Yes, yes yes! The best alternative and for ALL safety proofing services and products is www.shismoo.com. They have been around much longer than anyone else, over 10 years. Fantastic service, British managed and reliable....whats more, no where near 12,000 dirhams. I know for a fact that they could do similar job for under 3,000dh. Where were you a few months ago when I paid all those dirhams to make my balustrade safe?

Hi! Does anyone have any options other than Dumasafe? They have quoted us 12,000 dirhams for the work, which we are willing to pay, but they have now not responded to us. It is like they are trying to avoid us! I really just want a huge piece of plexiglass put up in front of my balustrade plus two custom-made stair gates. I don't see why that should cost that much. Does anyone know of any other companies in Dubai that could provide this service? Thanks. Oh my! That is crazy money. I never childproofed my home and nothing ever happened to my children. Just a firm NO!

Does your DH have any DIY skills at all? We had similar in our house in Muscat; very high ceilings/drop from one floor to another and huge gaps between the balustrades. The simple solution is a large plywood board (plenty of choice in ACE Hardware). Stain it if you wish. Drill a few holes either end and thread tie-wraps/cable ties through the holes and around the balustrades to secure the bord in place. No, my DH would not do this by himself. However, it is a great idea and he'd be happy to pay someone to do it for him. Jim Will Fix It advised me to call Jumeirah Carpentry so that is what we are going to do tomorrow. Thanks for all the advice. I will update once the work has been completed.

I am not one to childproof either, but some things cannot be left as they are.

We paid more that 10'000 dhs for Duma safe to childproof our flat when ds was about 6 mos old and within 3 months all the protections had fallen off. We've since moved and this time dh has gone to karama to buy door locks and plexiglass and done the work himself, much more secure and probably didn't spend 300 dhs. We put hotel room style locks ( with the chain) on the windows and have also shored up our balustrade. Also remember to attach big bookshelves etc to the wall for when the little monsters start climbing:-)

Sorry to hijack, but does anyone know what window locks to use, I can't find anything, n honestly don't even know where to look n what to look. The windows in my apartment slides up, doesn't open full but still It's a big concern, though I never leave my child alone at home but still...acccidents can happen even under supervision. Thanks Maybe you could also contact dumasafe?

My second floor overlooks my ground floor and there is enough space between the poles on the second floor for a child to slip through and a child could also climb on each pole to jump from the top of the bannister. Falling through or over would lead to death or paralysis. Am I going overboard to childproof? Has anyone ever had an upstairs like this with young children? I was thinking that a barricade will have to be up for about 10 years. No because that width of balustrade is against building regulations in most countries. Just get it changed or put in additional poles so that the gaps are no more than 10cm wide. Your child will be part of your home - it shouldn't be about barricading the house against the child, but a mix of making sure the environment is safe and teaching your child (progressively) how to deal with this environment. They will find numerous things to climb up and fall off anyway... just maybe not the landing... although the stairs will certainly happen at some stage.

Maybe try and change the style of the balustrade and rails to make it more child friendly. edited by Princess_I on 04/12/2011

I'm on baby no 3 and have never fully childproofed our home. Anything that is breakable that I don't want broken I have put on a high shelf, chemicals out of reach or in a locked cupboard and stairgates on stairs. I figure it's best to teach kids not to touch things etc. If you visit other people or go away on holiday those places won't be childproofed. Baby Shop. Toys R Us and Mothercare have baby proofing kits and maybe you can call a company like jim will fix it to install the things that need installing if you really want to do the whole thing.
