It will be interesting with Ramadan being in August this year. I feel sorry for people who have to work out in the heat. I got in a taxi at the airport just before 7pm a few days ago with a fasting driver. He got onto Emirates Rd and drove like the clappers. I told him that I was more than happy for him to stop and pray/break his fast, which he did. He drove a lot more sedately after that LOL! DEfinitely worth the extra time :)

Landline rings (very unusual in our house!) Shamat: hello Unidentified voice (UV): good afternoon ma'am shamat: (questioningly): hello???? UV: good afternoon ma'am SILENCE shamat: (irritated) who am I talking to? UV: I'm calling from Etisalat ma'am. shamat: yes? UV: ma'am, how much you pay for your internet from us? shamat: Err, if you are calling from Etisalat, how come you don't know????? UV: I just want to know if you are paying 149 or 159 for your service shamat: (Eyeroll) Anyway, to cut the explanation of a long, tedious phone call short, they were trying to upgrade us to a different package. Once again, I think they may have chosen the wrong person to do their telephoning for them! I did fear that if I hadn't broken the silence, I may still have been on the phone now, listening to a silent caller!

We order in once in a while from motorcity. We're in one of the lovely communities just off of 611 that no one ever hears of :) London Fish and Chips: Ordered from them one week... no problem. Next week: sorry ma'am its too far away. Or sorry ma'am we only have small bike. Yes I know... all delivery is on the same bike!! Wendy's: No ma'am we don't delivery there... too far. Me: But we say your delivery bike in the area yesterday. Wendy's: That was for Layan ma'am. Me: Yes I know. We're right beside and you have to drive by our community to get to Layan. Wendy's: No ma'am no deliver Me: Then why does Layan get delivery? Wendy's: Only certain people are allowed ma'am :\:

The other day I asked the waitress at Nando's if I could just get the burger, and not the meal (because the burger wasn't listed on their menu by itself). She got me just the chicken breast. No burger bread, no lettuce, no tomato, no mayo, basically... no burger! It took me 5 minute to explain that I wanted just the sandwich including all it's elements and not the fries and Coke. Grr Edited because I spell like a 4 year old edited by stovetop on 01/08/2011

Awww, poor guy. He was probably all nervous. :-D I've been in a taxi a few times when they've asked to stop for gs, water etc. No problem. They've always stopped their meter. I'd rather stop than run out of gas or have the poor driver dehydrate. It will be interesting with Ramadan being in August this year. I feel sorry for people who have to work out in the heat.

Heard wonderful things re the Brick Lane Indian (ie British authentic Indian based in Al Barsha) Phoned them first to check they deliver our way, "Oh yes sir we do" So we get off the phone to choose our menu via their very good and comprehensive web site......... call them back to order mega excited re the authentic British indian menu ..... to be told, "No sir, we don't deliver that way" ....arrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!!! Even offered them 20 to 30 dhs to deliver, sorry sir, will put our driver on the road for 30 mins (ie 15mins here then 15mins back)......."Sorry sir, no can do" :-( Needless to say, gutted, very hungry with no decent Indian delivery options, soup n toast it is then :-(

DH was in a sports shop today looking at long sleeved sports shirts for golf when a shop assistant came up and said to him that they were selling rain jackets for the same price. DH - "for playing golf? I don't think so." :)

We were eating at a [b'>completely empty[/b'> Indian restaurant in Motor City last night and the waitress seemed to be in a really narky mood. In walked two customers and they asked for a table for fourteen, adding that the rest of the family were following shortly. The waitress just looked at them and replied, wait for it..... 'sorry only tables for eight'!!!!! Another one, the owner of the gardening company I use called to my house with his 3 year old little girl. When they were leaving I walked them to his car, a nice Mercedes 4x4. I looked in and asked him where was the car seat for the little one. He replied 'no need madam and no room when mother, father and family in car'. I explained that if there is a crash then the little one would just fly through the window. He replied 'No, no madam my windows always closed!!!!!!

I needed to go to a company in Al Quoz industrial area and wasn't sure where they were located so I called the company and asked: "I need to come to your office - I know you're in Al Quoz but I'm not sure where." "Can you please tell me what's around you that I might recognize". Receptionist "Madam, around us is buildings"! She had no idea which buildings or any landmarks - just buildings!

