Trade licence

Basic question, I am a very part time life coach, do i need a trade licence or not? Half of my coaching work is done pro bono, but I also have a few paying clients. I am not looking to expand my "business" as i have 2 small children. I have looked into trade licenses but the costs are so high that there would be no point on me to continue... I have also been advised to just operate in the grey zone, but honestly that does not really sit well with me... Any feedback / help greatly appreciated.

You could take a look at this company - they sign a contract with you for you to work under their trade license. they do packages with or without visas. http://www.keybusiness.ae/ Don't touch this company with a barge pole. We've used this company since 2005 as agents for several different businesses. Our clients use them too and have never had a problem. When we did change for one of the businesses (as we thought we got a better deal) we had huge problems with the new company (including forging of ducuments by company, always adding extra charges for no reason) and had to go back to Key Business Group. edited by starsouthern on 12/02/2013 Then I recommend you contact the DED and ask them what activities this company is actually licensed for. As I know it, they have had many activities withdrawn and they are not licensed to do all that their website advertises. I'm currently using key business group and its up for renewal can you elaborate at all? TBH we have been happy with them but if there is a problem I may have to look elsewhere I strongly advise you to double check with DED as I was informed that they have been breaching laws and have had their activities curtailed somewhat.

Cheers, thank you. Can I ask where you found this out? (I am guessing from experience) just at the moment I am planning something to do when I eventually go back home, so would mainly be selling in UK and Oz. For Oz 'home type' biz I am told I don't need an actual trade license if it's a hobby business but need to report any earnings over a certain amount to the ATO... sounds right but will check again with the small business place I use...

When you say working overseas, does that mean if you had an online business, which ONLY sold/shipped outside of the UAE, that it would be doable on that license? Or do you not need a license if say, you were running a business in your home country, where the online component was registered in that country, and all stock was produced and sold o/s? Been trying to find info about this and it seems difficult to get a clear answer. Basically, I would be desigining a product but it would be made and sold by someone else outside of the UAE, in their country under their trading rules. Do I need a license even for that?? No you wouldn't need a license from here for this but may do from the country your product/design is being used.

Why don't you guys try to get a freelancer visa instead of getting an actual trade license to set up a company?

Thanks for the heads up ladies. Thinking I may go the route of getting a studio with a local partner. Being nosy, but are you doing some sort of fitness thing? That's a fair question :) yes indeed. Nutritional counseling will be my focus (surprise) but, Body sculpting through weight training and boot camps will be my fitness offerings. The latter probably won't see much business in July and August even if I offered a midnight class lol That's great Beebers, you'll do well! You have 1 customer here already, seriously! Please keep me/us posted!

You need to bear in mind that a virtuzone visa still doesn't allow you to work from home...... I understand that only Emirati ladies are legally allowed to work from home Trade licenses for Emiratis to work from home are not a free for all either, they have restricted this category. Freezone, Virtuzone, CreativeZone , RAK zone, Fujeirah ZOne....etc etc....are all to do with working within that zone or overseas, but not in the local market, so do not be sucked in to paying all of those costs and then still be fined.

Thanks so much for you replies! I totally agree grey zone to me equals red zone .... So I am really not happy on continuing like this and have there for also just worked for free . Beebers will also look into info you sent through, I have looked at all the free zone companies and RAK companies but it would still mean paying aed18000 - 25000. And I don't even make that in a year .... Yeah, no kidding! That is my conundrum and why I haven't bothered to practice here. Also I need some new certs, and the cost of those plus the proper licensing means I'm looking at more of a 3 year plan for real revenue rather than a 1 year. I've mentioned before on this program I don't practice in Dubai because its not lucrative enough, but truthfully it is difficult to even be profitable for a while, especially with a blank slate as far as clientele, advertising costs....sheesh. If I come across anything I will post back here. I don't know about you, but I prefer to be self employed in this field, as I don't desire to varnish my opinions or mold to a certain mantra that isn't congruent with my core values.

What do you mean by 'grey zone'? That you continue doing your work without a licence, and still get a few paying clients? -That in fact is illegal. -You may continue working like that in the 'grey zone', but very quickly can turn into 'red zone', if caught by the right guy, on the wrong day. i highly reccomend being above board in all things you do, even if it means you partner up, or work for someone else (under their licence).

Yes you do. Right, of course. I just wonder which one is specific for this field

Hi pseif, no answers but funny I was just going to start a similar thread. Trying to figure out, aside from the grey zone you mentioned, which I'm not down for either, how personal trainers, life coaches, et all in health and wellness operate. The individual trainers I know don't go about it the way I want to. A friend of mine in a different sector mentioned virtuzone so I'm looking into that today. Would love to hear feedback from someone doing one of those things legally! X
