered mashalla - I have to say she does even better than me sometimes subhannalah!

I need someone who can teach her how to read the arabic letters and then also help her read Quran. I would love to do this myself but what with a full time job and 2 boys to take care for I dont have the energy and focus (and probably patience!) this needs.

I have tried a few quran schools but all of them need the students to at least be able to read. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Jazak Allah khairan..

Thank you, ladies...I live in Al Nahda 1 Dubai if that helps... I will google the digital Quran readers this minute! You can try KALEMAH, which is in Muhaisnah, or even ask your local masjid if they provide classes. Most Islamic Centers provide classes for beginners. And it doesn't really matter if she is illiterate in her own language as Arabic is a totally different language and alphabet. I managed to learn how to read and write in Arabic, I am sure your maid can do the same with the proper classes. Try Dar Al Ber also. They offer lots of different events, classes, Quran Classes, Àrabic classes for both Muslims and non Muslims.. It would be a great start for her.

One of my favourite teachers and speakers about the importance of Arabic is Nouman Ali Khan. If you look up his lectures on YouTube, especially on how to learn Arabic, they are so inspirational. He has a project for online courses in Arabic, $12 a month, totally worth it in my opinion. You can learn at your own pace. The website is: [url=http://www.bayyinah.tv/sp/9942-bayyinah-tv'>Bayyinah.tv[/url'> This is the lecture about the importance of learning Arabic: [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv0U_BP_REU'>YouTube link[/url'> I love listening to his lectures! He does great tafseer and knows how to engage your attention.

Sakhifa, thanks for the suggestion.. I just looked them up. I think it would be more beneficial for her if she actually learned how to read in Arabic..once she has learned the arabic alphabet she can follow along with the digital pen to learn the correct pronounciation, etc... Thanks for your input in any case :)

What you could be looking for is a private teacher. She must learn how to read Arabic letters first before she can start reading Quran. I would not be looking for a proper Quran school now but for an Islamic Center that does Arabic classes for beginners. I think at the moment most centers are closed for regular classes, but if you tell me where you live I might be able to point you in the right direction for after the holidays are over.

You could start by getting her one of those digital Qur'an readers so she can follow along as she listens. QuranExplorer.com is also good.
