Hi All, I'm kind of getting the impression I need to visit the schools when we arrive. My eldest is only 6 so I figure if she misses a few days of school whilst we make a decision it's not going to prevent her becoming a Doctor (or similar) if that's what she wishes!! I'll draw up a short list and visit when we arrive I think. I've heard parking/driving for schools runs are a nightmare and as we currently walk to school this will be a big consideration for us so thanks for the advice Kaba - it would bother me too!# I've seen photos of the Villas and they are extremely close but I've also heard renting can be hard work in terms of landlords and expensive so my husband isn't keen at all. Everything is hard from afar however I haven't got time to visit before we move, unfortunately. Can't face bringing the kids alone and no one will want them all for a few days either. Guess we'll just jump in when we arrive and get on with it! Ha ha. If I can give you any advice it would be to stick with company housing, once you opt out there is NO WAY of ever getting back in.Had friends who opted out and always regretted their decision. Mumto3darlings, you have a great attitude and I think it's fantastic that you're waiting until you get here to tour the schools. You'll have such a better feeling for all of them when you step foot on campus. I completely agree with Nomad. We have also had friends who opted out of company housing, there is no way back in and they have moved almost every year due to rent increases and regretted it.

Hi, just to add my 2 cents about your options. I would be careful about choosing GEMS Wellington DSO. I'm not exactly sure of the distance from the Meydan villas but families in my community are only about a 20 min drive from there, yet because of how large the school is and how few parking spaces there are, everyone leaves nearly an hour before school starts just to find a parking space. I have heard pickup is the same nightmare. I'm sure some people aren't too bothered by that situation but I would not be one of them.

Hi mumto3darlings, Yes lots of the Meydan villas are already occupied. The villa itself is good but there is no yard/garden really and a lot of the residents are complaining about the lack of privacy ( they are built extremely close to each other) but the size and location is good.

DESS is also not too far a drive away from Meydan Heights and has an excellent reputation with an automatic feed into their secondary school, DESC. DESS is 20 minutes from Meydan Heights. There are families moving into this community on almost a daily basis. As others have said below it's very centrally located. If you have a few days to come to Dubai and physically visit some of the schools you have mentioned applying it would be a good idea. From afar I was set on sending our child to a particular school and then when I actually went and looked at a few of them, I completely changed my mind. Couldn't put my finger on why I changed my mind but the physical visit was really important. I know it will be hard to do with three children at home but I personally think you should make every possible effort. You may want to join the community closed FB group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/543815932395692/?fref=ts Message one of the page administrators with your villa number and I"m sure you will be accepted to the group. Great for gathering information about the community in advance of your move.

big blue - thanks! I'm fairly sure it's the one behind the racecourse and based on your comments have applied for Al Safa School. If anyone has any feedback I'd like to hear it. Is anyone living on the development behind the racecourse yet?

Hi there, if Meydan Heights is the development behind the Meydan Racecourse then you will be ideally located for the original Safa school. I don't think there is an exit from Meydan Heights to E311 but I may be wrong. You could also access E44 (Al Khail Rd) relatively easily, however most schools will be on the "other" side of the road from where you will be coming and thus you will need to turn around at a junction, hence causing you to drive further and possibly encountering more traffic. The schools you listed will prob all take about 20 mins to reach with traffic, except perhaps Horizon which is in the middle of a massive redevelopment going on in that part of town and traffic and accessibility may progressively get a lot worse. If however Meydan Heights is the development on the corner of E311 (MBZ Rd) and E66 (Al Ain Rd), to my knowledge it has not been handed over yet, and you may be some of the first people moving there in December. Regardless, that location is better placed for schools "along" the E311 (Repton, Jess, GEMS DSO, GEMS Villa, NAS, New Safa school, GEMS Motorcity, etc).

Thanks Nayls85 I have looked at Safa schools they looked great. I'll look on maps later to see distances. If TB is correct then maybe the original Safa is a better bet however I'm led to believe they are full - this is not easy! PS - if anyone lives in Meydan then I'd love to be in touch and find out what is going on, etc.

My son goes to FS2 in Safa Community School, happy there so far. It's got lots of lovely play areas, equipment, and we're very happy with our teacher and teaching assistant, they came over recently from the UK and are great with the children. Our class size is only 13 as well, but I do expect this will increase year to year. It's not as far as some people think. I live in Jumeirah and I can get there in about 13 mins (without speeding!), if Meydan Heights is in Meydan then I expect it shouldn't take you much longer as Al Khail will be a close highway. They do have school buses for young ones too, children in my son's class use it (they are 4-5 year olds) hope this helps

Thank you for the info. I guessed walking is a no-no in Dubai but the less driving I have to do the better! Could you tell me which are the nearest as this is a big consideration, although school bus will be great as they get older. Thanks for the help Tattie Bogle.

The new Safa school will be the furthest from everywhere you've mentioned - you'd be much better trying the original Safa which would be only 5-10 minutes away. Most schools do have buses, yes. Walking is not really an option in Dubai, unfortunately!

Thanks! Emirates subsidise the school so the cost is less of an issue. I have no idea about distance so thanks Tattie Boogie. My kids can currently walk to school so the nearer the better if possible! Do most schools offer a transport option for they are older? Where might have places - anyone know? I'm now thinking Safa Community might be favourite as I have heard they have places. Any help welcomed. Thanks! edited by mumto3darlings on 14/10/2014

Most expat schools are good, it comes down to 1.Where you can get your children into! 2. Distance from home...closer the better 3.affordability. Good luck!

All of these schools are within good commuting distance from Meydan Heights which is really not too far from anywhere as you will be 5-10 minutes from all major highways. You could also consider the new Gems school on Al Khail Road, the new Gems at The Villa, and Star International. Any of these schools & the ones you have listed will be within a 15-20 minute drive.

Ladies, I am moving out to Dubai (Meydan Heights) around Christmas with my husband's new Emirates job. We have 3 children and need to find a school for them. I've been given some advice but would love to hear from anyone who's already living in this area as to what are the nearest and best schools. I think we've narrowed it down to Wellington Academy GEMS (Silicon Oasis), Repton, Horizon and Safa Community School. Any thoughts? They will be entering Y2, EY2 (Sept 2015) and EY2 (2017). All help much appreciated as you can imagein picking a school from the UK is proving tricky! Thanks