Went to M&S at Dubai Mall last night. Bought a number of things so was weighed down by bags, and the security guard kindly brought me a trolley. Loaded bags into trolley and went to walk out of the store, when another security guard popped up. Guard: Madam! You cannot take trolley out of store! Me: But the other guard just gave it to me, as I bought a lot of things in your store?? Guard: No madam, trolley only for inside store. Me: What? So I can use it for 20 metres from the checkout to the exit, and then have to unload everything again?? Guard: Yes madam. Me: :\:

Kardelen, people may have more experience than I with this, but I would suggest you should be able to get a refund/exchange on the bed. There's the Consumer Rights thing, which I can't say I've ever investigated, and also I think you should be able to return goods within a week or a month of purchase if they're not what you wanted. I might be completely wrong, and I'm sure it will be a lot of hassle, but it's worth giving it a go, no? Otherwise, buy the correct size bed elsewhere and sell the wrong one on Dubizzle? The problem is I really like the bed ;) I have arranged it now so it fits into the bedroom although I have no easy access now to my side of the bed... Guess we will just exchange the mattress to make it fit the bed. I was just so ****** off with Home Center's reaction. All you ever get is a blank stare and you can tell you just asked for something which is not mentioned in their handbook. The problem here in Dubai is that most customer service staff are not trained to use their common sense (if they have one at all), they might as well be robots. :\: Very frustrating. But thanks for your suggestions :)

Its another shoe shop one - what is it with the shoe shops out here?! Shamat is after a pair of red shoes. She passes a shop window which has the perfect pair of red shoes so she pops in, but can't see them anywhere in the shop. shamat: I'm interested in the red shoes in the window, but i can't see them anywhere in the shop. Where are they? shop asst: last piece ma'am. shamat: (thinks, why leave them in the window then? but says-) What size are they? shop asst: size 40 ma'am shamat: Oh that's a shame, I wanted a 38. shop asst: I will check if I have any more. shamat: (thinks - but you just told me they were the last ones. But says-) OK then. shop asst: (taps away on the computer, looks up beaming) I have them in black, in a size 37. That ok ma'am?? shamat: (thinks, so you have them in the wrong size and in the wrong colour?!!! But says) Err, no, that's ok, I think I'll leave it thanks! edited by shamat on 06/07/2011

Trust me thats not bad at all What is bad when you make a followup call and another employee refuses to deal with you saying "We sent email to Sir, so he should call" Of course you explain it was their mistake to address you as Sir in the email, but to no avail OMG hahaha stupid... So now I have moved my house on the weekend I have more stories to tell about the famous Dubai customer service: 1) Jumbo Electronics: bought a TV and sound system, delivered yesterday, unfortunately only the TV and the delivery guy had no clue about a sound system. So I called customer service, answer "sorry ma'am I will check and call back after 5 minutes"... right, one hour later, still nothing, so I called again, this time a guy, answer "so sorry miss, I will call you after maximum 2 hours"... yup, 3 hours later, you guess, right, nothing... I called again, now nobody was answering anymore! So in the end I had to drive to Jumbo again and complain there until they delivered last night... "sorry ma'am, not our mistake, it's LG mistake" errrrr whatever 2) Home Center: went there a week ago to buy a bed, the Sales rep gave us the measurements, we calculated and bought the bed... yesterday it was delivered and guess what? The bed is 20 cm longer than we were told, therefore taking too much space of the room and the normal 180x200 mattress we have does not fit because it's too short! So went there as well but of course I cannot prove what I was told and so I have to live with it... 3) @Home: bought 3 packs of duvet covers including 2 pillow cases. Opened it yesterday to make the bed and surprise - no pillow cases inside! Uuuuuuuurgh

Haha classic! I also love it when you speak to them on the phone and then they send you an email saying "Dear Sir" Didn't know my voice sounded like a man... :\: Trust me thats not bad at all What is bad when you make a followup call and another employee refuses to deal with you saying "We sent email to Sir, so he should call" Of course you explain it was their mistake to address you as Sir in the email, but to no avail

At London Fish and Chips, Ibn Battuta the other day. Me (quite clearly, reading from the menu and pointing at item): Hi, could I have the chicken nuggets with chips from the kids' menu, please? Assistant: Fish nuggets? Me: No, chicken nuggets, please. Assistant: Sorry, we don't have. Fish nuggets? OK, whatever.

Driving around Sharjah trying to find the Blue Souk, we stop by 2 massive rectangular buildings by the corniche. I get out of the car and talk to the security guard: Me: Is this the blue souk? SG: I don't know M'am. Me: ok is this the Market Souk? (as it is otherwise known as) SG: I don't know M'am. Me: you work here right? SG: yes M'am. Me: ok so how is this place called?
