Yes Edna. that looks like it, I wasnt thinking of trying to convince them it was the same fish I just thought replacing it like for like was the right thing to do (I can't imagine there was a huge emotional bond between the beast and its owners). .... Lol. Without meaning to put more pressure on you, don't assume they didn't care about the wee scaly beast. Not sure if anyone remembers my desperate attempts to save our ailing goldfish. Freshly made green pea jelly anyone? :D

We were at the Lulu Hypermarket in Al Barsha yesterday and at the downstairs level they have a pet store selling fish and birds of all sorts...would be worth a look.

Don't know if anyone remembers a poster leaving to go back to the US about 2 years ago. She came on here asking if anyone would take her fish because she didn't have the heart to flush him (!) I said that if he was a small, cold water fish that I could add to the tank with DD's goldfish then I'd take him. She said he was so I arranged to meet her and collect the fish. She handed me a leaking Ziploc bag with this huge cichlid in about 2" of water and her parting shot was "It killed all the other fish in my tank." It's still going strong despite the filter breaking down for a few days, jumping out of the tank a few times (now covered), the water turning brown due to too much holiday feeder, temperature changes, being transported around the UAE in a screw top jar.....

This thread made me smile; I really do understand the stress you are under. 25 years ago and very newly arrived in Abu Dhabi I was press-ganged into looking after my husband's bosses pets whilst they went on vacation for a month. I protested very hard that I had no experience with animals, having never had any kind of pet, plus I had no car and would have to walk or taxi the 10 minutes to get to their place a couple of times a day. My reservations were ignored and I duly fed, watered and cleaned out one hampster, two terrapins and budgie twice a day. The owners arrived back after 4 1/2 weeks and we had to pick them up at the airport, where the wife handed me a bunch of orchids from Singapore as thank for looking after the animals. At this point, I had to explain that I was right about not being the correct person to do the job; every single one of them had eventually succumbed to my ministrations and died. I was never again asked to look after anything living again, not even a plant. Job done!

Pets Plus on SZR past the Safa Park exit in the new Al Safa Building is the best LFS I have been to in Dubai. I second this, it's a great new pet shop with very knowledgeable staff. Good varied stock of interesting fresh water and marine fish, not expensive either.

BTW - Dragon Mart have about 7/8 little shops selling fish. IB section has 3/4 and also a couple as you walk down in section FA and GA. Hope this helps.

Not funny - The same thing has happened to us, we have 4 dead fish, little white things, all were being fed and looked after. However as there is no a/c in the house for nearly 2 weeks, my DD was really worried as she couldn't see any of them swimming, all lying over at the top of the tank :( when she went over to feed them. The plan is to confess, but we have replaced the fishes aswell just today. Only to find when we got back home with 4 new fishes, that there was a 5th fish found when cleaning out the tank for the new fishes. Ooops!

I am assuming the fish was brought to your home......the move alone, vibration, temperature change could have been enough to trigger it's status to an ex goldfish..........they really are very sensitive creatures. Even the slightest change in the water's ph can be fatal. Just fess up.........and don't do what a friend once did....seeing her daughter's hamster dead in its cage, she raced around all the pet stores in town to replace it with a look alike...........when her DD arrived home to tell her that she had found Cheeky dead in his cage that morning before school...........she wimped out and pleaded a miracle. But kudos to your DH......I once was spotted by a friend driving somewhat erratically........giving the kiss of life to a moribund guinea *** as I raced to the vets....... edited by Livelytrish on 13/08/2011

I have just been out and bought them some Quality Street chocolates by way of compensation for their loss, I know what I would rather have!! If you're right Asti and fish do suffer stress then that could explain the untimely death as we have a 10 month old with a very high pitched squeal she has learned from Nursery, I'll put that forward as an explanation on their return from the UK. Thanks for your advice

Lots of fish at Dragonmart. I wouldnt bother buying a new one. Goldfish die easily and are easily stressed out.

What we did wrong I don't know Unless you overfed it, probably nothing. Could have been any number of reasons why it died. My Husband tried resusitating the ugly slimey thing to no avail I've got a mental picture of a guy giving mouth-to-mouth to a goldfish ;) this is a funny looking fish, its a black goldfish with bulbous eye sockets and a fan tail Possibly a [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Moor'>Black Moor[/url'>? If so they're very common aquarium fish. Like other people have said, don't try and pass off a new one as the original. Just be honest. As long as you didn't overfeed it, it wasn't your fault. These things happen.

Perfect end to the perfect week. The fish we were babysitting for my Husbands boss has kicked the bucket. What we did wrong I don't know, went into the kitchen yesterday afternoon and there was no sign of life. My Husband tried resusitating the ugly slimey thing to no avail. My question is, is there any pet shops in any of the Malls, this is a funny looking fish, its a black goldfish with bulbous eye sockets and a fan tail probably about 3 inch long. I have never seen a fish like it but maybe thats how they all are over here? Any tips on where to get a replacement would be appreciated (hopefully his Girlfriend doesnt read this site) Touched by your compassion..... Lol !

If you replace it you should tell them their fish died. They will know and it'll just make you look like liars.

The garden centre on SZR has fish, not sure if they have that particular sort but could probably help with the voucher suggestion.

I wouldn't-they will know it is a different fish-and you might kill it again anyway if you aren't looking after it correctly. Maybe buy a voucher from a pet shop and leave it to them to select a new fish-you never know they might be secretly relieved it has died and they don't need to worry about organising someone to mind it when they go away
